This makes no sense. I used to visit Grover weekly, so they made around $500/year from my visits. Since Covid, I've been three times, so they've made about $30 from my visits in the last five years. Making it harder to visit is extremely stupid and has turned off many locals who used to visit regularly. I'm in favor of keeping the reservation system, but the 48 hour cutoff is idiotic. The other major issue is the inconsistent opening hours and arbitrary closings. This has been true since before Covid. However, these days the phones NEVER work, so there's no way to know if they are actually open. Even if you have a reservation, I wouldn't trust them to be open. I've made that mistake more than once and wasted an hour and half in the car. Since they can't be bothered to fix their phones (this has been going on for YEARS) or get a cheap cell phone for the pool area, it's impossible to know if they are truly open. Buyer beware. Opening hours also suck from a soaking standpoint. Grover used to be open until 8pm, then it was 7pm, and now it's 5pm. Grover used to be a great place to stop for a soak after skiing, but now that's no longer possible because of the 5pm closing. Soaking in the summer is even worse. Who wants to soak in a hot spring mid-day in July? No one. In the summer you want an evening soak, when the sun has dipped behind the mountains, but nope! They're closed at 5. Stupid. Opening hours on Yelp are incorrect as well. I've submitted a correction. Per the State Park website, Grover is now only open Friday-Sunday. Of course no one who works for the park bothers to update this information. This place is so poorly run., On a positive note, the staff is always very nice and it's a beautiful spot.

However you can walk in if you park outside of the entrance in the metered parking. Or just ride the bus here. Bus is free at least until autumn of 2026 and they might even extend it again. The photo here shows October during a nice snowfall where Bodhi was standing at the border which is clearly marked on the road as you see in the photo between California / Nevada. Once you walk up the trail be sure to divert up to the scenic lookout a top a beautifully flat rock. that is where the other photo here was taken from in December 2025. I caught the sunset and ended up leaving the trail a little after most people might find comfortable. it had gotten dark indeed. on the NV side. The bathrooms on the California side are closed for the season. this sky this time of year can turn an incredible pink at the very end of the day after the sun has set in the west. It's magical it's notable that while they will sell you a ticket at heavenly to ride the gondola for $108 you can just walk up to this lookout and see almost exactly the same view. you could stay there as long as you want. Seems like a good deal to me. it gets your workout app impressed too

Angry about the price of the ride for my wife (equivalent to a full day ski pass), so we decided to go for a hike instead. Great decision. Gorgeous day, challenging hike but great trail. We did the Barn Trail to the Cal/Neva loop (not enough time to up to the waterfall). Way better than paying for the gondola with a 5 minute loop around a metal platform...Stayed at the Marriott so just walked out the back of the hotel. All day parking available for $10 via Venmo in the back of the shopping center across from the park entrance.

If you're looking for an alpine hike with meadows, lakes, wildflowers, snow capped peaks and…read morerushing streams, then a hike to Winnemuca Lake offers all of this within a 5-7 mile hiking excursion. Parking is located off Highway 88 at the Carson Information station (ranger staffed during certain hours) and costs $5. It's a small lot but there's overflow parking a few hundred yards up the road. Hiking to Winnemuca Lake and back is about 5 miles RT and it's a gentle elevation change uphill to most of the lake. Lots of rocks and roots so I bring my hiking poles for stability. During the summer (timing dependent on the snow pack of the previous winter) you're treated with a spectacular wildflower show en route to the lake. Once there, there are plenty of spots to relax and enjoy the view. I like to stop there for lunch and then push on up to Round Top Lake which is more strenuous (but short) 1 mile further up the trail. From there you will get to enjoy more sweeping views, rushing streams and a path that skirts part of the lake. Doing these two lakes as an out and back is about 7 miles but since I explored the meadows and lake shore at Round Top my tracker told me I did over 8 miles. It's a gorgeous hike that, while does get crowded, isn't overly packed-you can find some trail solitude. The PCT intersects the trail and there are hike in camp sites for those who want to extend their adventure. No water so be sure to bring enough. This is about 2 1/2 hours from the Bay Area depending on where you located but absolutely worth a day trip out!

Breathtaking is the best way to describe the scenery that you will encounter hiking along these trails. We started our hike at the Woods Lake trailhead passing Round Top Lake, Winnemucca Lake and ending up along the Carson Pass trail. It was mid-August, but the snow-capped mountains were just melting, so there were mountain streams everywhere and the wildflowers were in full bloom. The temperature was perfect in the mid-seventies. The skies were blue with puffs of wispy white clouds. This was a hiking experience that I will remember for a lifetime.
