Pastor is constantly pointing us towards god & through reading scripture. The funny thing is each time I thank pastor for his guidance he always tells me to thank god & not him. I've never felt the spirit like I continually do at Shepherd of the Valley. Life is hard & the struggles are real everyday but spiritually I keep returning to this church to be refilled weekly and this has made my faith in god stronger . The church family is from all walks of life ( military, nurses, lawyers, teachers, musicians, counselors, artists, construction... those who have homes & those that may be in need of getting help to find a home) all are warm and inviting and you can feel they truly welcome anyone that walks through the doors. If you're reading this I hope you walk inside the church and feel as blessed as I feel each time I come through those doors. God loves you all... People build churches to help one another get closer to a personal relationship with Jesus; a church is a physical place that seeks to guide us toward heaven. "Cathedrals and churches architecturally prepare our souls for the beauty of the Eucharist." - Allen Hunt (Dynamic Catholic) When few people could read and write, Bible stories were told through stained glass windows (or painted walls, as in a church on the Hug Island in Hawaii). Classical churches are shaped in the form of the Cross, to remind us of Jesus' ultimate sacrifice for every single person who ever lived, is living, and who ever will live. A Catholic Church typically has front doors opening to the west, so as you enter you approach to the sunrise to the east, beyond the altar. Some Catholic Churches will have a labyrinth mid-way down the aisle, to help the faithful contemplate Mary's saying Yes to being the mother of God, and to Jesus' conception. St. Bernadette has much of this and is likely the best-lit and most uplifting church I have ever visited. St. Bernadette's is cruciform in shape. St. Bernadette's ceiling is curved and there are seven paintings of Mary, from her Assumption / saying "Yes" to Archangel Gabriel, to the birth and presentation of Jesus to Mary being at Jesus' Crucifixion. These paintings are amazing... the ceiling must be 25-30 feet up and each painting is clear as can be and Jesus glows... I don't see any lights specifically focused on Jesus in each image so it must be a combination of the paint and "divine inspiration" that makes the effect... Jesus is visually extending from the ceiling, pulling you to Him. You feel like you are present at each event in Jesus's life looking at each painting / scene. The same is true of the two paintings to the left and right of the altar, respectfully. The canopy above the altar has a curved top that glows golden, not unlike the sun, and the under side / the ceiling contains an image of the Holy Spirit, as a dove. Around the outside, in Latin, is written: Et verbum Caro factum est et habitat in nobis The sword became flesh and dwelt among us The ceiling above the altar has paintings of Mary and several saints / religious; the images of God the Father and God the Son are on the ceiling just be for the altar. When such a beautiful building is supported by priests, whose homilies being you closer to God, you have a holy church. Homilies this week noted: Saints Cyril and Methodius proclaimed the Gospel to Slavic lands and created an alphabet to help instruct people (Cyrillic, still used today); their goal was to help everyone they met hear the good news of the gospel. He gave us a copy of the book, "Faith Understood ". The church was beautiful. Elaborate frescoes and statues. A visit to the adoration chapel was inspiring w all the relics of Saints. I do not recommend this business. I live with PTSD from the role St Jerome's parish had on my life…read moreduring the years 1987-1992. Thinking about it is hugely triggering. My father is a seminary dropout who was heavily involved with this parish. From ages 11-14 he was my stepfather. After I was forced to convert to Catholicism at St Jeromes, he became my father. Or that's what my birth certificate says now. Both of my "parents" were youth group leaders at St Jeromes, and St Jeromes is what I ate from age 14-17. I was forced to do all of this against my will and here is what it tasted like: Sunday nights Teen Mass --Wednesday night Teen Life--awful weekend retreats --a two week leadership camp--where I could become a Jr Youth Leader or get grounded instead so I could be high schooler who "ministers" to middle schoolers--even though I had absolutely no interest in doing so but that is what I did Monday nights--Friday teen church dances On Saturdays, gatherings in the homes of other members of the parish--pot lucks, pool parties. I don't remember what night they had that weird candlelit parent prayer group called the "brotherhood" and the "sisterhood," which was especially horrible when it was at my house. I didn't have a lot of unstructured time that did not involve St Jeromes or people from St Jeromes. My access to outside friends from school was often restricted, mom's tactics were to schedule tutoring during my lunch time and prohibit me from speaking to friends from public school on the phone. I only made friends with a handful of St Jeromes teens that also had an inability to take it seriously. The other youth leaders would tell my parents right away if I tried to ditch youth group or behaving badly as in laughing inappropriately at the pentecostal aspects of the church such as the speaking in tongues and hand-waving, or the liturgical dancing. The foot washing part was just disgusting. When I was home with my family, most of the time I was being dealt harsh mental, emotional, and sometimes physical abuse in conjunction to St Jeromes. I was not a bad kid. I did not get in trouble in school. I had decent grades. I begged to not go to St Jeromes, and at 17 I ran away because I could not deal with it anymore, moved in with my boyfriends family in Northern California. My father ( the St Jerome's youth leader, not my biological one) paid for his other daughter and son's college. I was pregnant 3 months before I was 18. I ended up back at home, because my boyfriends family had different problems, the relationships was doomed anyhow. He was supposed to come back to Arizona but he died. I was ill-equipped for adulthood, ended up back with my parents and forced back to St Jeromes. I became a stripper for a while to get out of their house. They took my daughter when she was 2. She left their home at 18. She is 31 now and has had no desire to speak to her grandparents ever since. It made so much sense when years later I checked to see if St Jeromes had been caught in any scandals and I found out about Father Dale. See Phoenix New TImes article- Cross to Bear...My parents thought he was amazing, went to visit at St Tim's in Mesa. So traumatizing, believe me I wish I could get over it. If the damage didn't linger so heavily, I wouldn't be writing this review.

They have an active staff, excellent programs and everything seemed very organized. This parish is one of the closest parishes to my new home, so I may visit it more in the future. Everyone was very friendly, excited to be there and sweet. We had a visiting Priest say the Mass, Father Paul. Father gave an excellent homily (sermon) on the reading from the Gospel of St. John, (John 4:1-42), when Jesus Christ asked the Samaritan woman at the well for a drink of water. If you take a look at the Scripture, as Fr. Paul explained, you'll see four (4) things happening there: 1) At that time, only the outcasts went to the well at noon, this was because it was the hottest part of the day and nobody wanted to be out in it. The woman was most likely a prostitute. Jesus was waiting at the well for the outcasts and people nobody wanted to be around. 2) Jesus reached out first by asking for a drink of water. Jesus was Jewish and the woman was a Samaritan, at the time, the two peoples did NOT get along! The Samaritans worshiped on the mountain and the Jews in Jerusalem - BIG DIFFERENCE! The two peoples DID NOT MIX! 3) Jesus initiated the dialogue while He was alone with the unknown woman. That was completely unheard of in those days! Women and children were treated as second-class citizens; seen but not heard. This was a signal, of the equality to come, that Jesus Christ would initiate. This is one of the biggest reasons people leave other faiths/religions: the way good, faithful Christian men treat their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters. Women in many parts of the world, and in other religious traditions, aren't treated well or even near equal. Christians are different. 4) The Samaritan woman went into her town, told her people, and they followed her to the well to meet Jesus. After He spoke with them, and stayed with them for 2 days, they accepted Him as the Savior of the World! This was a signal! That the Kingdom of God, was to go way, way beyond the Jewish people and Israel! God's Kingdom was destined for believers to worship Him in spirit and truth! BIG CHANGE ON THE SCENE! Men and women are created as equal people in the eyes of God! Though our bodies are different, men and women are literally designed to fit together - in order to create life! Our Spiritual roles are different yet complimentary to each other. It all balances if you see the bigger picture. We are His plan! Dig it! At each Mass we read a passage from the Old Testament, the Psalms, a New Testament Letter and then a Gospel. It's the most Bible-packed event you'll attend outside of a conference or revival meeting! There's an incredible amount of young adults that go to their church which was awesome to see. The reason I give only 3 stars is because of the children's ministry. They were super friendly when I was dropping my 2nd grader off for the first time, but when I picked him up, I was bummed to see him sitting alone and no teachers around him. I was a bit late to get him, because I was talking, but I have served at many churches and no matter how late the parents are, the volunteers do not leave the children. He wasn't the last kid picked up and completely alone, but in the 2nd grade "area" it was just him with no adults. Also when we were walking out, the person I gave my tag too kind of ignored us and when I said thanks and goodbye, she just continued to talk to her friends that were nearby. So in a way I felt like people were kind and friendly, but not as welcoming as I hoped for a first time person. Wanting to try the church again and hopefully it will feel different next time.
