I took my 12 year old and very arthritic Australian Shepherd there for a chiropractic adjustment as highly recommended by my regular vet Piscataqua Animal Hospital. I got way more than just a simple adjustment. The care and commitment level are the best I've seen at any vet practice, and the office is bright and clean and cheery, and my dogs actually fall over themselves in their eagerness to get into the building. Dr. Downey focuses on the overall health of your pet, so she will take time to get a complete health history, will quiz you on diet and exercise, and will really take pains to get at the underlying issues. She is informative and knowledgeable, and really made me feel like I was a partner in my pet's diagnosis and treatment. My dogs were both diagnosed with Tick Borne Disease, and my girl developed an immune-related blood disease that almost killed her. Dr. Downey was the only vet who instinctively knew what was going on, confirmed her feelings with blood work and began treatment that saved my dog's life. I can't say enough good things about HAHC. Over the past couple of years, my cat went from 10 pounds to 3.5. :( I took her to several vets in the Metro Boston area, including 2 respected VCA clinics and a great vet in Brookline. Nothing the traditional vets did helped her. She was literally dying. Then a friend of mine at work recommended Holistic Animal Healing in Exeter. Being interested in holistic health, I was intrigued. But I thought, Is it insane to take my cat to a vet in New Hampshire? And moreover, Is it insane to take my cat to a vet who is going to do things like electrowave treatments (don't even ask) and acupuncture? The answer is yes, it is slightly crazy, but my cat is back up to 7+ pounds after only a couple of months with Holistic Animal. And it's cost me a lot less than I've spent at traditional vets. Plus, I can call the clinic any time and speak to any number of awesome people who are happy to give me advice between visits. They are great about sending me medicine and supplements in the mail so that I don't have to trek up there between visits. Dr. Downey is a holistic vet but also does traditional medicine if it is called for. For instance, my cat had a full blood workup and also took antibiotics at first. Dr. Downey cares so much about every pet, but also understands that we pet owners have budgetary and time constrains in our lives. Though holistic care has actually been much cheaper than regular veterinary care. The only downside is that it requires more regular visits until your pet gets healthy. After that, it's just maintenance with supplements and proper food, plus a visit 1-2 times a year. If you have any interest in holistic health and you have a pet who isn't responding to traditional medicine, Dr. Downey is the best vet in New England. Everywhere I go, people tell me this. She is very busy and can't always take new patients right away, unless you have a very sick pet. In that case, they will try to make an exception. For instance, when I called, they said they weren't taking new patients unless it was an emergency situation. I told them my cat was only 3.5 pounds and they saw me within a week. Absolutely no reason to go anywhere else. I've found a gem the day I first visited Dr Downey. Everyone is just wonderful....staff is in tune with animal behavior and approach as I have a rescue thats had a history of horrible abuse. She's a good 35 minute drive but very much worth it. She gives plenty of time during appointments and there isnt any need to speed talk as I have felt in the past with other vets with only 20 minutes to spew out a problem, exam and treatment...and if you're lucky to get a couple of questions in. She always has a full appointment card but wil make time for any problems that may pop up. Just what I was looking for.....natural treatment with conventional treatment when appropiate and she does NOT have Science Diet on display nor does she push it. She also supports Raw feeding which is few and far between....along with other natural diets. read more

We've been using Dr. Downey and her staff for about a year for our two dogs. It's a much longer drive for us than our old vet, but I have zero regrets about that. One dog is in the prime of his life, and easier, but even when he got a hot-spot and needed to be shoehorned into their schedule on no notice, it's no problem, they made it happen. The old dog needs more care and a gentle touch and she loves going to the vet now. I couldn't be happier with our choice, and the care our dogs get, and the silver lining is that these folks are actually a lot less expensive then their predecessor was. In 2010 I started preparing to move out of the country and was extremely nervous about having all the paperwork done correctly and preparing my extremely nervous dog for the journey. Dr. Downey and her staff did a stellar job of preparing the paperwork, preparing my dog and preparing me for the trip. I use Holistic animal healing for my dog and my horses. Both Dr Downey and her staff are caring and easy to communicate with. When my disabled son's dog and best friend had a second stroke and he knew it was time to say good bye, Dr Downey came down after her normal working hours to our farm. She took the time to explain everything to my son. We then all carried this sweet old dog out to the back deck and Regina let my son cradle his friend in his lap to say his last goodbyes. Very caring people. They are incredibly busy though, which in my opinion means great vet. So for normal veterinary care you do need to schedule well in advance. If you live in the area, this is the vet to go to. After reading the reviews here, I called and got on the wait list to get my two dogs seen. We were on the wait list for a while, but it was completely worth it. Dr. Downey is a total pro! In the last few months, both of my dogs have had to go to the vet for acute visits. Our other vet, who my dogs had been seeing for years, was fine but rather than treating the issues they were treating the symptoms. Much like telling the doctor you have a headache and them giving you pain meds, that's what the old vet was doing. Dr. Downey was able to not only identify the underlying cause, but to actually fix the problem! Each initial visit lasted about an hour which is insane! I've never spent more than 20 minutes having both my dogs checked and vaccinated/blood drawn. Every visit since then, while having a targeted objective, has still lasted at least 20 minutes. She takes the time to get to know the animals and try to understand them. Every question I have had has been answered thoroughly and thoughtfully and with regard to each dog (rather than a bottled answer). It's also worth noting that everybody in the office is lovely, very helpful and accommodating. This office also tends to run very close to schedule which seems to be relatively rare these days. I was very fortunate to get in to see Dr Downey shortly after I got my yellow lab puppy. She had had a neurological issue before I got her, at about 4 mos (either inner ear infection, bells palsey/stroke, or brain tumor according to the specialists that she was taken to). She was on two months of antibiotics as an inner ear infection treatment (start with the easiest treatment approach) and was not a thriving puppy when I took her in. The Dr was able to identify and address several issues: a lower jaw that was growing faster than the upper jaw, some remaining paralysis in her face (ear, eye and mouth on right side), some vitamins and homeopathic remedies. I am convinced she turned my puppies health completely around, over about 6 mos. My puppy ended up with full blown lyme disease at close to the same time and after more antibiotics she was put on a holistic treatment that took about 9 mos - but I got to see my puppy's energy come back and exceed what she had ever been. my three small dog breeds are 17 , 16,13 years of age I have been fortunate to find them great care with DR Downey sine they were 3-4-5 .... the Maltese had nearly died of IMHA caused by a toxic cocktail of multiple vac's given & should not have been given after 5000,oo to save life ... I called this clinic yesterday morning to make an appointment for my dog who had developed an ear infection the night before. When I called I said "I've never been here before, I'm new to the area but my dog developed an ear infection, can you get me in" and they told me they could not get a new patient in the same day but they could see my dog the following week.
