Assisi itself is astoundingly beautiful and the Nun fits right in, blending historical architectural elements with modern amenities and comforts. The staff knew what being a five-star hotel requires - they foresaw what we might need or want during the visit and made sure we had it: spa intro, restaurant recommendations, and a little prosecco. My specialty spaghetti looked like it was tossed in dirt topped with what looked like red fish eggs. For such price we would have expected top cuisine. Two bites and we were done. Food was gross. The pasta was in a brownish sauce that had a terrible flavor. We finished bottle of wine and headed back to our hotel room to eat snacks. Any hole in the wall is better than this place. Wonderful people, good hotel, we extended our stay from 1 night to 4. Only drawback is that to get to town centre, you have a steep 20 minute climb up medieval lanes and alleys. Quite testing but do- able. I'm nearly 69 and did it with 1 stop, which just happened to be a bar with cold beer! Don't forget it is downhill all the way back!

Hotel is the former residence of a Cardinal from about 400-500 years ago. Nice place to stay in town, convenient to everything and a five minute walk to the free covered escalators and elevator which take you up to the cathedral, castle, and beautiful winding streets of the old city. Rooms are very clean and nicely furnished. Buffet breakfast is average. We stayed for 4 days in October, when the weather is perfect and the big crowds are gone. They had bargain rates in effect for a very nice room. Also, it's only a 30 minute inexpensive train ride from Spoleto to Assisi, which makes a wonderful day trip.

It was one of those "buy the ticket then figure out when you're going" situations (if anyone else does that...). Luckily, this wound up being a great decision. The Relais is the quintessentially charming Italian getaway we were hoping for. The staff is exceptionally friendly (and for the most part speaks nearly perfect English - a major plus when your Italian is as cringe-worthy as mine). They really were fantastic. Be forewarned, the resort itself is about 35-40 minute drive from the actual city of Perugia. There is basically nothing on-site except their passable restaurant and a small spa. It's perfect for people who really want to unwind, but not ideal as a home-base for touring the area. (One half-star off for this.) The restaurant on-site is OK, but honestly was one of our least favorite meals in Italy. (Another half-star off for this.) We wound up going down the street several times to a small place called La Locanda del Colle; you will absolutely need a reservation because it's tiny and DELICIOUS. My recommendations if you pass through and decide to stay in the area: brace yourself for the most unbelievable views, morning and night. It's truly breathtaking! Also, if you are looking for a wine tour, we really liked Gusto Wine Tours. They are local and regularly pick folks up from the Relais. (No Yelp page so just shouting out here!)

The breakfast was fantastic (really good cake1). We absolutely loved it. I rarely give five stars always thinking there is at least one thing that can be improved but nope, nothing here. It is perfection.
