The only word to describe my hair is butchered. I initially had an appointment two weeks ago with Jenelle. I got home to find butchered, uneven ends with not one layer that I asked for. So a thick, uneven haircut. I called back and said my hair looked terrible and was not remotely what I asked for. I was offered another chance with Jackie who I was told was an educator and returned to have it redone. Well, somehow it's worse. Still the ends are uneven and look like someone took kitchen scissors to them. After the second time around there is some sort of uneven face frame situation involving a piece of hair that had to be mistakenly chopped- that is the only way to describe it. So after almost $100 including the initial $65 haircut and gratuity for both people as well as taking the time out of an incredibly busy schedule to get a trim twice I am literally embarrassed to wear my hair down. read more

When Hot Mess first opened I wanted it to be my go to place, but no one answered the phone and they were very limited on nail appointments. Now, all that has changed. Appointments are easy to make, the front desk is run efficiently and pleasantly, and the services are great. I have had my hair and makeup done there and always prefer to get my manicures there. The place is like a spa, very zen. You are offered coffee or water always and if you need to wait, there is a wonderful shop housed within Hot Mess, that sells clothes and cute items. the girl that did my hair was very nice .. but I didn't like how I was there for 5 in a half hours . My nails were white and I told her that some dye got on it & she told me that it would come out when I washed my hands and it only got worse & I won't be returning back . Bottom line: Hot Mess seemed to be just that when trying to get services scheduled and have them stay set. The dependability was not there even though the first visit was a good one and I liked the pedicure, the person that did it was great (but unfortunately left HM after that). Until the dependability is there, I'd have to say 2 stars. The Deets: You know what, I really wanted to pull for Hot Mess to be a great find along Asbury Park's Cookman Ave area. They have a nice concept with hair salon, spa services, and even clothing/accessories in a one-stop-shop type of environment that is appealing to the eye. As we were looking for a new go-to for pedicures (yes, real men take care of their feet) in the area, we booked here and honestly had a good visit the initial experience. The person taking care of us did a good job, was very positive, and we were excited to return. However in scheduling future visits and actually getting to use their service again is where the experience went less than optimal. We scheduled pedicures again for the next weekend we would be in and then got a call a few days before that Saturday appointment that we would have to be moved to Sunday, and more over our person we had the first visit was no longer with them...disappointing to hear that but we were good to be moved to the next day regardless. Then, another call came cancelling that Sunday visit as the person doing pedicures was sick that day. Well, really wanting to give HM another chance we booked again for another Saturday in the future...and yet again we got another call from HM later on cancelling that appointment as well. No matter how nice the place appears or how that first visit went, there needs to be dependability that we just were not getting. Being that we are in Asbury Park on the weekends, it's important to know we can schedule service and it be depended on. In that disappointment I have to go with a 2 star review of Hot Mess, unfortunately I've experienced better. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I found this salon after doing a quick google & yelp search for a new spot to try. The reviews seemed great from first glance and I thought the salon looked very clean & stylish from the photos. I called to see if they had any appointments for a haircut later that day and they did. They slotted me in for a time later that afternoon. When checking in, they found my appointment right away and told me to go have a seat in the waiting area in the back. (There was coffee, champagne, and waters near the seating area but I wasn't offered any). Once the stylist was ready for me, she said "Just a bang trim today right?". When I nervously said no - a full haircut, she seemed shocked. She ran up to the front to talk to the receptionist and left me waiting for about 5 minutes. When she returned she said she wouldnt be able to take me for about an hour. I said I could wait 30 minutes and so she replied "she'd rush". They did some deep conditioner on me and put me under a dryer to keep me busy. About 45 minutes later I finally received my haircut and was given to another stylist to finish the blowout. The cut & blowout itself was alright, but the incompetency of the appointment issue and customer service was unacceptable. I was also offered no discount or compensation for their error and my waste of time. Also, when i asked for change of a $20 to tip the stylist, i was told they have no change and have no ATM. What?! Overall - pretty bad experience and will not be returning. read more

I had requested the same blonde highlights I had in my hair , but had grown. They were an ash blonde . Unfortunately, the highlights came out copper for the price tag of 300 , it is too expensive for mediocre results. Cute place and friendly people, however, I used to get my hair done in the city with a phenomenal girl that does hair for Warped Tour and it was cheaper than this place. Most money I've ever paid for a cut and color and the least I've ever liked it. Color wasn't exactly what I asked for and it faded quickly leaving some bleached stripes (why she bleached pieces I have no idea). When I asked about correcting it I was told to just make another appointment. Wasn't about to pay even more money to fix a job not so well done. Time to keep searching for a new salon or will be sucking it up and going into the city every time I need a cut. read more

When you're having a morning wedding, you've resigned to wake up at 5:30 to get ready. I needed to have 2 hair stylists to do myself and my 4 bridesmaids but 3 weeks before my wedding, one of them canceled on me! I searched the web, but 3 weeks before a Saturday wedding in June it's hard to find a great wedding stylist! Thankfully, the girls at Hot Mess Studio were available. Tara and TJ arrived at 7:00 am and worked hard to get three of my bridesmaids looking perfect by 8:45 and they did an amazing job. They were on time and worked independently so I could deal with everything else that needed my attention that morning. My girls loved their hair! a Winner! These ladies really know their stuff. I have been going to owner Tara Weldon exclusively for over 10 years. She has taken my dark blonde hair to jet,auburn, platinum and all shades in between and back. It always looks natural and lush and I have almost (almost) gotten used to all of the compliments I receive thanks to her. But I am never complimented on my great hair, just on how great I look. And that is the way it should be. Also, her cuts grow out beautifully. She trained personally with the late great Johh Sahag ( not a lot of people can claim those rights) and does a beautiful dry cut. Ooh, and don't forget Marcie for your paws and hooves. Cassie is a LIFE SAVER. I literally walked into the salon a hot mess (I had used some cvs bought hair dye and then quickly realized my mistake and tried to strip the color from my hair leaving me with a head full of green damaged hair) and within an hour or so Cassie had restored my hair's shine and color corrected it so well it looked as though I had never dyed it in the first place. Hot Mess was a great experience! I walked in today with no appointment to get a cut (I was cutting my long hair to donate). I was offered a beverage and after a few minutes I sat down with my new favorite stylist, Emily. She did a great job listening to what I wanted and styling my hair, I love it! When I went to pay for the cut, Max said that because I'm donating my hair I got a free manicure! I came back later that day for the manicure and Jen did my nails. She did a great job while being friendly and the nail area was nice and clean. They are also knowledgeable about which products are vegan. I was just expecting to cut my hair and go on with my day but the experience was so great I have a new favorite salon and a new favorite hair stylist and manicurist(or pedi) so I felt compelled to leave my first Yelp review about it. read more

I have been looking around the area for a good, reliable salon for about 3 years. Finally I found Tara at hot mess! She is the best! The studio is cute, stylish, and super friendly. After only one visit, Tara remembered my name and where I worked when I came back 3 months later. I went in looking to get highlights. She listened to everything I wanted and did a wonderful job. She was quick and professional but really sweet and talkative. She even had the receptionist run out and grab me a soda from a nearby deli, no cost to me. The highlights not only looked AMAZING but also grew in great and I didn't need to get them touched up for months. I never trust people to cut my very long hair but Tara gave me her advise, saying I should get a trim. I toolkit her suggestion and was really happy I did. She gave me the most adorable haircut.
