I was supposed to be on a United flight back to Houston, but a rainstorm in Navagantes, and less than stellar airline service (Gol and United), led me to the Lapa area of Rio de Janeiro for the night. It was a long cab ride from the international airport, and a trip a work colleague and I didn't want to take it at 2 AM, especially with no idea of whether we were going anywhere safe. However, our "friendly" Gol representative gave us our choice - take the Hotel they offered or sleep out on the streets.
Another thing to know about Brazil (beside the language barrier and often disengaged customer service) is that placing international calls requires dialing the applicable public utility into the sequence and even then things may not work out. It took about 30 minutes of back and forth with the guy at the desk (who was a model of customer service compared to the guy at Gol) to figure out the system and then when I finally got connected to my lovely Bride (to let her know that I wouldn't be home for Thanksgiving), the line cut out and never to return. At least the Wi-Fi here was decent.
My somewhat plain room at the Hotel Monte Alegre was OK, considering my state of mind and the time of night. The bed was comfortable enough, the shower water was hot and strong, and the room was well insulated from the street noise.
Breakfast was even better, with lots of choices and excellent coffee. The Hotel building itself had English architectural touches, and some cool Portuguese tile designs in places inside.
I also took the opportunity to walk around the neighborhood in the morning before heading out. And yes, it seemed safe, but this isn't Reykjavik after all. Rio is a big and busy City, so without a map or a guide, who knows what I missed seeing in my relatively short walk about. But it was pretty cool observing the hustle and bustle, and the sheer variety of businesses located in close proximity to each other. I'd love to return here and to this Hotel another time under better circumstances. read more
