It was convenient to charge everything to the room and the menu variety and fresh ingredients could have one eat every meal onsite. Check in with Diego was a breeze. Although they did not offer us an upgrade, which could have been possible through our credit card partnership, he did let us pick a room from what was available. We picked 5044. The view was good, not a full ocean view but we did have a partial ocean view. The hotel and room were very clean. The staff was very attentive and anticipated our needs. Unfortunately, for the past two years, our experiences have declined significantly. The hotel no longer maintains the level of service and standards we once loved. The atmosphere feels different, the staff are not as welcoming, and there is a noticeable lack of attentiveness and care. During this stay, we had a particularly unpleasant two-day experience at the beach regarding the setup of lounge chairs and umbrellas. Rather than going into every detail, I will simply say the situation was handled poorly and left us very disappointed. What was most upsetting was that no meaningful effort was made to resolve the issue or make up for the inconvenience. Even after speaking with Guest Relations, who mentioned contacting the General Manager, nothing improved the following day. No accommodation or gesture was offered, which was surprising given the hotel's luxury positioning. It is also noticeable that the property feels quite empty during weekdays, except on special occasions or long weekends. Even then, the warmth and hospitality we once associated with this hotel seem to be missing. That said, I want to sincerely recognize Valenzo, who served us daily. He was professional, kind, and incredibly attentive. We never had to ask for anything, he would notice small details, like refilling ice before we even realized it was melting. His service was outstanding and he truly tried to make our stay better. Thank you, Valenzo. You made a difference. It is genuinely sad to see a place that once meant so much to us lose its standard. We hope management takes guest feedback seriously and invests in retraining staff to restore the level of service this property was once known for.

Adults only, couples only, all-inclusive resort - that's a big yes! We hadn't been to a resort in a long time and were very stoked for our visit in August 2025. As is the standard for the Excellence brand of resorts - the staff greeted us warmly and professionally. Instantly, our needs were taken care of - the room wasn't ready, but we were provided with an opportunity to change and immediately take advantage of our stay. The size of the resort initially threw us off - it is much smaller than your typical resort, but it also caters to a smaller crowd for (their words) "a boutique experience." It seemed dead until we got close to the beach area and the swim-up bar. This is where the people hang out. Dinner at El Mar our first night was amazing - excellent seafood (check out the pics) and service. We ate twice each at Lupita Steakhouse and La Isla. Unfortunately, the hotel kept changing the schedule of which restaurant would be open what night. This threw off our dinner plans more than once, and we spent more time at La Isla (with the least exciting menu) getting eaten by mosquitoes than we cared for. During our stay, the beach snacks menu also changed. It went from a delicious two-page menu to a sad one-pager; gross nachos and hot dogs, anyone? Online, people went on full-on rants about this. It turns out the menus across all the Excellence resorts are being stream-lined to the new executive chef's "vision." Some people, from what I read online, are now considering cancelling their reservations, not wanting to fly all the way here for waffles and burgers. On top of the rebranding, the hotel is also undergoing renovations to bring it up to modern times. We thought our room was beautiful, but it was a tad outdated. For customer service, though - the Excellence brand will not settle for less than, well, excellence. All of our interactions with staff at all levels was top-notch. Because of the vibe here - we didn't talk to anyone but hotel staff for four whole days. Staff shout-outs: Denise, Luis, Fernando and Fabiola at the beach; Octavio and Bernice at the spa; Andrea, Aina, and Alexander at guest services; Pasquale, Alex, and Elvis at pool side; Cirilo and Vanya at El Mar, Brenda at La Isla, and Alberto and Barbra at Lupita. You wouldn't think it is a resort looking at it from the outside. Okay well I was still wing a little optimistic about the place. We arrived and it is is all open. Nothing glamorous about the entrance. There is one check in desk with one person. The wait was long to get checked in and to our room. It is old you can tell but for me that's not too important as long as the customer service is on point. We got shown to our room and the room was so refreshing it was cold and clean. The mini bar was all inclusive big plus. We got the room facing the pool. Very nice view the pool is pretty big. Not so new but still nice. Food: It usually is buffet style but that was closed and that sucked!!!! You had to order off a menu and the staff wasn't quite on point with the service only but a few were. In the morning they come to you with a cart full of fruit yogurt oats granola and pan dulce sweet bread. However they don't announce what else they have on the cart. We missed out on homemade juices. Pretty upset by that. We only knew because we saw someone drinking a green cleanse drink and so we asked. The food from the ceviche hut was good it's not heavy just right. But our server had the worst service. Was a little on the flustered side maybe overworked but he also was knowledgeable on the areas around the hotel which he should be. Staff: There a few good nice ones and the other few just plain rude. The hotel lacked a lot of supplies and food. No ingredients for mojitos, no straws, no plastic cups, or other things that a hotel should carry. They close all the bars and restaurants at 7! Really what is that. However the room service staff was great they went above and beyond. We complained and the only thing to make us feel better they put flowers on the floors maybe on our anniversary or honeymoon. But that was not good enough. I would not return to this place again nor will I recommend it to friends. This is more for older couples who want no noise or a party seen. You can see pink flamingos, whale sharks, brown pelicans and frigate birds and it's not overrun by tourists. I'd hate to see that change, but thanks to the NYT, it probably will. CasaSandra is a special place put together with a gypsy sensibility, full of little artful details that make a stay unique. Its a rustic place, not an all inclusive resort, so prepare for that, but staying here is a special experience. We would love to return. We arrived at night, and as we drove up in our golf cart taxi (the only transport allowed on the island) this small hotel was lit up with gorgeous string lights, live music and a Cuban dinner (the owner Sandra hails from Cuba.) At night, this place glows. The island is reachable only by local ferry, and will require some planes, trains and automobiles to get here, but the hotel will arrange transport, for a price, if you want that. The rooms are simple, have no televisions and the wifi is a joke existing (barely) only in the beautiful main lobby. Prepare to unplug, or to be frustrated trying to connect. The rooms at CasaSandra are rustic and artful and feature local textiles, colorful tiled sinks, mosquito netting over the bed, thoughtful local snacks, and a personal, in-room Nespresso machine. The lobby and restaurant area, and the outdoor pool and especially the beach with palm frond topped cabanas are beautiful. There is a good masseuse on staff, to kick off your relax-ment! We had an excellent service experience in the restaurant and hotel and would come back and stay again. Its a small lovely spot and people knew our names and family after several days. The only hiccups were with communication at the start of the visit, and a forgotten booking for a fishing trip, that was remedied the following day. Also, the small hotel next door is in the middle of construction, which normally you'd like to be told of ahead of time. The meals were enjoyable and beautifully presented, but could be pricey compared with other food on Holbox. We have been to the Yucatan five times and CasaSandra is a special place in the world. Simple, artful, and thoughtful.

So....on out last night we dropped in for dinner and drinks to cap off a perfect vacation. As always one to avoid crowds we walked in without reservations and were surprised to see just one table inside taken. There's an option of indoor or out and since I had enough bug bites for one week and tired of having to spray my self down every hour we chose to sit inside. Don't let this change your mind to sit outside, the hotel is right on the water and I'm guessing the sunset over dinner can be very romantic. After a short wait our drinks arrived and my girl and I settled on the specials. For her the sword fish and for yours truly the Filet Mignon. The ambience of the restaurant was definitely calm and relaxed, especially since your sitting to the right of the main entrance of the hotel. I think we might have seen 4-5 people walk in and out the entire time we were there. Also I think the hotel guests can see we were having a date night. After a few sips of a Mezcal Tonic and my yummy beer our food arrived. Her sword fish was absolutely amazing with this very flavorful sauce drizzled on and around with small mounds of onions as a compliment. My steak was cooked perfectly. So well that I was reluctant to share.....but of course when your in love...Tiny potatoes and sliced onions were really a nice touch to accompany my Filet Mignon. So all told with a tip (20%) $98. We were warned before we went that this was on the higher side of dining when it comes to price, but we still wanted to try it. Thank you to the cooks and our waiter for an excellent meal on our last night on the island. We look forward to seeing you all hopefully very soon!

To be honest, we can't imagine spending New Year's Eve anywhere else. Both times have been absolutely fantastic; the team didn't skip a beat. The resort is stunning and impeccably maintained, but what truly makes this place a gem is its incredible team and vibrant atmosphere. Entertainment The entertainment is top-notch, with a variety of high-energy performances each night. We were absolutely blown away by the Freddie Mercury tribute act. The resemblance was uncanny, and his energy was simply amazing--he had the whole place rocking! It's shows like that that make the evenings so memorable. The Heart of the Resort: The Staff As wonderful as the resort itself is, the staff are the real reason we started planning our next trip back before we even left. They made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived and are the key to the entire experience. We spent most of our days at the Excellence Club pool, and our waiter, Floricel, was a true standout. He was wildly attentive and responsive, ensuring our glasses were never empty. He didn't just take orders; he helped us discover the most incredible new drinks and his fun, engaging personality truly made our days by the pool so much more enjoyable. Our concierges, Edgar and David, were unbelievably helpful. From the moment we arrived, they helped us navigate our time at the resort, making reservations and ensuring every detail was handled. Having a dedicated concierge team like them is so important; they remove all the stress of planning and make you feel completely prioritized and cared for throughout your entire stay. We truly felt like their only guests. We also have to give a shout-out to Cesar at the lobby bar. We were so impressed that he recognized us from our previous trip, and of course, we remembered him! He is exceptionally attentive, and man, that guy is fast. He's a true professional. Last but certainly not least, a special mention goes to the man running the pizza oven at the main pool. He deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for his craft. He was just killing it all day, every day, serving up perfect pizzas with a smile. It's this level of service and genuine warmth from the staff that makes Excellence Playa Mujeres feel like a home away from home. We came back home so refreshed and can't wait to return.

Excellence Club: The upgrade gives you perks that, in my opinion, are worth the splurge. You get a private beach area, a private pool, exclusive access to the Magna restaurant, and a lounge bar. In your room, they add fresh flowers, sparkling wine, and an upgraded mini bar. You also get a different room service menu and a hydrotherapy session per person. Staff: Absolutely every staff member gave us phenomenal service. Many returning guests said the staff is why they came back. Some other resorts are more technologically advanced, but Excellence is top tier for its service. Someone is always checking in, and anything you need is taken care of right away. Pools/Beach: There are several pools, including a main pool with a swim-up bar. I called this the party area because it has music and afternoon activities/games. My favorite spot to lounge was near the "lazy river" across from the ping pong and billiards. This area is quieter, and they also have some day beds available. People get up EARLY to save the day beds and the lounge chairs. One morning, I headed down just before 8 AM, and there were only two day beds left. People leave towels, bags, or books to save space. The resort does not allow this, but it's difficult to enforce because you can't tell if someone is away swimming or grabbing a snack somewhere. Be a nice human, and don't save a space for three hours while you're up in your room sleeping. The beach also has a lot of lounge chairs and day beds. I've visited the beach in the morning and in the afternoon around 1 PM and was able to snag a lounge chair. Both pool and beach areas are very well attended! There is someone going around every 10 - 20 minutes checking in on you to see if you need water, drinks, or food. Restaurants/Food: It is impossible to absolutely kill all food categories at a resort. I'm going to be honest, the American food was not it. I wasn't a fan of cheeseburgers, wings, or pizza. However, there were some restaurants and food items that stood out to me. For breakfast, you can't go wrong with the Kitchen Table. It's a brunch buffet, and my go-to was the made-to-order omelets, chilaquiles, and French toast. The freshly squeezed orange juice was amazing, AND be sure to order a cappuccino instead of their regular coffee. For lunch, I highly recommend the fish tacos at Lobster House or the agua chiles and the crunchy salmon tacos from Olas. You get a great view of the beach while you eat, and it's a great vibe. One of our favorite dinners was the interactive dining at Spice. This does require a reservation, and I recommend making this reservation when you check in. It's a teppanyaki-style dinner, and you're in a separate room with 10 people total. It's very intimate, and all the courses were delicious. Our favorite post-dinner hangout was at the Sports Bar. They have a small pool table and will likely have a game that you're looking to catch while you enjoy a beer or cocktail. Aroma was our go-to for our morning coffee and our nightly ice cream scoop before heading to our room. Their iced hazelnut coffee was excellent, and I loved their lemon sorbet. You also cannot go wrong with the 24/7 room service. Experiences/Show: Download the Excellence Collection app. You'll use it every day for entertainment schedules and restaurant menus and dress codes. There are daily fitness offerings like yoga, pickleball, volleyball, or Zumba and activities like Sip Wine & Paint and Cantarito painting on the beach. Some events have limited spots, so arrive early. Every Thursday is the Mexican Fiesta with mariachi and a huge buffet (and a ton of margaritas), so it's a great time. Shows we loved were the Burlesque, Elegance Circo, and the Magic Show. Seasons Transfer: If you stay 7 days, you get a free airport pick-up and drop-off. Seasons provided great instructions, and finding our driver was easy. The vehicle was comfortable with room for six. Our return trip felt hectic because of an accident that caused major traffic. We still made the flight, but I recommend requesting an earlier pick-up time just in case. Junior Suite: I still think about this bed. I took a picture of the mattress brand because I want one at home. The pillows were perfect, and they gave us four. The couch wasn't comfortable, and the TV options were limited. I wish there was a Netflix login option. I'm hoping this is part of the hotel renovation. There's a tub near the window we didn't use, but it was a nice option. The ocean-view balcony was 10/10. The bathroom has a glass door, so not super private, but the shower was huge with a rainfall head. Closet space was great, and the robes and slippers got daily use. Overall, I was very happy with our stay. It's worth the money, and I felt like I was in an episode of White Lotus when they greeted us with champagne.

We did our homework before our trip and saw Zilara Cancun had good/decent reviews about their food. Let me tell you, this is probably the best food I've had in a long long time. Top dishes for me are the octopus with mole and lobster tostada from Maria Marie. If you like/can eat seafood, trust me on this. The drinks are phenomenal as well. There are signature drinks at all the restaurants. Those are mostly hits but some are misses (depends on your taste buds) PRO TIP: sign up for alcohol tastings at The Den first day you get there. We did tequila and wine tasting. It was quite a unique experience. SERVICE I've never gotten treated like this in any hotel I've been at. Chef's kiss for sure. The bellhop/front desk usually can break your 20s/100s into 1s so don't feel the need to exchange pesos (unless you want to of course). The workers at the hotel (and around Cancun overall) takes USD PRO TIP: there are a lot of activities hosted by the hotel. Morning exercise classes are really fun and the night shows are just okay. At Excellence you cannot breathe without someone asking if you need something. It took a long time for people to check on us and we tip well. Day 4 we finally found Humberto who was THE BEST! Find him and tip him well. ROOMS- they were good and I was happy with them! POOLS- the pools were fine. A little shaded. The most annoying part was the cabana situation.
