Now story time... I planned this vacation a while back through a travel company. I was always intending on traveling alone, so I made reservations for a single occupancy room. Unexpectedly, just weeks prior to leaving for this trip, my roommate had some time off and decided to meet me in Austria. My roommate was aware that there may not be an upgradeable room and that she may have to find a hotel room for herself because of the single occupancy room reservation, but when we showed up to check in, the clerk behind the front desk was incredibly stern and was definitely not going to allow my friend to stay in my room, and was also quite adamant that there were no other rooms available. No problem, my friend easily found another hotel and made a reservation. Here's the kicker to the whole story... the front desk at this hotel knew that my friend found a hotel to stay in, but every time we would show up to this hotel together, the front desk staff was very harsh and judgemental and would not even allow my friend to come up to the room. They made her stay in the lobby. It was as though I was 16 and my parents were making sure I didn't sneak my girlfriend up to my bedroom! I understand not wanting to run the risk of two people potentially sleeping in a single occupancy room... and I'm sure they've run into their fare share of idiots who have attempted to skirt that rule in the past... but I have NEVER stayed in any hotel that does not allow guests in your room at 2:00 in the afternoon! NEVER!!!! I honestly wish I could give this hotel 0 stars due to the compete disrespect and lack of common courtesy towards paying guests. I suppose the location of this hotel is enough to warrant a single star, but I HIGHLY suggest you forgo any reservations at this establishment unless you're feeling nostalgic and want to experience living in a strict college dorm setting while on vacation. I can't stress enough how aggravating the stay here has been. It has left an unfortunate terrible taste in my mouth for this otherwise absolutely amazing city. I have NEVER payed good money to be made to feel so childish, embarrassed and infuriated. The travel company which booked this hotel will be warned and it will be highly recommended that they immediately stop using this hotel in the future. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!!

The Good: :: it's a local business!…read more :: it's ADULTS ONLY. what does this mean? it means no screaming kids running up and down hallways at all hours. it means you get to really recharge and enjoy the peace and quiet. it means really being able to relax!!!!!!! it was a HUGE selling point for why i booked this place! :: they offer USB ports to charge your devices in multiple places in the room...this is AWEsome. comes in so handy as most devices these days require USB to charge. no need to use multiple adapters! :: breakfast is offered for a very small fee. it's delivered straight to your room and is very tasty, not at all a gross amount of food. healthy, tasty options, like fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bread roll, eggs :: coffee and tea are available free of charge 24-7 on the 2nd floor :: plenty of wine glasses, regular glasses, plates, bowls, cookware, etc on the 2nd floor if you want to make a meal. they also clean dishes so you don't have to worry about it! just leave it in the sink and they'll take care of it. :: elevator for use, which is incredibly handy for those on higher-level floors :: incredible views from your balcony. waking up every day and settling down every evening is a delight when you get to see the views accessible to you straight from the balcony. just incredible. being able to see the mountains and the clouds and fog against the water from the lake...so relaxing!!!! :: spacious showers. they also offer a tub if you wanted to soak :: room has a small refrigerator for use. it's got items in there that aren't free but just don't consume any of them and you're fine. :) :: wifi was solid :: location was awesome...only a 10-minute walk from the main part of Hallstatt. the best part about the location is that it is VERY quiet...you can escape the thick crowds during peak seasons when you make it back to your room and look out over the calm of the lake and mountains. serenity now!!!! :: the people are very helpful and friendly :: free parking! a rarity in Hallstatt The Bad: :: the heated floors aren't able to be turned off. however, if you get warm, just turn on the AC or open the balcony door for fresh air. watch for evening bugs that might be drawn to the light in the room! :: they don't take AMEX. no worries, though, just be sure to bring a Visa or Mastercard! When we dropped off our bags early, we checked in to find they had already been brought to our room. This was my first hint that this wasn't your average hotel. The room was huge and comfortable and homey (the bowl of walnuts was a nice touch). The heated bathroom floors were perfect for the chilly winter evenings. The rain shower was luxurious. Oh and did I mention they had an expresso machine in the room? I also loved the old radio and little library of books in the room. My boyfriend and I turned on some Christmas music, drank some beer we brought from Brussels and it was perfect. On Christmas Eve they had a little reception for the guests and gave personalized gifts to every family staying at the hotel. The morning breakfast had a huge variety of organic items. There were cheese plates galore, fresh squeeze juices, breads, cakes, you name it. I felt like royalty. Our stay here was the best hotel experience I have ever had, and I was sad to leave. If I have any complaint, it's that the hotel was so comfortable I probably spent more time in it and less time exploring the City than I should have! If I ever find myself back in Salzburg, there is no doubt I will find myself here again.

We stayed in the newer building and found it to be more than sufficient. The rooms appeared recently remodeled, had air conditioning, and there was a nice bar and lobby area. The main palace building, with the famous courtyard featured in The Sound of Music, is absolutely stunning. Every room and hallway is filled with beautiful artwork and elegant décor. There was a wedding taking place during our stay, and I could imagine that rooms overlooking the courtyard might be noisy during events. Most guest rooms are located in the newer building, which met all of our needs. We did have one issue when the power and lights in our room stopped working one evening, but the staff handled it professionally and quickly moved us to another room. Overall, this is a beautiful and unique hotel with incredible history and charm. We would definitely stay here again.

One of the most memorable nights I've ever stayed anywhere! This is an incredibly historic property…read morethat has a long history dating back to 1736. It has 55 rooms in the simpler and recently totality redone Meierhof Wing and 12 suites in the historic palace. While it's peaceful and secluded, It's only about a half hour walk (slightly uphill) through gorgeous gardens and parts of castles to the Old Town of Salzburg. There are 17 acres of manicured grounds and it's next to a beautiful small lake full of ducks with views of the mountains and the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress. The palace has been inhabited in the past by an Arch Bishop (whose heart is buried in the private chapel!), Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe (who was a spy in WW II) and Max Reinhardt, the incredible producer and creator of the Salzburg music festival. So many stories of intrigue in this palace! You can stay in a suite in the palace property itself, or they have an annex next-door. I stayed in the less expensive annex in their most simple room and they've all been redone and are very basic but perfectly comfortable and clean; the thing is you can spend as much time as you want next door in the palace. So I checked in and then walked over to the palace and stayed there all day. You can even stay into the night exploring the rooms and reading books in the library, walking up and down the stairs and seeing all the various paintings and incredible curiosities, pieces of art, and sit in the private baroque chapel. In the evenings, there's a bar and restaurant that's open late in the Meierhof wing. Of course the ultimate is to book one of the beautiful suites in the palace; some of them have great names like the "Marlene Dietrich" suite (who actually stayed here in the palace) and I believe that the "Max Reinhardt" suite is one of the best ones. I can't describe how amazing it is to be able to stay in an 18th century baroque palace with original furnishings and to sit in the chairs and read the books and actually touch the antiques. There are no "do not touch" signs, so you can really feel at home. I can only imagine all the intrigues that went on here! It's a bit like the movie "Dangerous Liasons"! The palace has been used as a location in several films, including some scenes of "The Sound of Music". If you're staying here, they basically give you full access to the palace (other than the private rooms, of course). The lake is absolutely gorgeous and the hotel has bikes that you can use for no extra charge and bike around the lake and town on the paths. My favorite thing was in the evening to walk around the palace, and explore the various rooms. The library is spectacular. It has a hidden door convered with books that leads to a spiral staircase which goes up to the top second level of the library. It's unfortunately blocked off, but it's so fun to find the door! Breakfast in the morning is held in the ballroom and it's one of the most beautiful rooms I've ever seen in my travels. I can't say that breakfast is the best ever but it's good. Even the most gorgeous "Palace" hotels I've stayed in like the Palace Hotel in Saint Moritz or maybe the Crillon in Paris don't have the authentic faded original glamour that this property has. It's really a must to stay here, even for one night. I'll never forget my wonderful night here. It's so easy to get to the Salzburg airport as well. I think it took me less than 20 minutes in a taxi.

Despite that, late at night, the hotel demanded an additional charge for the children and told us we would have to leave immediately if we did not pay. We tried to resolve the issue calmly, but the situation became aggressive and intimidating. The owner is an aggressive person, he attacked me and grabbed my phone for hostage, even though it was our main way to communicate and manage things while traveling internationally. My wife was treated harshly when she asked for the phone back, our children became scared, we had to call the police. The room also had major problems: many insects/flies, dirty and smelly sheets, and a second sleeping area/loft that felt unsafe. The ceiling was extremely low, the stairs were narrow and dangerous, and cables were in the way. It did not feel safe or practical for a family, especially at night. If you want a peaceful vacation without stressful surprises, I strongly recommend avoiding this hotel. This place is a scam! They charge hundreds of dollars through priceline and then they ask for additional crazy insane amounts of money for no reason. I never recommend this crappy hotel!

Here are just a few of the many things we liked: - The gorgeous, quiet, and immaculately clean room. It was by far the most spacious of any we stayed in, and had AC, which of course isn't always true in Europe. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and we enjoyed the balcony. The bathroom had a separate WC room and lovely shower, although I should mention that the sliding doors to the bathroom itself are glass (clearly meant more for couples than friends). - The hotel is both very modern and so charming. We loved the spectacular mountain views, watching the rabbits in their hutch, and playing ping pong on the porch! Also, it's worth noting that this hotel has an elevator. - The breakfast was delicious, with an outstanding selection - croissants, seeded rolls, cold cuts, cheeses, Nutella and jams, muesli, bacon and sausage, eggs, fresh cut fruit... even smoothies one morning! - The wellness center is amazing, and features three different saunas and a beautiful room with chairs to just stretch out and relax. We found this so rejuvenating after a challenging hike. - The professional and very responsive staff. On the first morning, our showerhead wouldn't remain upright and we reported it before leaving for the day. By the time we returned in the late afternoon, it was fixed. It's important to be aware that Hotel Garni Frauenschuh is located about 20 minutes by bus outside of Salzburg's city center. However, the 21 bus is reliable and stops just outside the hotel, so navigating back and forth without a car is very simple.

For those of you addicted to a brand name experience, a stunning breakfast buffet and a spa within, go elsewhere. But to have a period experience in Salzburg, I would stay here again.

Each room is equipped with a battery operated safe that consist of 4 AA batteries. We were skeptical to use this in case battery died with our passports and valuables which was an inconvenience. Our room did not have a fridge but my family got a 4 person room next door. It was a queen bed with two twin separated by a sliding door. They had a fridge and hot water kettle.
