I thought I had found the best takeaway in Ayr the last time I visited this place…read more Wow - was I wrong. Don't misunderstand me. The Lucky Star is a stunning Fish and Chips takeaway but the Eighty 8 is dishing out a level of quality I have not seen for a while. The Lucky Star is also a mighty trek from the city centre and I had to catch a train. First off a disclaimer. I found this place after being at the Ayrshire Whisky Festival. So, was I slightly pissed? Oh Yes. But despite this, I will share my opinion. I am a pain in the butt when it comes to Chinese Food. I like particular dishes. Always have. I always order Singapore Rice Vermicelli. It is really a melange of cuisine with Rice Noodles, Curry, Seafood, CharSui Pork and Chinese Vegetables. Most places cannot make it. They screw it up. Noodles are too thick, the pork is wrong, they mess up the spices, etc etc. The Eighty 8 pulled it off perfectly. Great heat, enough curry, great mix of ingredients. Wow. Too bad it is in bloody Ayr or I would be back - a lot. So, get yourself down here. I would phone ahead or you will have a 30 minute wait ahead of you. The fact that they takes longer usually means the staff uses fresher ingredients. I am always suspicious of places that can churn out a dish in under 4 minutes. It makes me think that some corners are cut and some things are pre-made and microwaved. The dishes from the Eighty 8 hit a bar that I have not seen reached for a very long time. Congrats.

Yo Yo Noodle is really appealing to me but somehow I've only just got around to visiting. I kind of…read morewish I hadn't waited so long to try it, now that I have a better idea of what's available I'm likely to go back again and again. So first of all, they don't exclusively sell noodles. They have burgers and other grilled goodies as well as filled pitas and wraps. However, on this occasion I wanted noodles. They have plenty of options on the menu and you can choose one of their suggestions or you can make up your own custom noodle box by choose which noodle or rice you want, with which meat (or veggie option) and which sauce. I decided to get udon noodles with duck and thai sauce. Everything is made to order and I guess I waited around 10 minutes for everything to cook. The food was tasty and very satisfying, if a tiny bit salty, but could probably have done with some extra veggies - I'll ask for some the next time I order. I like the option to customise your food so widely but I suspect I'm a bit of an ameteur when it comes to working out what will taste best. I think I need to work my way through a bit more of the suggested menu items and then try again.

From noodles to burgers to wraps to burgers! I had the tasty Tokyo Classic (which I didn't realise had chicken! Eek!) and it was amazing. Really well cooked noodles and teriyaki. It's very clean and tidy- the 4 stars is because the food was a little slow.

Ooh, haven't been there in donkeys years, says I; because I work in Edinburgh these days, I don't get a chance to nip into my old fave Glesga munchy eaty places, so this idea was pretty sweet. Since the last time I was here (aaaages!), the decor on the walls hasn't changed one iota, but the seating has improved, with a couple of big round tables in the middle: great for groups. The food is just as cheap and just as good as it always was. The portions are more than ample, and served fairly promptly by the friendly staff. Considering how many Chinese food places there are in the city centre, it's great to find one that is still cheap *and* good! Ideally placed near the Charing X end of the main shoppy bit of Sauchiehall Street, it's brilliant for grabbing lunch while at work or doing some weekend shopping, or nipping in for a quick meal before or after a sesh or gig nearby. It's not the greatest rice and noodles you'll ever eat, but usually, under the circumstances, it hits the spot. Quite greasy but the prices are reasonable and it's basically a sit-in version of every other take-away in the Charing Cross area. It's within stumbling distance of Garage, ABC, and more, which makes it absolutely perfect! One thing, though: I wouldn't use the loos if I were you, even if you are absolutely desperate.
