    Serious granite carving
    PJ C.

Another great stop for those who like offbeat sites when traveling. This has to be one of the most unique cemeteries in the US. You have never seen more elaborately carved memorials than at this place. Given the local granite industry and history of Italian stone carvers it appears that everyone has tried to out do the others with their "headstones". This is worth a 30 minute stop to drive/ walk through to see the stone artistry.

This has to be the coolest cemetery ever, and that is coming from a girl from New Orleans (home of amazing graveyards). This cemetery dates back to 1895. Apparently, many Italian (and Scottish) stone cutters moved to Barre because of the large granite quarry. The tombstones are demonstrations of remarkable art. Several interesting pieces: the 8-9 foot tall string bass, the 4 foot across soccer ball, the 6 foot long race car, and my favorite--the kitty cat. There are portraits of the deceased carved in stone, Greek pillared structures, and lots of intricately carved Jesuses (Jesi?). If you are in Barre, you should really check out this beautiful cemetery. The artistry will take your breath away.

This is a beautiful cemetery. I live in the area and visit often to walk along the paths and admire the granite markers.

Everything has to be first somewhere and this first is in Barre (pronounced like "berry") next to the former railroad depot. It is only about 8 feet tall including the base. The monument has the Boy Scouts fleur-de-lis on one side. The north side reads, "In 1909, Barre stonecutter and Scottish Immigrant William Foster Milne founded America's first boy scout troop with materials shipped directly from Europe's fledgling Boy Scout movement." "In the basement of the Baptist Church, he taught us the meaning of citizenship, patriotism, moral conduct and the proper attitude toward others" (Governor Deane C. Davis)" On the south side, "In the mid-1800's the booming granite industry brought waves of immigrants to Barre from neighboring Canada and across Europe, making it one of the state's most diversely populated cities. The beauty of "Barre Grey" granite and the craftsmanship of the city's stoneworkers earned the city the title of "Granite Center of the World"" And on the east side, "Carlo Abate was born in Italy and immigrated to America in 1896. A talented stone artist, he founded the Barre Evening Drawing School in 1911 and taught everything from freehand drawing to monument drafting. A world-renowned sculptor, his contributions to Barre include the figures at the entrance to Hope Cemetery and the concept for this monument." The monument was erected in 2018. There is metered parking. Check the signs for enforcement times. [Review 1666 of 2024 - 154 in Vermont - 22689 overall]

Unbelievably disrespectful to my mourning mother who just lost her fiancé only three days ago…read more My mother has been inconsolable since the passing of her fiancé and had to leave abruptly after having a panic attack when arranging his services. This has been nothing short of a nightmare for her. We come in today, just ten minutes ago and they act as if it's an inconvenience to let her pick out the necklace for his ashes. Her phone is broken and she cannot call ahead and simply wanted to get this over with. Ed, was extremely cold and acted as if he had NO idea why she was so upset, looking at her as though she shouldn't be there?? You're open?? So yes we wanted to go inside and get this done?? He said with a cold and harsh tone, "after you just got up and just left yesterday." When helping her literally pick out where her dead fiancés ashes will go.... What is wrong with you? And then the lady in the office was singing and humming as she printed my mothers receipt. Are you kidding me? How absolutely disgusting and shameful. How dare any of you act this way in this business, guess it's just another dollar for you! I'm so disgusted with the way this short interaction just went and I truly hope no one else experiences this watching their mother be treated so coldly as her entire world is crashing down around her. Do better.
