It is in Allrode. The roads from Allrode to Thale and Quedlinburg are long and winding and full of switchbacks and a bit treacherous. And yet, there are not especially good mountain views up in Allrode. It is not one of the more interesting parts of the Harz. If we're going to drive up those kinds of roads, we want some nice views or extremely interesting hiking trails. Also, you can hold a reservation with a Visa credit card via travel sites, but the hotel does not actually take Visa, which is totally bizarre. There is no ATM nearby. On the positive side, it was clean and pleasant, and the clothes-drying device in the bathroom was nice. Plus, the breakfast buffet was very good.
This was not a good experience for us, perhaps because we're Americans. We had a person in our group who could understand and speak some German, but he did not understand the local dialect, so we could not communicate very well. I think Germans may have a better time here, but I don't recommend it for foreigners, and you should avoid it like the plague if you don't have a car. It is not near any train station as far as I can tell.
The price is good, but there is a reason for that. Welcome to Nowhere.
