You want a cottage? You got it! I wanted a place to sleep after a midday ferry from NS, and this…read morewas located right along my route the right distance from Port-aux-Basques. (I was spying on a couple of coastal lighthouses - there's one at the end of Route 406.) Anyway, this is a weird one. Another place that communicated through email to me. Luckily I had enough Internet in the 24 hours leading up to my stay to see that they just directed me to a specific cottage and said it'd be unlocked with the key inside. Okay... got me wondering if people could just stop here and go into an empty cottage for the night. Until today when I was trying to figure out the place (ended up parking, walking around, got my bearings and found my cottage), and upon connecting to the Internet saw a message to park near my cottage instead of the owner's house. So okay, you saw me! Maybe they were curious what I was doing and would have come outside if I persisted. Anyway, finally figured out where to go: Turn down the paved driveway, not the unpaved one. When you get to the bottom of the hill, the building on your right is the highest numbered cottages (8-9-10 I think). The smaller ones to your left are #7-1 in order. The house at the end is the owner, past cottage 1. All of that... well, they were nice and communicated where to find food in the area, though I packaged it over the course of the day to avoid issues if the ferry landed as late as I thought it would. (It turned out to be an hour early, so I could totally have gone with Codroy's recommendations.) Families playing outside, so I learned the walls are not all that thick. You get a nice little cottage with a kitchen and a little living room, but you don't get clear direction on managing room temperature. Finally found the unit on the wall next to the bathroom. This is not a hotel, this is truly a cottage, I guess. Since I'm not a cottage expert. End result: I never met anyone to chat with, and I couldn't have called the number they offered if I needed to without a Canadian cell phone. Overall it's a nice place to stay for a few days and explore the area, if you're independent-minded. Not being on the highway, I get why it's not a traditional hotel, and I'm grateful they could spare a cottage for 1 night, so I'll split the balance and start them off with 4 stars.
