Their staff are friendly and knowledgeable and are more than likely to crack a good humoured joke or two. They don't have a website because they just have too many varieties of things to list. To give you a picture they stock 11 types of florescent tube and 80 different types of light-bulb. This isn't spatially a huge shop, but they manage to fit a massive amount in...In fact their stock is so extensive that it spills out onto the street, tin baths, bonfire bins, compost and more are stacked by and even hung up on the wall outside. ...Oh and they are extremely reasonably priced. I don't think I will, but if I do I'll come here. Twenty odd quid sounds like a good deal. But in the short-term I won't be partaking. Another big signifier is the sign above the counter which explains that this is where the VAT gets added. Most shops open to the public rather than trade will go to the trouble of putting the full price on the sticker. Not here. Croft Street Warehouse is a strange kind of place. The shop stretches back further than you think. It's eerily quiet. You can get party plates and shower fixtures. Hand wash and sanding equipment. Tomato plant feed and more rawl plugs that you'd ever need. I get the impression that they'll stock Christmas decorations, but in industrial quantities or the kind you find attached to white vans. This is the place to come if you need manly things... or a cheap toilet.

It used to be Cobwood Bros. hardware store for as long as anyone can remember, but the one way system coupled with the recession saw it close its doors for the last time this year. This is a huge loss to Clifton Street as well as the owners. The Second Hand Shop doesn't actually have a name, but this is what the locals are calling it, and so I guess it will stick. It is likely that discount and second hand stores are the only types of business that will survive on this strangulated street since the councils decision to implement a questionable one way system in the area. The cafes and takeaways will also survive, but the level of trade that they will lose over time will mean that there are mean pickings from here on in... it's a sorry state of affairs! Although I rue the loss of Cobwood Bros. I have to admit to really liking The Second Hand Shop. It is full of my kind of tat, ranging from white goods to furniture and bric-a-brac.

I was trying to put up some blinds in my bedroom, but needed to cut them to size . Being a bit helpless in these matters, I ended up going over the road to this place for a saw of some kind. The guy in the shop was lovely, and when I told him what I was attempting to do he offered to cut it to size for me - so off I went back to my flat to get the blinds, which he then sorted out for me. Talk about customer service! I'd highly recommend this little independent shop over the bigger chains such as B&Q, where the staff are often elusive, dismissive and indifferent. Here you get a personal service with a genuine smile!

Joshua's…read more This is one of the vanishing breed of ironmongers Even the word 'Ironmonger' Is slowly falling into disuse due to the advent of the DIY supermarket Joshua's has however has retained most of the advantages of the small shop There is always a helpful lady or gentleman behind the counter who really know their business. For example I have a hand stapler that uses Non standard size staples. I was not able to obtain these in either of the Main DIY supermarkets (when I was able to find someone to help.) They recommended that I purchased a new stapler as this particular size of staple was no longer manufactured . As a last resort I tried Joshua's and sure enough the gentleman behind the counter produced the necessary staples in about 30 seconds flat. This illustrates the value of the traditional Ironmongers, who really know their trade and of which Joshua's in a prime example. For small items which the DIY supermarkets are not always stocked its a good bet that Joshua's will rather have them or will order them for you. Take a can along and they will fill it with paraffin in the quantity you want rather than having to buy a gallon( which you don't want) in the DIY Supermarkets. .It is difficult to imagine any ironmongery item which Joshua's do not stock .If you find it difficult to describe then Joshua's will let you wonder though the shop looking at the items on the shelves. Many items are priced cheaper than the supermarkets. The only down side is that there is no car park and you have to park on the street although I have never found any difficulty. If after shopping you are in need of refreshment then the ' Otley' is close at hand !

But the person behind the counter figured it out when supplied with a description of said lamp, and lo and behold! they were right. Imagine is B&Q or Wickes shrank down and got a heart.
