The hotel just re-opened. The new owner, chef and staff are very friendly and helpful. The food used to be very bad, now it is delicious again. We just stayed there for a week this December. read more

Hotel Schweizerhof Engelberg

Schweitzerhof is located right next to the train station in Engelberg, which makes it a very convenient destination for tourists. Across the street from it there are couple of bars and restaurants, as well as a Mammut sports and rental centre. The rooms are spacious, clean and very nice. The bathroom was also big and quite modern. The staff at the reception was polite and helpful: in the last day they let us use their lobby for many hours (we were a large group, so we were literally taking up all the space in their lobby) and even served us some fruits. Very important to mention is that the food we had at their restaurant was great: not only very tasty, but also attractively arranged on the plate. And they have a separate Cheese room, where they only serve fondue and raclette in a traditional atmosphere. You cannot leave Engelberg without having the traditional fondue pot and that's one of the nicest and well priced places to have it! For the hotel however, be prepared to empty your pockets, as you can easily spend around 200 chf/night. But it's worth pampering / being pampered every once in a while, isn't it? :)

The buffet breakfast at the pavilion was above average, with a nice selection of local meats, cheeses, fresh juices, homemade breads and even sparkling wine. I can't speak to other meals at the hotel since we dined out for other meals and only spent two days there. Our primary complaint was that the room wasn't available for the early checkin, despite pre-requesting same through virtuoso. When we planned our trip we were unaware that we would be visiting during carnal all, and nothing could have prepared us for the craziness! It was like Mardi Gras on speed, with insane costumes and people of all ages singing, dancing, playing music, eating and drinking in the streets. There as even a party on Saturday night in the lobby, lobby bar, and ballroom of the hotel that went until 4 am. What a blast!!

A perfect place to stay. :-) Loved it, you will, too!

It was surprisingly quiet for the bell parades that were going on for 3 days and nights. The staff knew your name and what room you stayed in even if you have never seen them before. Also they let me check in early the day after christmas so major points to the cleaning crew for coming in early to make the room. Everything was perfect until I re-read my bill the night after checking out. The bed had broke in the middle of the night on the 27th and I didnt notice of course until I woke up. I immedietly let the staff know and they promply fixed it while I was out. When I checked out the man at the front desk was professional but not very friendly with me. I dont know if it was because I was an American, younger, a woman or a foreigner that he was so nice to the German gentleman in front of me but had a less friendlier attitude when I talked to him. I am now back a day later to talk about the 50% bed repair for 100 chf I have on my bill. I asked to speak to someone about the charge and was handed the concierge phone at the front desk. It is Simon the owner/manager that checked me out. I ask why I have to pay for a bed I did not break, he says the break is not common and that the cost is 200chf and he graciously already paid for half. I told him how it happened in the middle of the night and that I should not have to pay for bed maintenence. I was acused this time that I must have 'jumped on the bed, or 'made aggressive movements' or had 'rough lovemaking' in the bed because it broke near the head and it shouldnt do that. He also stated that roughly 6,000 people come through the hotel per year and that the beds are fine for them. Again I explain that all I did was sleep or sit on the bed and if I had broken it myself I would have said so and paid the repair bill in full but since that is not the case I would like that portion refunded. He did offer to give me a copy of the invoice so that my insurance can reimburse me which is proper and I am glad that he is kind to offer. However he still insisted that it was my fault and it was generous that he has already paid half of the repair bill. Since I have no way to prove that the bed was previously broken, well used or faulty it seems that I am the unlucky fool that has to pay for it. I left that hotel in near tears feeling like I was branded a lier and unreasonable. The entire conversation I was calm and polite but in the end I felt like he did not care. For a Michelin hotel to treat their customers like that is unthinkable. Everything was perfect until that point.

HUH? I was surprised with a trip to the Iglu-Dorf in Engelberg! Not knowing exactly what to expect was definitely part of the fun so I won't give it all away in my review, but here are some HIGHLIGHTS: 1) Friendly, knowledgable, helpful guides that are fluent in English and German. 2) HUGE igloo. It's much bigger than it looks from the outside complete with a bar and dining room! 3) Beautifully decorated inside with detailed ice sculptures in every room. Every year the sculptures focus around a different theme; this year's theme was "Comics & Cartoons." Characters from The Lion King, South Park, Snoopy, and many others were all carved in ice. We had the Batman room! 4) Delicious dinner with charcuterie & cheese, mushroom soup, fondue, and prosecco! For dessert we had chocolate cupcakes and coffee gelato! They definitely feed you well. It's very rich and FILLING, but much needed to survive the night. 5) Lovely guided moonlit night-hike around the Lake at Engelberg. They provide the snow shoes and trekking poles (as well as a little nip of Jägermeister half way through!) 6) There is a jacuzzi/hot tub IN the igloo! (So that's what I needed the bikini for...) Take full advantage of this-- it's SO nice after the hour hike in the snow, and it'll really warm you up before you go to bed. 7) TOASTY sleeping bags! Arctic-rated sleeping bags are no joke, and staying the night in the igloo much warmer than I would have ever expected... I would totally recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new experience! It's an exceptional and truly memorable once in a lifetime adventure!
Sleep in an igloo A…read morenight at the Iglu Dorf is definitely a cool experience. There are a few places in Switzerland where they offer the night in the igloo. The one in Engelberg/Trübsee is with 1800m probably one of the lowest places, but with the Titlis mountain right beside it makes a fantastic two day trip and we had plenty of snow. After a small walk the dinner is served, Gerber fondue. I had better, but I didn't expect too much in an igloo. It is the experience that counts. At the bar various drinks can be bought. I don't recommend booking the special candle light dinner, as it is simply just means that you get a table for two alone and a bottle of white wine. Our group was an internationally mix of nice people. Hence mingling is no problem. The guides are very friendly and help to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The igloos are decorated with a different theme each year. I was a bit disappointed that there were no ice scupltures and not a classical ice bar. Maybe they change that next year. A cool thing is the Jacuzzi where you can have a hot bath and see the stars above you, as the igloo is open on the top at the hot tub. There is a heated room where you can get changed, so definitely bring your swimming clothes! The personal igloo room is nicely decorated and illuminated with LEDs. The bed is lined with fur and has a special sleeping bag. With a normal pyjama you will heat up the air and not freeze. The igloo is constant at around 0 degree, and I definitely did not feel cold during the night. We had a room with it's own WC. Else you may have to walk 40m to get to the public toilette during the night ;-) The breakfast is served early in the morning at the Alpstübli restaurant, which is a 10min walk from the igloo. All in all a very special experience, I definitely would do it again.
