My wife and I stayed at this Hotel on 17th September. After reading their website, we selected a…read moretwo storey apartment. Our reservation was confirmed by email. On arrival (at 19:00 hours) the door was locked, unlit and the door bell surrounded by cobwebs. Our ring was eventually answered by Marcus Velten who immediately required my wife's signature before showing us not an apartment but a converted attic, with many faults: -No headroom over bed -Musty smell - Useless balcony with space for maximum 1 person, one broken plastic chair and a sunless Northern aspect. -Impossible kitchenette (actually just a mini-kitchen) squeezed next to a bed (see later fire hazard point) with not a single item of equipment, cutlery or crockery -Bathroom ventilating onto bedroom with unfixed basin -old, worn and un-pressed nylon bed linen etc., etc. When we were shown the accommodation it bore no relation to the two storey apartment we booked and we later noted that the latter was having building works done to it. As an Architect I also noted that the converted attic fell well short of the building standards that would have been expected in the UK, in particular on combustible materials and means of escape in the event of fire. We carried our bags to our room, halfway through which process the Hotel door was again locked behind my back (at around 17:45hrs) and I had to unlock it myself whilst carrying the remaining baggage from the car. We then went down to eat that evening, and I am sure our body language was pure disappointment; with an obvious intent to leave as soon as practicable. After poor food and nervous service, we were unexpectedly presented at our table by Mr Velten with his two young sons (much embarrassed) and during this uncomfortable encounter carefully told that the children's mother was a lawyer. On leaving the restaurant to go to our room we were required to pay immediately, in cash, for our meal rather than put on our hotel bill, as would be normal. We decided to leave the next morning. Since we had only reserved (#3) the room for 7 nights we assumed that we could leave early as long as we paid for our actual stay. We got up early and chose to miss breakfast (but still pay for it) so as to get away without making a scene. We explained this to Carolin Velten at the reception desk, who became increasingly angry, eventually shouting at me, despite my requests for calm. She told me perhaps 15 times that she was a lawyer and that I had to pay for the 7 days even if my wife and I left after one day. She said that there was a contract for the 7 days rent, which was therefore her money and we had to pay it (#3 does not say this, and anyway we did not get the apartment we reserved). We were then told that the police had been called but that we could settle the 7 days at 50% provided we did so before the police arrived. I was told that I did not understand German law and that because my reservation was a contract the police would enforce it if they arrived with the implication that I would be arrested if I did not pay it all. From my own experience of the law, I believe that Carolin Velten was wrong, and that using the threat of the Police was just an unpleasant way to extract money from me. Given that my wife and I were on holiday, and that we had come away to help my wife recuperate (after major surgery), I decided - against my natural instinct not to fight the wrong being done to us. I therefore paid the 50%. My wife and I, both in our 50's, have used your guides and stayed in many German Hotels over the years, and always found them to be exceptionally, friendly, clean, fair and of a high standard. The Hotel Landgasthof Lambach was none of these, damaging for us a trust we had built up with holidays and hotels in Germany.
