I recently had to connect service with Dalton Utilities due to a job transfer to the Dalton area. I…read moregrew up in the area and had returned for my job and divorce. When I sat down to connect service, I was told I would have to pay $390.00 DEPOSIT ( non refundable until you move out ,oh,by the way, a$25 move in fee and another $25 when you move out on top of the $390) with a 731 credit score ( upper 63%) and a bankruptcy (6 years old) due to my divorce. I was in shock!!! They also said it was due to multiple credit checks (resident check for new apartment, wireless check, moving truck, etc.) Things that should be expected with a move. I felt completely helpless and infuriated since I had already presented a letter of credit from my previous power provider (Georgia Power) stating I had no delinquent bills or non payment. I had used this company for 5-7 years with no deposit, no problems. Don't get me wrong, a reasonable deposit would have been expected and gladly paid but this was ridiculous! I have NO past due payments on ANY other accounts I have other than the divorce issue. You work hard, pay your bills and do everything you are suppose to do to be a productive person and a company, who knows they have you over a barrel, takes full advantage of you. There was no other service available for that area!! If there had been, believe me, they would have had my business !!! Absolutely criminal.....

However, they will not carry the bill for more than 10 days. if you're late on your bill, you have 10 days to pay before disconnect. To me, that is less than a payperiod. If i don't have $360 bucks to heat my trailer on Feb 13.. what makes them think I'll have it 10 days later? I'm sorry, but some of the folks around here live paycheck to 3-days--before-paycheck. If this company can't carry a late bill for longer than a week and a half, are they really the company we feel secure with having as our only provider? It seems like they are staring into the face of bankruptcy, if they can't wait til net 15 or net 30 before disconnecting. Furthermore, the fact that my power bill for January was 50% of my rent- there is something wrong. We need to get more eyes on this co-op. There seems to be some missing details to their balance sheet.

As a graduate student, I mostly use the library at the university, nonetheless, it's always the same experience here. I even called once & asked to have a book placed on hold and the librarian told me she could not because she was too busy!
