The unit was very cozy with a large master bedroom with a king size bed, a fully equipped kitchen, a nice living room, seating area and a very pleasant patio overlooking the lake and the swimming pool. There was a large bathroom with a shower and a beautiful whirlpool bath. It had all the comforts of home. The staff was very friendly. We were served a complementary breakfast brought to our door every day with our choice of menu items. We had a wonderful stay and would like to come back here again the next time we come to Door County.

It was more than I generally pay for lodging, but I found that it is well worth the price. One issue that could be corrected. The floor of the shower is contiguous with the floor of the bathroom in suite 11.. There is noting to keep the water in the shower. We made it work by soaking up the errant water, but the design is flawed.

My dates were not flexible so I wanted to insure that we had a good place to stay. This had a great location and the Maple cottage appeared to have just what we were looking for. Unfortunately, in January I got an email from the property manager that the owners decided to use the place during the time that we had reserved. They did not disclose this to me at the time of the original rental. The only thing that was said was that they were holding my credit card information and I would be billed 1/2 in January and the remainder due just prior to arrival. Now we are having quite a bit of difficulty finding a rental for that same week. Had I known that this was more of a "maybe" than a reservation I would have booked something else. Just be aware if you try to book these properties in the summer or fall for the following summer, that you may lose your reservation to the owners' personal use.

The decor throughout the house is gorgeous and every room is very unique, so there's a nice variety to pick from all of the photos when booking online. We had the Jessie and it was such a treat having both a fireplace and jacuzzi in the room! The staff were lovely and fun to chat with, as well as hear more home history. The food was fresh and delicious-there was no doubt about who was making it because it was done in the same room. The Inn is right in the bustle of town so its easy to walk for shopping, different restaurants, going to the water (etc) but you never hear any noise inside of our room. Thorpe House is reasonably priced if you're celebrating something like we were. It was like stepping back in time but nothing felt dated. They fill up really quickly so get a room booked as soon as you know when your trip is! We will absolutely come back the next time we're in the area!

Our stay at Thorp House Inn & Cottages was nothing short of miserable. The room was freezing…read morebecause the bathroom heater didn't work in the middle of winter, which made the entire space uncomfortable from the moment we arrived. The jacuzzi tub -- one of the reasons we booked -- was filthy, clearly not cleaned properly before our stay. We also paid for a horse‑drawn carriage ride, which was canceled due to weather. That part was understandable. What wasn't understandable was the complete lack of communication about the replacement trolley ride being one‑way only. We were dropped off and left to walk back to the B&B in bitter cold temperatures with no warning. Breakfast was another disappointment. What was served tasted reheated and stale, like it had been sitting around far too long. And the truffles we ordered -- which should have been a special touch -- were stored in the laundry room and all tasted like detergent. For the price and reputation, we expected a warm, welcoming, and well‑run experience. Instead, we left cold, frustrated, and extremely let down. We won't be returning.

This is a little-known property in Door County, WI. The property includes 3 rental options. I will…read morebriefly touch on each of the 3 options. This review is primarily for the smallest cottage, the Firefly, built in 1948 by the owner's father and grandfather which my husband and I have stayed twice (2011, 2012). For those of you who haven't visited Door County, it is the "thumb" that juts out from the mitten-shaped state of Wisconsin. A peninsula, it's chock-full of nostalgia and quintessential locales that are down right Norman Rockwell. The Firefly cottages are situated just outside the largest city in Door County, Sturgeon Bay, WI. The property is on a very private lot with beach-side cottages in a quaint spot just north of one of the most picturesque lighthouses on the peninsula. It faces the lake side of Lake Michigan so the water is colder than the bay side and referred to as "the quiet side" of the peninsula. While it is perfect for a quiet getaway, it is not directly within walking or biking distance of shops or restaurants, unless you're an avid cyclist. We have stayed at this property 2 years in a row now, both times around the 4th of July. As I mentioned, this property includes three different rental options, so you will have other renters with you on the property however it still remains very private. The newest and most modern construction rental option and also the largest is called the hideaway (https://sites.google.com/site/fireflycottages3/the-hideaway-cottage). It sits the furthest back from the shore behind the firefly cottage and has more modern amenities. I have not stayed in this particular unit. It sits behind the firefly so may have more obstructed views of the lake but is bigger, more modern, and has a cool fire pit in the yard. The larger of the cabins, the Viking (https://sites.google.com/site/fireflycottages3/the-viking), is a quintessential summer family getaway. There is a big, open great room that includes living room, dining room, kitchen. It's very well maintained by its loving owner. The house also includes a bedroom and a lofted sleeping area with two double-beds. There is also a full bath with tub so it's great for families at all stages and of all sizes. I would recommend trying to rent the Viking if you have more than 2 adults or more than 3 people. The smallest of the cottages, the Firefly is just perfect for a small family, romantic getaway for a couple, or individual reflection retreat. We have had the most lovely time both times we have stayed here. There is literally no (AT&T) cell phone service so be prepared to be totally unplugged. Took me a day or two to get used to this and I totally recommend doing it. Hey, you only get away once or twice a year. The emails can wait. And if you really need access, you can go into "town." The Firefly cottage is basically a one-room cottage with a little porch on the front (see my pics!). There is a little kitchen that we found to have everything we needed. There is a queen size bed in the main room, and a small, non-working fireplace makes the place feel even more quaint. The front porch has a couch that pulls out into a bed. We brought along an extra camping mattress and put it on top of the pullout mattress the year the boys came along with us and they seemed to sleep very comfortable - and they are big teenage boys! The beach: sandy and beautiful. We spent many days just sunbathing or playing bocce ball along the beach. It is stunning! The only downside we found is that every few years the ale wife (minnow) die off. This results in a beach littered with dead fish (yuck). We still had a great time and just had to do a little tidying of the beach. There's no way to tell when this death of thousands of fish will occur so there's no point in trying to worry about it when you make your plans. The locals don't give it much of a thought. If you are a dog lover, this is a perfect spot for you. Irene allows pets and our dog had a stellar time chasing seagulls and snapdragons the entire weekend. Love. The Firefly is more suited for an individual or romantic retreat for a couple than for a family of 4 but could work for a small family if the children are small. The shower is small so swim and enjoy!!! (drafted July 2012)

We (Harv and Paige) found the Inn in the B&B section of DoorCounty.com. When we saw the photos on…read morethe Inn's Web site, we fell in love. We were lucky to find eight days in August available. We both have health issues; they were all handled easily and flexibly. We stayed in a restored 1902 Dutch farmhouse, filled with antiques, but renovated to current comfort standards. Few Dutch farmhouses can boast a playable grand piano and a wood-burning fireplace in the parlor! The nearby barn is now a gallery and art studio. Both are surrounded by ten acres of grass, gardens, and paths. Monarch butterflies munch milkweed in a garden. Paige saw a hummingbird feed at a flower near her head while she relaxed in the pergola. A gazebo gives refuge from the sun. The Inn is midway between Door County's "coasts," away from the bustle of the tourist towns, but a short drive from them. It's far enough from town lights to be a dark sky location, where we could lie on the grass one night to watch airplanes, satellites, and meteors. What a treat! Our hosts Ed and Frank are multi-talented, funny, helpful, flexible, and full of wonderful stories from their travels and Ed's painting trips and classes. With extensive culinary backgrounds and as long-time residents, their restaurant suggestions are exceptional. Frank designs and maintains the landscaping and provides extraordinary breakfasts. The artistically arranged fresh fruit cups are a delight. Frank works in ink, pencil, and ceramics. His antiques background shows in collections of cut glass and teddy bears -- a few such among many. Ed paints in watercolor, gives classes, teaches workshops in the U.S., Mexico and Europe, and has showings in the gallery. He's a visiting faculty member at the Kansas City Art Institute and has had work in many national shows. We each bought some of Ed's and Frank's work. The Inn serves adults only; no pets are allowed. There are three rooms, one with a private bath; the other two rooms share a bath. The shower is exhilarating; the beds are very comfortable. Rates in 2019 are $135 and $149 a night. The Inn is an oasis of calm amid Door County's somewhat hectic pace. After hearing Ed's and Frank's stories about visitors returning year after year, some from the Inn's beginnings, we were surprised to see only one two-year-old Yelp review. We now think it's a well-kept secret. If you found this jewel, you might not want to share it. We enthusiastically recommend the Inn at Windmill Farm. We've already booked for next year at the height of the Perseids meteor shower.

It is located fairly central in the Door County peninsula, allowing both easy access to most places one would want to visit, and the most amazing star filled skies only available when you are not near a town. Staying at the Inn, a most wonderful and lovingly prepared breakfast is included. Fresh fruit, home made waffles, perfectly crafted scrambled eggs! They will also adjust per your needs or requests. Rooms are quaint, with just enough farm house character to make them fun, while allowing a good night's sleep on very comfortable beds fitted with soft, freshly laundered sheets. The gardens are welcoming and comfortable. There is a patio with delicious grapes hanging from trellises, and flowers everywhere. Just the right amount of artwork is scattered around, but the focus is always on the growing beauty. Ed is also a watercolor artist who teaches classes in part of the restored barn. His paintings can be purchased, along with a wide variety of antiques or artwork in their shop. All of these elements of the farm form a cohesive experience. Each part compliments the other, and even staying only a long weekend, our souls were nourished.
