We were on the hunt for another Christmas Market, this one nestled in the shadow of Sendlinger Tor,…read moreone of the city's remaining City Gates. We started the morning at Marienplatz, then walked from there to the Tor, not really knowing what to expect. It was Christmas Eve, and the last day of this particular market. It was also a bit early in the morning, so most of the stalls were still closed up tight when we arrived. We did walk around the open area (or rather, the place the housed the market stalls) a bit, then took a bit of a stroll around the neighborhood closest to Sendlinger Tor, but there wasn't really much to see or experience. It was a quick visit, and I felt a bit sad about walking away before the stalls opened, but we had several hours before things officially opened, and there wasn't much to do. We did end up (accidentally) going back later that same day, as we'd just kept walking from Marienplatz and ended back up at the gate (without really realizing it at first; we'd gone by a different route, and didn't make the connection that this was the same market until we were in the middle of it). I'm glad we went, but I think our timing was just off. I'd like to think it was way more lively every other day before this, the last day they were open.

I visited Munich near the end of October, knowing that most of the Oktoberfests were over by then…read more I was also looking for a thrift store. A local told me about this place, which from US standards, seemed to be a flea market of sorts. Lots of antique dealers and vendors. It appears to be in the parking lot of the attached church. There were plenty of food vendors and there was a bier garden around the corner that if I had known it was there sooner, I would have been drinking some of the local brews. I was looking for some authentic German gear and found some old steins that I was able to send back to the states. Otherwise, it was exactly like a flea market with vendors selling you the latest food chopper.

The pool itself is very nice but not exactly what I was expecting. They have only three lanes marked for "sports swimmers", ie people who want to swim laps. Actually three lanes is supposedly a lot for Germany although it's pretty surprising to an American swimmer. Thus, it gets a bit crowded in the lanes during the summer, around noon and after work. Early mornings and 1pm are good times to go to get the pool more to yourself. They also do not have flags for backstrokers and their lane lines aren't colored so as to indicate where the wall is. They also have a sauna and a great diving pool, although I haven't tried either. The hours are very generous, to accommodate any schedule and they have a swim shop in the building in case you forget anything.
