Alternatively you can wait around/search for some special deals. $40 for a round here is a bargain for sure. Note: Most golf courses operate from first light until last. This changes depending on the time of year of course, but generally the opening hours are around 7am - 5pm.

The weekends however were a tad busier, as are most golf courses, although the waiting times became quite a nuisance so I made it a priority to play during the week. The course provides great variation, with holes long and short in the front 9, testing all aspects of your game, with the back 9 featuring long straight holes with trickier greens, particularly their positioning. The drainage problems experienced during winter have been fixed and Akarana is a great course for all levels, providing a nice challenge especially for beginners.

On most days it is quite expensive to play here, but on a Monday and Tuesday it is an incredible bargain at almost half the price; too good to pass up really. Another advantage of playing this course is its central location, not too far from most places around the city.

I had previously visited Onewhero Golf Club in the middle of last year and was a great course, especially with its greenery in a particularly rural setting. Google Maps had set us off course, landing us in Pukekohe and the club's old address decades ago. We managed to find our way there via the back streets of rural South Auckland. During the weekend's round the course had visibly taken a hammering. The fairways were burnt off, making for a very advantageous roll on if the tee off was accurately hit - it was like playing on hard dirt. The greens were in great nick though, however were deceptively slow after adjusting to the dryness of the rest of the course. It is relatively cheap for a round ($25 for affiliate for 18 holes) and I would suggest a cart next time, especially after walking 18 holes in the heat of the day. The bar was ideal for afterwards, with pints a cheap $5, with all the country favourites on tap - as well as a pool table, only accepting old 50c coins.

A good, short course for beginners with few trees lining the fairways. This is good for all those drives that go astray as there is usually a good opportunity for you to hit your next shot from a different fairway and still end up in a decent position (Heck my brother hit across two other fairways and still ended up on the green!). Most of the course is maintained alright, but the greens are often quite bumpy, which can get a little annoying. The course is quite cheap though, and can get pretty busy at times. Check out the twilight specials that they have during daylight savings time for an even better deal. Unlike many of the more snobby Golf Clubs, Chamberlain is pretty casual when it comes to having the proper gear and attire. Tip: This place is one of the cheapest around if you want to sign up for a years affiliation.

My first eagle at Takapuna, my best score at Huapai, an impressive 73. But the first time I cracked the magical 80 mark was at Chamberlain Park, a superb 77, with two birdies on the scorecard. The course offers a few real challenges, hole one can be driven, but it is risk versus reward... Too far right and you're stuffed, too far left, likewise. Then you should cash in on a series of easy wide and short par fours, a beginner level par three, only to be followed by series of tricky holes that can trip you up. Once you've cleared the front nine, you are allowed another scoring opportunity, as the second nine presents five easy holes in a row, you need to score, because all your hard work can be for nothing if you trip up on the hard fifteenth and sixteenth. Survive those two, and you've entered a presentable scorecard. The course is home to a basic pro shop, a basic restaurant and adequate restrooms. There is plenty of parking and easy access form the motorway. Chamberlain Park is short in length, making it a perfect place to hone your golfing skills.

I've played the different layouts of this unique set up, and I'm always impressed with the toughness of this course. It is not a course for beginners, and the whole club experience at the North Shore Golf Club calls out for seasoned club members. The clubhouse is excellent and the staff knowledgeable, and you get to play on good greens, well kept fairways and bunkers that actually still have sand in them. There is a dress code going, and this shouldn't be a problem for the level of golf that is expected on this course. I like this course, but my budget doesn't currently allow me to sign up as a member, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to be one.

One of the more exclusive courses in Auckland, Remuera Golf Club is a great course and very…read moreenjoyable - if you play straight. We played one Friday afternoon and managed to negotiate a deal with the staff member for 9 holes for $30 (a bargain considering the usual price of the course - usually $120 for a full round for a non-affiliate. This was well worth it, with the course being immaculate - the greens slightly fast, and testing, but the whole experience made us willing to return and pay full price next time. My brother was previously a junior member at the club and there were great coaching programmes in place with tuition and junior member fees drastically cheaper and a superb way to become involved in the club, if any 10 year olds are reading this. The club is quite a tight-knit community with a solid social scene. The twilight golf competition and comes highly recommended, a great way to unwind (or get wound up) after work, depending on how you want to play it.

First, Titirangi Golf Club would really rather you play somewhere else. This is evidenced by the 225 dollar green fee they demand. Gulf Harbour, Remeuera Golf Club, Muriwai Golf Club and Windross Farms are far better courses and are half the price. Only one explanation: Titirangi doesn't want or need you but If you have 225 dollars to throw away, they will take it. The course is not that bad but neither is it note worthy. Remuera and Windross Farms are design masterpieces not far from Auckland City. If you want to venture out some forty five minutes away, Muriwai Golf Club on the west coast and Gulf Harbour on the east coast demonstrate New Zealand's nautical appeal. Both tracks are exceptional layouts with majestic views of the Tasman and Hauraki Gulf respectively. Go play!

The range is fully floodlit to enable practice long after the light has faded. The driving range is very well priced - at the moment the night-time special is $10 for 100 balls - and the automatic tee's are a bonus. But I would recommend bringing your own clubs, the clubs that are available for hire aren't very good. There is a shop on-site that will cater for all of your golfing needs. And lastly - good access off the motorway and great parking!

The course plays best in springtime when the grass is green and the hundreds of trees in full bloom. In winter times it can get a bit soggy underfoot, and in summer months it could be a bit dry. Great if you're a long hitter. What I like about this course, is that on the first you can really let loose on a wide fairway, and they seem to get narrower as the course continues. There is an eagle chance or two on two short-ish par fives and there are a couple of holes where you can make your move on the score card.

It should however be enjoyable for intermediate golfers too. There should be adequate training areas, including a practice green that is similar in speed to the greens on the course, and a place where you can practice your 30m chip. Then there should be a well stocked pro shop, clean locker rooms and a place to buy snacks and drinks. Huapai offers all of these, and so much more. It is a complete club. However, the biggest selling point for me is a great 19th hole. And at Huapai the 19th is by far the club's biggest selling point. And guests are more than welcome, making it the ideal place to clinch that business deal.
