Like in old novels, behind a door on a cobbled street, is a hotel and a tavern for any lost soul that happened to be here. In fact, it seems the place is very popular - during our short 20 minute conversation with Anne, who I assumed was the owner, she answered two phone calls asking for reservations months in advance. I take it we were here in a low season and thus managed to book it mid-afternoon the same day. Upon booking, we immediately got a call back from Anne, asking whether we would like to have a dinner and confirming the arrival time. This place is simple, old and uniquely charming, with a personal touch on everything you may see. It is a perfect mix of all things old with a modern twist. Impeccably remodeled rooms (ours was hidden high under the roof) with low ceilings and a fireplace, but all modern amenities - brand new windows, showers, heating units. A spacious green terrace on the hill hugging the building that you would never know is there looking just from the street- with lounge chairs and dinning tables. An old bar with 4-5 wooden tables, serving locally brewed beer. A small counter offering local specialties - jams, preserves, honey, soap. A bright breakfast room with everything your heart desires, including a Nespresso machine, for the addict in you. Tiny details here and there that are so well put in place. I don't know how this family does it and I was astonished how well the place is run. Anne seemed to have a small team of maybe 2 or 3 people that prepared a delicious dinner for a dozen or so guests. Talk about local ingredients - I bet it all has been sourced from the nearby hills. Food was delicious and worthy of any high end Parisian spot. Rooms were spotless clean. Common areas smartly designed and cozy. Breakfast room was ready at 8 am to serve any guests who wanted to leave early. Rooms were quiet and you could get a feeling you are the only one in the whole house. All in all during our 10 day road trip in France this was the best place we stayed at. I am so happy we found it online, as this is one of those nights the memories of which will last forever.

El Castell de Ciutat is located about ten kilometers from the border of Andorra, in the Urgellet Valley. The hotel is a somewhat cozy structure of wood sitting below the castle of Seu d'Urgell. Also, the hotel rooms all have balconies that provide impressive views of the Cadi Mountains. We were on a Tauck tour that arranged the owners of the Hotel/Castle to be sure that our stay was a memorable one. They arranged on our first evening live music concert in the castle, on another evening, a private cheese tasting and dinner event in the castle. But what was an interesting and somewhat educational event was the start to finish the making of a seafood paella. The best part we had the pleasure to eat it for lunch with some fabulous wine. So besides a great activities that we had the great pleasure to enjoy the hotel has a beautiful spa and heated indoor swimming pool. I truly enjoyed our visit very much and we must also commend the director of our Tauck tour that was a large part of our wonderful experience at the El Castell de Ciutat.

Situated on a bluff overlooking the charming, upscale small city of Le Seu d' Urgell, this family run resort is truly lovely. It's only 10 minutes to the Andorran border, so we spent an entire day hiking high up in El Serrat. Following a day of hiking it's great to come back to the pool, the terrace and a glass of wine. A couple of service glitches and one issue -- it turned out to be minor -- was the wifi. It was weak and spotty and It simply did not work in our room, so we needed to go to the lobby to communicate back home or use google. I'd love to give 5 stars, but the WiFi and service issues didn't measure up to that level. But in all, a truly lovely stay.

We hadn't eaten for many hours and were so hoping to find something to eat somewhere. The town felt deserted this day (spring time), and the train station cafe (Café de la gare) was closed for renovations (the sign on the door said it would re-open this very day, but that was not the case). A pizzeria in town was also closed this day, as was the market. There seemed to be no other businesses at all in town, and we were on foot, tramping around with our rolling luggage. We saw Le Mirasol and a sandwich board announcing Plat du jour. It looked like no one was there, and we knew we were on the tail-end of the lunch hour in France... but we were desperate. We pulled at the door, fingers crossed. Our French is rusty, but we tried our best and gathered from the woman there that lunch was unfortunately over. Ok. But we saw the rows of bottles. Could we at least order a beer. Well, this was early days with their business and licenses... we had to eat food with beer, but lunch was over, so.... Well, could we at least have a coffee or tea or juice - YES. We sat down and struggled some more to communicate. We finally understood that the chef was gone, so nothing could be prepared from the menu. BUT the daily "Plat du jour" was still available... would we settle for that? YES, YES, YES!!! Of course! We couldn't wait! Well... out of the kitchen she delivered to use the HUGEST, MOST DELICIOUS plates of boeuf bourgignon you've ever seen in your life. And then she came out with the "leftovers" of the duck-fat French fries... you know, if you want these old things. They were the most decadent, lscious potatoes! We were DELIGHTED!! We ordered beer twice (now that we had food and it was allowed) and slugged it back, so relieved to be having a meal in our very long travel day, only partially over. This hotel was brand new at that point (this was in spring 2018). I've been meaning to write this review for some time. We hope they are doing well! I've always wanted to thank our hostess for her incredible hospitality that day. We needed it! AND CHECK OUT THAT VIEW!!!
