I found the people welcoming, I was there from 6:30-8 on a drizzling Tuesday. Tables about half full and filling up over the hour and a half I was there. The menu seemed really fresh and seems to change weekly (I don't read Czech, but google translate helped). I had a very properly cooked steak with mashed potatoes in a Jameson sauce. I wanted to buy all the chefs a beer because the steak was so good (and I'm from the Midwest of the USA. And the beer... Oh the beer was great. No English menus that I know of. I didn't ask. But the other options I remember were a single seafood ravioli, a starter of roasted apples with star-anise, risotto with prosecco and pecorino sauce, there was also a salmon filet, goulash w potato dumplings, slow cooked veal osso-bucco, and an ice cream dessert offering. Anyway, I say go. Get away from the places on the square and come here. I don't think they take credit cards... Not sure... I paid cash.

This restaurant is by the same owners as the Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant (PUOR Zlin) just a couple blocks away. Budvarka is an attempt at a more elevated menu and atmosphere as compared to the bar/pub model at PUOR. The food is good though always changing which is great for a new restaurant in development. The service is about the same as in PUOR but you're more focused on your food and drink anyway so just tip well if you're so inclined and enjoy your stay. Classics such as fried cheese and schnitzel were good and comforting. Beers are great and give a nice taste of variety as compared to the taps at PUOR. Dining area is absolutely beautiful with light hardwoods and a huge open viewing area of the beer room. Noise level can get a bit high as popularity grows but it's something you'd expect at a place like this. Businesses like this are sprouting up around Zlin to meet the needs and demands of the growing younger population who are learning that there is more out there to try, so I imagine Budvarka will continue to evolve over the coming months/years and I am curious to see the changes every time I fly in.

The restaurant itself has no obvious signage and is not visible from the main street. Once you are in front of the restaurant, you'd think (like I did) that it was a preschool or someone's house because it's just a wooden building with a tiny playhouse in front. You park in the one of seven spaces outside and walk into a very comfortably dining room with heaters on full. Tables in the middle of the room are small. Booths (fully separate by high partitions) along the walls are huge. I don't imagine this place ever getting busy so each visit, we've been able to grab a booth and eat in privacy. The menu is EXTENSIVE, with lunch being a truncated (but still generous) version of the dinner menu. Though this place specializes in pizza (very fresh ingredients, hand made dough), I was impressed by the ribeye steak which came from a young steer. The meat was flavorful and very tender. The color was deep and beautiful, something you'd pay $50+ for in America but here, you're looking at the teens. The overall quality of all the food we've had here (soup, salad, chicken, pizza, steak, potatoes, beer, bread, desserts) has been good every single time, and of all the places we've eaten at in the country, I will happily say that this tiny, nondescript restaurant in this tiny, nondescript town is on my "Must Eat" list when I land in the Czech Republic.
