Gull Creek - RIP Mom. You did your best by having your legal docs. Gull Creek failed you and so did Atria Salisbury & Legacy House of Logan too.

We used the metrics below in making our decision. The first year of their residency, Gull Creek maintained the quality and standards that had prompted our decision. Resident satisfaction Resident occupancy Staff retention Staff morale Resident family satisfaction Deficiencies/Complaints No Deficiencies Severity of Deficiencies/Complaints Reputation in the community (reviews) Unfortunately in 2018, Gardant Management took the helm and the decline of Gull Creek began. It began with an appalling downgrade in food quality, which was repeatedly dismissed by the administrator and her superior at Gardant. Concerns voiced by residents and resident families were ignored for over a year. Gull Creek's administrator made no effort to improve the food quality, opting for a token resident food committee, scheduling meetings with resident families and food providers/chefs who had no authority to implement change while ordering take-out for herself and management staff. As resident family members, residents and staff displayed their dissatisfaction and disgust with the obvious cheapening of the food choices, abysmal snacks and uneatable produce the administrator stated at a meeting she no longer wanted to discuss dietary. Gardant meals remain processed proteins and overcooked vegetables. As many of our loved ones have medical issues that could include high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, our concern regarding sodium, sugar and additives prompted over 15 requests for nutritional content. These requests were ignored. An appalling and dangerous situation is excessive staff turn-over. From 2017-2020 there have been 3 Directors of Nursing, 3 Activity Directors, 3 Marketing Directors, 3 Administrators, 3 Maintenance Directors, 2 Delegating Nurses, 2 Kitchen Managers: average length in tenure 1.3 years. Currently there is a position posted for a delegating nurse. Adding to the chaotic and rushed resident care, management heads have been tasked with meal delivery, including nursing, taking time from their more pressing job requirements. Instituted by Etros, a recently retained consulting firm specializing in underperforming/failing senior living communities, remaining staff have had their hours cut. These cuts have led to remaining staff being overworked, having poor morale and further loss of employees. Understaffing has resulted in errors in medication administration. Medications administered 2-4 hours after prescribed times, timed diabetic blood tests that are to be administerd prior to meals adminstered after meals. Cut backs in housekeeping staff from 4 to 2 employees has led to dirty apartments and erratic laundry scheduling. Gull Creek had 0 deficiencies/complaints in 2017. From 5/5/2018- 2/24/2020, most under the tenure of Gardant and the current administrator, there have been 24 deficiencies/complaints. I've received redacted files from the state describing each report. While a very small portion are minor, many detail severe and disturbing errors: in medication dosage- giving one resident wrong medications, not administering medications, administering wrong doses, excessive amounts of falls resulting in broken bones, head injuries and a fatal subdural hematoma. Others detail sloppy or non-existent records and reports from nursing and management; involving critical information that impacts resident safety. At the last family council meeting in February, when asked if there were current deficiencies after the report of 5/5/2018, we were told by management there was one. I was forwarded a copy by the administrator of the report dated 1/21/2020. It was a somewhat minor issue with a med cart. On 1/21/2020, according to the state's records, there were seven additional write-ups for deficiencies. Below is a link to the state of MD site. https://mhcc.maryland.gov/consumerinfo/longtermcare/Assisted_Living/Users/FacilityProfile.aspx?FacId=23AL004 Gull Creek has sadly, lost residents, staff, services, amenities and it's reputation. Recent reviews on google, yelp, facebook and sites such as a place for mom, caring.com are scathinginly negative citing poor nursing, lack of compassion, bad food and bad value. One glimmer of positivity are the employees who really care for their residents and treat them like members of their own family. And an amazing member of the management team who is competent, kind and professional. However they can't right the helm of a sinking ship.

My mother was accepted into the Gull Creek Valeo memory care unit and was transported to Gull Creek…read moreby their medical staff, from a psychiatric hospital in Dover, DE. She had Alzheimer's with Behavioral Disturbance. Shockingly, Gull Creek, less than a month later, accepted newly-executed DPOA documents, via fax, from a local attorney. Gull Creek then told me, the original DPOA Agent, that "legal matters need to be sorted out in the appropriate setting". Management in Illinois wrote that on my Google review for Gull Creek. My mother had her legal documents prepared in 2007. Her valid DPOA was on file with Gull Creek, naming me as her Agent. My mother's estranged adult children came into town, lied to Gull Creek and absconded with my mother, taking her to Logan, Utah. I was prevented communication with my mother at Legacy House of Logan, with no legal basis, on the orders of my mother's estranged daughter, the new DPOA. My mother died on 12/27/19 of ARDS, aspiration pneumonia, Alzheimer's, COPD and Sepsis. I consider Gull Creek complicit in the early death of my mother. Gull Creek allowed individuals, unknown to them, to take my mother out of the secure memory care unit w/out prior authorization - there was a car accident that day too. They took my mom to the local attorney to change her POA documents. What good is having legal docs drawn up if they mean nothing, at a time when they should mean everything? Find someplace else for your loved one. Gull Creek is untrustworthy and dangerous. My mother had disowned her estranged adult children who ultimately took her....and she had removed them by name from her Last Will and Testament. Gull Creek failed my mother and she died 1,000 miles away - in Utah, where she had never lived, under the "care" of those she had disowned and wanted nothing to do with. And those disowned adult children are thick as thieves with her ex-husband who certainly then knew all about her private affairs after they stole her...which she NEVER wanted to have happen. SHAMEFUL.
