Living near the Brock Environmental Center at Pleasure House Point, I was intrigued by a story on…read morethe noon local news regarding a similar center in Norfolk. I had absolutely no idea that the Elizabeth River Project had an Environmental Center, the Pru & Louis Ryan Resilience Lab. But I was determined to visit. My research showed that it was located on an estuary of the Elizabeth River, tucked back in the far western section of Colley Avenue. In Ghent for another event yesterday, I determined that it was the perfect time to explore the center. My GPS was necessary to locate the building, which I assumed would be hidden in an area off Colley. We passed the spot where my GPS indicated the location should be without locating any turn. After turning around & returning, I looked closer at the spot & there it was, flush with the sidewalk facing Colley Avenue. We turned into the beautiful multistory building with a small parking area and a handicapped space right at the entrance. The building had the look of a well funded Environmental Center. I was delighted to walk in, passing rain barrels & a green living wall planted with native vines. We were greeted by a friendly employee or volunteer with another seated behind a receptionist desk. Near the door was a display of items for sale or donation which included a cute stuffy, She indicated it was a River Otter & that they came up to the center now because the water had become clean. We were told there wasn't a tour at the time, She welcomed us to explore the green center to learn about their efforts to restore living shorelines. Our coastal region is at risk of flooding and losing its wetlands & shorelines in coming years. So their work is very important. Being environmentally conscious I really enjoyed our walking tour, which included so much in a compact location. The green systems in the center are explained in signage with a QR code to scan, giving you an explanation of how to replicate & the cost. The center & its grounds include living shorelines, rock barriers for buffering & oyster habitants, marsh grasses for tidal flooding, salt tolerant trees, bushes & flowers. There's a Research Dock, Learning Park, Public Kayak Launch, Outside Artwork and much more. A level up you see the green roof with sod, solar panels, sustainable deck wood & furniture overlooking a beautiful view of Knitting Mill Creek. Underneath the building you'll find even more, including a community composting area. Through the Ryan Resilience Lab, the Elizabeth River Project provides a great example of what each of us can do to protect our beautiful coastal region which is so threatened by tidal flooding & sea level rise. I am very impressed with what they've done in the small space it occupies. The River Otters have returned because the water is cleaner. They've shown us how we all can do better.

We got a date scheduled, then he texted and asked to reschedule because an employee got into an accident, damaging the work car. He sent pictures of the accident. No problem. Deion was the one who came to do the estimate a few days later, arriving in what appeared to be a personally owned truck with monster tires and no company logo. He was at the house for approximately 5 mins, snapped a few pics, and didn't have any tools. I received an estimate that was 3x more than another company which didn't thoroughly list out how that number was achieved. I declined the service and he was professional in his response.

He thoroughly looked over the house and pointed out concerns I had not considered such as the lack of gutters on the roof, tree limbs too close to the house, and roots that may cause problems eventually with the foundation and the sewer lines.
