The view from our window of this snowy week

My family and I traveled, during the pandemic, to a funeral in Denver, CO. The pandemic wasn't the only major factor at play in our travels. A huge winter storm wiped out power and water in several states and impacted our travels on our way home from Denver. Long story short, our flights from Denver to Dallas were delayed and our flights from Dallas to Birmingham were completely cancelled. We stayed the night in a hotel in Dallas with no power or heat and began the drive home the next day since there was no hope of a flight for days. We ended up staying in Minden after a nerve-wracking day of driving over dangerous, ice packed roads. The service at the hotel was spectacular. A warm room and hot breakfast food was more than we could have asked for! Many businesses nearby didn't open and there were no restaurants open and grocery stores closed, too. The staff at this Holiday Inn Express went above and beyond, cooking not only breakfast for all of the stranded guests, but making dinner for us as well. A majority of the staff stayed on the property to care for their guests as the roads were too dangerous to travel. They treated us like family and learned our names before the end of our 3 night stay. It was almost bittersweet parting from this place. So many towels, fresh linens, and meals made - and we were safe and protected in this place. Thank you Minden Holiday Inn Express!

Holiday Inn Express, has had an update past couple of years, looks great. We took a mid week get away to visit Gibsland. This location was close for us. We booked online and went for the King size bed with a jacuzzi. Really pretty nice room and the jacuzzi, just cost a couple dollars more. The room has a kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave. The Keurig Coffee maker was perfect. Closet was nice size with a full sizer ironing board and iron. King size bed was very firm, while the big pillows were very comfy and soft. The over head adjustable reading lamps were a major plus, but you can feel the halogen lamp heat. Bathroom was laid out nicely, even had an adjustable magnifying makeup mirror. Room 206 is right above the pool. The pool was closed but was clean and ready for use. Check in was very simple and easy. The front desk even suggested a few local sites to take in during our visit. The Free Breakfast was a perfect way to start todays adventure. The hotel is right across the street from a couple of gas and convenience stores.

Solid HI Express. The rooms have always been super clean and the staff super nice. My only complaint is that the rates are ridiculously high for a HI Express. BUT, they're pretty much the only game in town if you want a room door that doesn't open out into a sketchy parking lot.

    King Bed....very comfy!

I wish I could copy and paste more stars to their rating, like all of the stars we saw in the sky…read morewhile we were there! Where do I start? Mr. Pat & Mrs. Kay are the owners and they are hands on at all times. They run the whole show, so you deal only with them and the interactions with them were always very pleasant! (When a business owner is dealing with customers, you usually get THE best treatment.) These 2 people are the kind that make you feel like you've known them forever. Booking our weekend was effortless. They took our information, and told us to call whenever we needed directions or help. They promised to turn on the air conditioner earlier in the day so that our cabin would be cool by the time we got there.(Spotless cabin, may I add. But more on that in a minute.) We ran into Memorial Day traffic and, therefore, ran very late. Never having met us, they told us they'd leave the key by the door to the cabin for us. Are you getting a sense of what kind of people they are? Upon turning onto the property, we felt a sort of serenity with the moonlight gently giving us a sneak peek at all of the natural beauty we would be surrounded by for the weekend. We were excited to see this beautiful piece of land in the morning sun! As we walked down the rustic wooden bridge that led to our cabin, we were treated to the delights of a country night; the still night air, the birds singing their greetings to us, the sound of the water trickling through the tiny creek, the steady rolling hum of the windmill, all accented by peaceful quietness. And the doves! Can you imagine having white doves flying around, always in pairs? On the front porch of the cabin were a rocking chair and a porch swing. How welcoming! The inside of the cabin was spotless and, as promised, cool. There were soft clean linens on the beds with nice, fluffy pillows. The bathroom had a variety of complimentary toiletries and fresh towels and rags. There was a heater nestled in front of a wall designed to outline a cozy fireplace. They even thought to put a game of Dominoes on the mantle! They went out of their way to add the little "homey" touches that really make a difference. We went to bed looking forward to relaxing in the sparkling pool the next day. (And we slept sooo good!) After a delicious breakfast of Strawberries Romanoff, French Toast with crispy bacon, orange juice and coffee, Mr. Pat told us some of the history of the house (there since 1902) and grounds, like Lindbergh having landed there in 1923, 4 years before he "crossed the pond." Mrs. Kay gave us a tour of the house (also their home) and shared more of its extensive, and quite interesting, history. Stepping into some of the rooms, we felt like we'd been transported back into time. For instance, entering the parlor gives you a sense of how life was back then. The décor and furnishings and timed pieces allowed you to feel like you were there when it was all brand new. The antiques and old pictures of the original family make you experience a personal connection with their past. Edgewood Plantation offers an excellent first and last impression! Whether you're in the Cabins or the Bed & Breakfast, it's a place where you can relax, with no chaos or responsibilities and feel at home while away from home. A retreat. Mr. Pat and Mrs. Kay work hard to make sure that Edgewood is not just a place to stay, but an experience!

We stayed at the Neal cabin - it was huge probably too big for a family of 4 but it felt like our home away from home. Loved the history of the Coulter family. The cabins have been beautifully renovated. If you looking to get away from the city, or take your kids to Crater of Diamonds park (40 minute drive). Enjoy the country but have modern commodities, this is amazing place to stay. Start the day with your hot coffee from the Keurig coffee machine, and hot breakfast delivered your door in the morning by your host Brad. Breath pure oxygen from all the trees surrounding the property. Hear the birds chirping, and get greeted by Penelope. Get online check in. This was on of our best experience on a bed and breakfast and we can't wait to come back.
