I first joined this club as a student for a year for a fantastic discounted deal…read more This was ideal during the week when I did not have classes at University and could make it to the course with friends. The weekends however were a tad busier, as are most golf courses, although the waiting times became quite a nuisance so I made it a priority to play during the week. The course provides great variation, with holes long and short in the front 9, testing all aspects of your game, with the back 9 featuring long straight holes with trickier greens, particularly their positioning. The drainage problems experienced during winter have been fixed and Akarana is a great course for all levels, providing a nice challenge especially for beginners.

Anyway, enough about me and my strange grass fetish, let's move on to more about golf. This course is both beautiful and challenging. Those hard greens can be a curse sometimes as the ball just wants to keep on rolling, especially on the downhill slopes. On most days it is quite expensive to play here, but on a Monday and Tuesday it is an incredible bargain at almost half the price; too good to pass up really. Another advantage of playing this course is its central location, not too far from most places around the city.

The main reason why this course is so good is because of its location. It's pretty easy to find out…read morein West Auckland and not very far at all from the city centre. And even though it's situated in a prime location, it is still reasonably cheap; $30 will get you a full round of golf here on most days. That is good stuff for a pretty decent course. It's not too hard nor is it too long, it's just right. There's nothing especially different about this course that makes it stand out from the rest, but I suppose you need to sacrifice some beautiful scenery for a convenient central city location. Note: Most golf courses operate from first light until last. This changes depending on the time of year of course, but generally the opening hours are around 7am - 5pm.

Maungakiekie is affordable, charging $20 for 9 holes on week days and $30 for 9 holes on weekends. The club staff and members are relatively friendly and welcoming. However, there are several problems with the course which has somewhat ruined my experience playing here. Me and my family have played at this course at least five to six times now after deciding to look for a course which was closer to our home and more affordable than some of the other courses we have played. Every time I have played a round here, the course has been extremely muddy and the fairways are inadequacy maintained with knee high grass evident in some places only approximatley five feet from the side of the fairway. Unfortunately, due to the constant dampness of the course and the constant protruding mud, you are guaranteed to loose dozens of balls here even if you play a good straight shot! Due to the course conditions and the obvious problems they have with drainage, there is considerable surface water evident on just about every hole. For Maungakiekie to become a better and more popular course, urgent course maintenance is required if they want to renew memberships and attract new players.

Parking is easy as there is lots of free parking on site and navigating the grounds is also a cinch because of the walking track. I have never let my dog off the leash here it just doesn't feel right for some reason? I am unsure what the official rules are regarding dogs but it's better to be safe. The TSB Wallace Arts Centre also makes this place extra special standing majestically in the middle of the grounds. I like to pretend that it is my house and I'm simply taking a walk around my endless garden. If you are fitness focused, this place really can deliver as a walking or running destination as it is quite a large circuit with lots of inclines and declines! The park spreads out from this high point , curving away down to the road on one side, the school on the other, and looking out over the Manukau Harbor on the far right. The park has the biggest collection of Northern Hemisphere trees in New Zealand - and they are certainly big themselves. When I play disc golf here, I usually have to dedicate at least half an hour to climbing trees to retrieve discs- provided, of course, they aren't at the very top of an old oak tree. There is a course available at : http://www.discgolf.co.nz/monteCourseDescription.htm, but the map can be a bit confusing - so it's worth contacting the contact available on that page to get shown around. Afterwards you can stop off for a coffee in the cafe, or head to Cameron Pools for a nice dip.

The super discounted bargain bins near the entrance of the store are usually pretty sweet if you can find something. This place exists for all your golfing needs. When my sister and I arrived at Enchanted Forest Mini Golf a few weekends ago, we were wowed! From…read morethe range of holes and facilities, to the friendly owner who was very helpful and chatted to all of his customers. This was really great considering I haven't received this kind of service at other mini golf places around Auckland. We really enjoyed the variety of holes. Sounds weird I know but Enchanted Forest Mini Golf seriously has two of the coolest holes we have ever seen! The first one you have to hit your golf ball through chains - it sounds harder than you think! The second hole was unique for sure. The hole is completely surrounded by netting. The aim is to hit your ball as hard as you can (it sits on a raised platform), and if possible, hit the bullseye up top, ultimately to get a 'hole in one'. Again, it is harder than you think, but it is loads of fun! Plus, all the kids around us really enjoyed it! Another highlight is that the space around the mini golf course is very large! There is a shop where you purchase your tickets and other things like cold drinks and ice creams. There are also plenty of tables and chairs, plus you can use their BBQ's located onsite (free to use if you play one round of mini golf). This would be perfect for a birthday party or family gathering. An added bonus is that there is a Countdown right next door - easy to stock up on food beforehand! I guess the only negative would be that it is a little rough around the edges but it definitely feels like you're in a forest (or bush!). Interesting fact - the space used to be a park, and instead of removing everything, they have kept all the original trees and plants which is nice to see - we even saw a Kauri tree! Overall, Enchanted Forest Mini Golf is the best I have tried in Auckland so far. The added bonuses (unique 'net' hole, BBQ's, supermarket next door and location) really make this mini golf worth going to, not just to play a few games, but also to get a group of family and friends along and have a BBQ lunch or dinner afterwards!

With 18 international length holes and a course designed and built by a golfer - for golfers, we provide a genuine challenge and fun for all ages. With a selection of piped music around the grounds, native birdsong and park atmosphere the Enchanted Forest is relaxing and fun for the grown-ups too, with charm, character and a beautiful setting. If you think you know this course, then think again! We have some exciting changes underway, with a huge tidy up and re-planting programme, the roll out of a course make-over and a coffee bar on the way.
