Berghotel Mummelsee
(12 reviews)
The Schwarzwald did not cooperate the day we drove through. The entire forest was shrouded in…read moreclouds that reduced our visibility to about a five-yard radius around the car. Because of this, the Mummelsee was only a sign indicating a parking lot that we managed to glimpse on the side of the road. Relieved to get off the road, we decided to stop here for our requisite Black Forest cake. Let me start by saying that this hotel is a very cozy place to relax if stuck in the Black Forest during bad weather. Even though the views were of nothing but white, the restaurant was very comfortable. However, do not eat here if you are in anything resembling a hurry. Lunch for three with dessert managed to eat up two hours of our day. I'm not sure how much of this is cultural and how much is the restaurant, but everyone here moves SLOOOOOWLY. When there is nothing better to do, it's not a big deal, but if we had actually had a day with good weather, I would have been very frustrated. That said, the food was worth stopping for. It is classic German cuisine done well. I was particularly thrilled to get schmalz and dark bread as a starter. Kid was very excited to eat spaetzle with gravy. "It's like noodles!" Husband and I ordered rather blindly, as the server didn't offer us a menu in English (which I saw later that they did have), and our guesses worked out well. It was an altogether pleasant meal topped off with a really outstanding Black Forest cake. If you need a place to stop just to check that particular item off of your tourist list, this is a great place to do it. Another good reason to stop is the excellent store below the restaurant. They have all sorts of Black Forest treats to take with you. We left with a BF ham, a kirchwasser salami, and a bottle of schnapps. Yum. So even if you never actually get to see the view, I would still recommend this as a stop on your Black Forest drive...who knows, the lake actually might be pretty, too!

Atmosphere: the restaurant has a very welcoming appearance. There is ample seating for various size parties. There is even a children's play area near the front of the cafe. The large windows/doors open onto a wonderful view of Mummelsee, though it was far too foggy the day we visited to see much of it. Staff: the waiter was attentive and ensured we had everything we needed. Unfortunately, one of our party received the wrong order, but the situation was resolved. Food: as we only had coffee and cake, I can only comment on that. It was thoroughly delicious. Please be aware that some of the desserts do have liqueur in them, so double check before ordering them as they may not be what you expect. Overall, this is a very nice cafe to stop at if you're traveling through the Black Forest and need a break to stretch your legs.

Landhotel Salmen

This review is for our 5-day stay back in 2012... Yeah, I kept saying I'd get around to it…read more Landhotel Salmen is a small-ish guesthouse, a few miles outside Oberkirch. (You almost certainly need a GPS to find it; ours was on the fritz.) It's family-run, in the best way: Everyone cares about making you happy, and they go out of their way to find out what you need. The guy at the front desk offered to loan us his own GPS, for instance, while we were trying to figure out how to fix ours. In addition to the breakfast that was included (nothing "wow" by German standards, though I remember it fondly), the kitchen also makes a good traditional dinner, and plenty of locals stop by. Next door is a kirsch distillery, which means you can do some taste-testing and stumble back to your room a little drunkenly. (Also with a few bottles to take home.) The price was more than reasonable, too. When we get back to the area again, it's going to be our first choice.

The hotel and staff of the Dorint in Baden Baden definitely deserves a 5 star rating. When…read morechecking in, Isabell who was working the front desk noticed that I was celebrating my birthday(a big one!) the next day. The staff made sure to make my birthday special in many ways. On my birthday, Mr Sablottni, the restaurant manager, greeted me with birthday wishes and seated us in a private room for my birthday breakfast. A very decadent chocolate birthday cake was delivered to me during our breakfast. Later, champagne & cake was delivered to our room for us to enjoy on our spacious balcony overlooking the city of Baden Baden. During our stay, all of the staff went out of their way to help us with directions, recommendations, and reservations. I was very pleased with our hotel room which was spacious and updated. The hotel's location is convenient for walking to restaurants and shops in Baden Baden. We have stayed in many luxury hotels and the Dorint in Baden Baden is my favorite!

First morning I couldn't use navigation in rented car, man from the front desk came out and set it up. Right now I'm watching old Russian couple at the breakfast. All little details are done with love and smart way for customers. Bedding is hypoallergenic and comfortable. My room has beautiful view and a little balcony. I enjoyed pool, spa and face&body massage. Katrin is very professional and polite. Spa area is spotless also. Everyone I met outside was friendly, helpful and not irritated by tourists. I'm in love with Germany

If you have a rental car like we did, the drive is not long (about 10-15 min). The scenery is gorgeous- we had a view of the vineyards from our balcony- and the hotel is so charming and well-kept. The lower level of the hotel has a fitness room and spa with a sauna, whirlpool/jacuzzi, steam bath, and a sun deck. It was all very pleasant and relaxing. They do charge 4 euro for the whirlpool but everything else is free. Parking is no extra charge and hassle-free...they have spaces right in front of the hotel and some a little off to the side as well. They also offer a luggage cart to save you multiple trips. Wi-fi only costs 1 euro per day. The hotel has an elevator and air conditioning! Bed was comfy. The breakfast here was very nice- we did not eat lunch or dinner in the restaurant so I cannot comment on the other meals but if it's anything like the rest of the hotel, I'm sure it's amazing. The staff, especially the woman who runs the front desk (owner?) is SO incredibly sweet and helpful. Anything we needed, any question we had, all we had to do was ask and it was handed over to us with a friendly smile. The staff we encountered spoke English rather well so communication wasn't an issue for us. Upon check-in, we were even given cards that gave us discounts at popular places to visit in town (the casino, Caracalla Spa, etc.) We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and look forward to returning some day!

Made up of several separate buildings, each multi-floor unit is quiet, clean and comfortable. These buildings are within a neighborhood so you're away from any bustling traffic or noise. Not that Zell has the noise of a large city, but there is fairly constant traffic throughout the day. The rooms are cozy, clean and just right. I stayed on the second floor of one of the buildings, facing the back garden. I had a nice small balcony to go out one, if I wanted. Within the main building is a bar and full restaurant. The restaurant is where you can can have breakfast, lunch or dinner. Breakfast consisted of a buffet style breakfast with many different options to choose from. For dinner, the restaurant is open to the public so you are likely to meet locals when dining in. Everything that I tried on the menu was great. I don't remember all of the items that I tried, but I didn't have anything that I didn't like. This hotel doesn't feel like a hotel. It has more of an apartment feel that really feels like home rather than your typical apartment. For the most part, many on staff at the hotel do speak a certain level of English. Some more than others and some not much at all. This is where Google Translate and a little bit of proactive homework come into play. I always like to learn some basic greetings and phrases when traveling to a non-English speaking country. Hello, goodbye, good morning, please, thank you, etc. I've always been of the mindset that most other countries either mandate English speaking classes in school or people take the initiative to learn. The least that I can do is try to show the same respect and learn what I can. The location of the hotel is just outside of the center of Zell. Zell is a small quaint village that is absolutely stunning. You're about a 5 - 10 minute walk from the center of town and I would encourage anyone to make the walk and stroll down the main street and have a look at the shops and stop in one of the restaurants for a drink or a meal. Would I go back? As this hotel is close to Nordrach, where I have one of my offices, then yes, I will definitely be back. I probably wouldn't normally find myself in this part of Germany, but it is my good fortune that I get to visit this area periodically. Zell and Nordrach are beautiful parts of the country consisting of big green landscapes surrounded by hills and mountains that are perfectly picturesque.
