The title of this bar is weird. It sounds like it was created by a group of children playing a game…read morewhich involved shouting out the first thing in their eye line. Granted, it is a cafe, it does have golf, it is a bar and it is in Leeds; but as I walked into the venue, I felt slight contempt for such a feeble name. The name is not everything however, which can only be a good thing in the case of Engelbert Humperdinck. When I looked around the place and read the literature provided; I realised that the venue was a bar and cafe downstairs, but upstairs there were three huge golf simulators. It stuck me as a bizarre concept for a bar that is so anonymously located in town. Situated in a newly regenerated part of Granary Wharf, I discovered it by accident and have never seen it advertised anywhere. The tables and chairs coordinate with the theme, the grooves of a golf ball are obvious throughout the decor. The menu consists of a selection of hot and cold sandwiches, something to snack on whilst using the simulators. It is not a place I would choose for the sole purpose of dining. My attention was drawn to 'Tigers' Beef Steak Sandwich. The mind boggles when thinking of what that snack would involve, considering his recent indiscretions. It's enough to make you lose your appetite. I visited the bar on a Friday afternoon, and the clientele seemed to be made up of groups of suit-clad business people, being allowed to begin their weekends in advance. I think that is the danger with Cafe Golf Bar Leeds, it could be a regular location for office outings, thus creating a slightly cringe worthy atmosphere. However, surrounded by contemporary apartment blocks, the bar does also attract a younger crowd during the evening. I just do not understand why this is an exciting activity. To me, it is as interesting and nonsensical as sitting on the arm of a sofa whilst whinnying, pretending I am on a horse. For golf enthusiasts who yearn for a spot of practice within the city centre however, this is ideal.

This is quite an awesome concept if your a golfer. You can play anytime one courses you couldn't…read moredream of playing. St Andrews is an example, has a driving range that tells you outstanding things about your swing. Example- how many degrees is your club face open or closed, how fast you swing, and if your a real nut like me how fast the ball comes off the tee! My father and law and I went by for a tutorial and the guy that helped us was super helpful. Prices are very nice as well with an hour going for 24 quid so if there is 2 of ya then it's 12 quid a piece. The more people that rent the simulator the cheaper it is. They have a full bar and a decent menu for a pub menu. They also have a smoking deck that's right on the river. So if your into golf or want some place new to watch soccer(haha) they have a game showing every night, I recommend this place.

Despite the club's youth, it has grown into a popular place for beginners and advanced players alike, with the challenging course and interesting views seemingly drawing the crowds - the club's entrance has a huge banner informing you that the place is 'the fastest growing golf facility in the north'. A round here will cost you upwards of between £20 and £25, putting it somewhere between the council courses such as Wike Ridge (£18) and the more upmarket courses such as Headingley (£40), and this reflects the standard of the course - rather middle of the road. The driving range, putting green and club house are both excellent additions to the main course, although somewhat overpriced (£3.50 for a bucket of 50 golf balls at the range). Overall, Cookridge is an enjoyable course, but does suffer from slightly infated prices - there are other courses where you get more value for money, and I would suggest Wike Ridge or Horsforth over Cookridge. However, if you do play Cookridge, I suggest using an iron on the 18th tee - or drive the green and go fishing for your ball.

Pay attention, that last hole is really tricky! I enjoyed the course and found it to be a great mid range course, not too pretentious, but not run down either. The club house was staffed by friendly attentive staff which I enjoyed, and the bar food was great! I'd golf here again, no problem!
