The hotel is right by an U-Bahn station and within a short walk of an S-Bahn station, so I'd actually consider staying there for future visits to Berlin (i.e., not only when taking an early flight) because the cost is certainly more reasonable than in central Berlin. I'd requested a top floor/quiet room and we had no problems with noise. The rooms have a/c (not a standard option in Germany), although we didn't need to use it. The room was spotless, and the shower stall was a more reasonable size than the minuscule ones we'd encountered at several previous hotels. The front desk staff were all pleasant and efficient. There's also free coffee and gelato on the first floor. The (free) buffet breakfast was *terrific*; it was very extensive and everything tasted great (there was also a lot of meat, which we don't eat). The only reason why I'm giving three stars instead of four is because of the HORRENDOUS WiFi. Not only was it *incredibly* slow and not only did it cut us off frequently, but we had to stand by the door of our room for a lengthy period each time we got cut off (in order to get back online).

We had been traveling all day and had a few questions about breakfast and other things. She seemed annoyed to be bothered. There was no one else waiting to check in. She didn't tell us about the internet password. I tried to call the front desk but no one answered. We walked down to the desk. She again had a bad attitude when we asked about the password. She said it was in the back of the little folder she had given us with the keys. She seemed to think we were stupid for missing it. Anyway, I recommend this hotel. Just hope someone else is working the front desk. Plus it's really close to Tegel airport.

I just spent an hour and a half in the lobby walking someone back home (the US) through what i needed done on the internet...utterly frustrated. Also, it is not a good place to stay for tourists, very much out of the way. Not a bad experience if you don't have anything important to do, but if you need internet and convenience I'd recommend staying somewhere else.

We've paid, and used it once! The bathrooms are not share-friendly. You can see and hear everything! The aircondition is not good! We booked 2 rooms 5 months ago and our rooms are not only separated, but on 2 different floors.

The room I stayed in looked sad. The light next to the narrow bed did not work. And it felt dark in…read morethere. The bathroom was a long narrow tunnel. The shower was cold unless you kept it running for ten minutes. The second night I turned on the water some time before I got ready to take the shower. There are no blinds on the bathroom window so you feel exposed when sitting on the toilet. So I turned out the lights since I like to have my privacy in the bathroom. The second lock on the room-door was broken and the room felt unsafe since right outside the window was a passway for the neighbours and anybody could have opened these old windows easily and get in. All in all the whole time in the Hotel Gates Novum Berlin felt depressing and unsafe. Like what hotels were like in the 1980s. But this is 2013! I will never stay in this hotel again and cannot recommend it at all. Sorry.

On entering the hotel I was hopeful - modern, comfortable reception area, trendily dark restaurant area leading out to a small back garden - but the reception staff were pretty unfriendly and after waiting for quite a while for my room to be ready I was dismayed to discover I'd been given the disabled room which looked right out on to the street (and yes, people could look straight in too!) Still, it was a pretty comfortable place to sleep and the breakfast next morning was pretty nice too. The coolest part of the hotel was its proximity to a climbing wall / art / squat complex further down Revaler Strasse where we enjoyed a nice beer before our show.

HSH (Home Sweet Home) really did become our home away from home during our stay in Berlin for the…read moremarathon. We stayed for 4 nights and the location and amenities were great for us. The location was convenient, about a 20 minute walk or 10-15 minute subway ride for most locations downtown. The closest stop for the U bahn is around the corner and the S train is less than 5 minutes away. Nearby are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and even late night take out spots. Like most of Berlin, the neighborhood is a bit dark at night, though seemed quite safe. The rooms are large with plenty of space to stretch out. Our room had a bed for 2 and a fold out sofa so we comfortably fit 4 adults inside for our stay. The balcony was a nice touch and allowed us to enjoy the nice weather. The wifi, as noted, is a bit restrictive and not that fast, limited to two devices at once which was a bit limiting for 4 people. There is no AC, but the balcony and windows open for getting some air. In total, it was a great place to spend our time in Berlin.

Some areas fell flat for me however. I asked for a spoon in the dining area so I can eat my takeout, they gave me spoons with actual crust on them. They were gross. It made me not ever want to try dinner at the hotel because I no longer trusted their cleanliness. Also, my sink was clogged. I didn't request a new room because my trip was long and it would have required too much energy to get a new one. The room I had was also very far from the nearest elevator. I had to walk down several halls to get there which is bothersome with luggage. Another highlight was the bathroom. The water got very hot very fast. It was a stand up shower that looked very clean. The room felt a bit cramped, but they did manage to fit four beds in one room, which is impressive in itself, especially knowing each bed had their own outlet. There was plenty of table space and the tv seemed to be motion activated. There's a kitchen area in the second floor. The fridge smelled but that's where you find the convenient laundry. There's a vending machine as well which I liked. The only negative about that is that the put different snacks in the same row. Something you want could be behind something you do want which is kind of a tease. The beds were comfortable to me. And the room was very clean upon arrival. The place wasn't expensive so I think you get around what you pay for. If I were management, I would work on the details. The little things that could make you lose faith in the owners. Whether it's double checking to make sure everything works properly and is up to standards. The concepts and idea behind the systems are very efficient and convenient. Execution and attention to detail needs to be improved.
