Is this a luxury hotel? No. Is it a great, clean, decent hotel in an excellent location with super-nice, extremely-helpful staff? Absolutely. The big question: Would I stay there again? In a heartbeat, though I'd probably upgrade to a Junior Suite (at this writing about 160 Euro vs 110 Euro for a Superior Double) and, if it's hot outside, make sure the A/C in my suite worked vigorously.
We were there 2 nights in early September, 2014, and had a Superior Double room. It was very clean, but tiny, with only a very short bar for hanging clothes and no drawers, shelves, or cabinets and not even room to wheel our suitcases past the beds. The bathroom was very modern, clean, and nice-looking, but had almost no room to sit things around the sink.
It was hot, even at night, in Istanbul and the A/C -- and admittedly we're from Texas where we're used to ice-cold A/C as an assumed necessity -- teetered on the thin line between acceptable and unacceptable (if it had been any warmer, the room would have been so warm as to keep us from going to sleep), even with the blackout drapes kept firmly closed and the A/C being continuously manually pushed into it's temporary-automatically-times-out super-cool-down mode. We complained to the desk, but they said that the A/C was working as it should. If it had been any warmer we would have had to try to find another hotel; as it was, it was adequate, if only barely by a hair's breadth.
The rooftop dining area was very nice, both inside and outside, with a beautiful view, and the included breakfast was excellent. They do not serve dinner, per se, but have a menu from a nearby restaurant and will bring food from there and serve it to you. We did that and loved our meal.
In making reservations from the U.S. the reservation staff was very responsive, with good English skills, and the staff was equally responsive and friendly in person as well. One good thing to know: They can arrange private cars for transportation between the airport and the hotel or between the hotel and the cruise port at a much lower rate than you can book them directly. Taxis might be a little cheaper, I don't know, but with the many warnings about taxi use in Istanbul, this is reliable, hassle-free, and very reasonably priced.
Niles is on a side street a couple of blocks off a major east-west street. We walked the blocks around the hotel, which are all business-lined, and found them to be safe, vibrant, and engaging during the day. We didn't go out at night, but I think they would have felt pretty safe, then, as well. The Grand Bazaar is less than 1,000 feet away, and the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace complex just over half a mile. read more
