Who wouldn't want a pirate tote bag slung over their arm? Or retro bunny bookends in their house? If you just answered "me", stop reading now. But if you just got a little excited, then you need to plan a shopping adventure to Holy Kitsch. From fluorescent pink flamingos to brass anchor-shaped bottle openers, there are so many random and colourful goods filling the shelves I don't know where to look. Holy Kitsch was born when two pals decided to share their love of handmade collectables with the rest of us. And thank god they did. Where else would I find a sugar skull necklace or Frida Kahlo and Diego Calavera tote bag? The products are ethically sourced and fair trade where possible, so it's a totally guilt-free purchase. (Just don't tell your wallet.) The Surry Hills store of the same name is equally awesome, but you'll find this one just past the Enmore and King St intersection, opposite Oporto. It's a little shopfront, but heck is it bright!

Holy Kitsch! is so brightly coloured and exotic looking, that you just can't help but step in for a look around. Its appeal is magnetic, and for good reason! They sell everything that is, could be, or ever was, Mexican. They have everything from sugar skull necklaces, to colourful acapulco chairs, and they're all one-of-a-kind! Of course, everything is quite expensive, as it would be. The chair, for instance, if I remember correctly, costs about $500! It's just a simple chair! Nonetheless, it's extremely fun to look around here, and if I could spare the cash, I would definitely fork out for some of the more eye-catching items.

Ever seen those square, brightly coloured paper bunting they use in Mexico for day of the dead celebrations? Given we just had Halloween celebrations, they seem to be popping up at bars here and there - and Holy Kitsch is where you can buy them in Sydney for a decent price. I was so excited to find these in both plastic and paper versions for just $35 - they're called papel picado in Spanish - as otherwise you have to buy them online and pay for shipping fees. They stock a range of other latin-inspired knick knacks and homewares, like those vintage look Corona drinks trays, green shopping bags featuring Frida Kahlo's self portrait, decorative crucifixes, and framed quirky prints with weird messages like "I like boring things" emblazoned across. The shop manager was super friendly and knew a lot about all the goods they had on offer - I'll definitely be making a pit stop here if I ever host a Mexican themed party.

I nearly had a little conniption fit when I walked past this window. In a good way. There was a Frida Kahlo-as Day of the Dead skull print, a scattering of retablos, a Dali dripping clock and a sign requesting 'Young girls wanted for pickling and bottling, apply within.' Not being a frequenter of Surry Hills, I wasn't aware of the original Holy Kitsch! shop there, but was sure excited to find this just opened in Newtown. Advertising themselves as purveyors of 'Day of the Dead, Frida Kahlo, Old School Tattoo, Prints & Curios' and with an emphasis on Fair Trade, ethically sourced and the handmade, I suspect I'm going to haunt this place with disturbing regularity. With the Day of the Dead just around the corner (much better than the American gorge-on-lollies Halloween, the Mexican the Day of Dead is all about hanging out in the graveyard with the rellies, saying suck this Death, they're still part of the family) it's a perfect time to stock up. Sugar skull jewellery, milagros (small silver models body parts used as devotional items), funky furniture, they have it all. With a professional interest in Frida-as-fetish-object I had trouble containing my delight. Purge all Ikea nonsense and buy Mexican and vintage medical model homewares! Kindred spirits unite!

Whilst some of them may hint at practical purposes (like spaceship shaped ice trays), mainly they're just there to be fun. And fun they are. There is moustache themed paraphernalia aplenty at Popshop, with fingerstache tattoos, moustache chocolate lollypops, moustache straws and fuzzy stick on 'staches. A few of the other items that stood out on my last trip to Popshop included bobbly-head flamingoes, witty flipbooks, bacon flavoured toothpaste and many other things designed to lift the corners of your mouth, such as an audible fart book. I made the mistake of testing one of the buttons of said book, which was followed by an extremely awkward 10 seconds in which the book blurted out an extended and, might I say, varied fart. I then attempted to put as much distance as possible between me and the farting book (not an easy task in this tiny shop) whilst fellow shoppers avoided my eye contact. As I left the store, the man working in the shop picked up a handful of stock, setting off a chorus of squeaking rubber chickens and decapitated limbs. The man smiled to himself and I smiled too, knowing for certain that he had the best job in the world. Ever.

We had stumbled upon White Rabbit Gallery while trying to find things to do in Sydney. We stopped by White Rabbit Gallery on a Sat morning. We ended up doing the free tour (about 30 min long) once we arrived as staff had mentioned this to us when we arrived. Staff explained to us the gallery and the types of artwork that they had on display, noting that the exhibits change every few months. She took us around several artworks and told us about the story behind the works and the artists, which was pretty interesting. The art itself was pretty cool - quite unique. Each artist we saw had a statement and a story behind why they decided to create such works. We definitely enjoyed our time at White Rabbit Gallery and would highly recommend if it you are in Sydney!

Well, it is a cute red, white and pink monkey with pom poms and you squeeze his hand and he dances, now you want one too don't you? Octopus Designs has all kind of cool and unusual inventions like those awesome voodoo knife blocks where you stab the knives through a man, so you can vent frustration and keep your kitchen tidy, they have Nasty Note pads, if you have to take phone messages, you can add an aggressive touch (perfect for the office), they have really funky city magnet collections featuring the Eiffel Tower, The Leaning Tower of Pisa and a Windmill and they have bookends which are hands. They have less cool stuff, like mugs, heat bags and phone cases, but people want that stuff too, but the more useful items like The King of Disco washing up sponge are definitely more why you go to this shop.

Oscar and Friends obviously opt for quality over quantity, with their slightly smaller fiction section made up of a strong choice of new releases and classics. The kids selection is even smaller, but once again it is made up of a few choice picks, including my favourite, "Possum Magic".
