I work for the Fireside Theater about twice a year and this place is truly my home away from home. And that is possible thanks to Tammy, Wendi, Edna, and the rest of the staff that goes above and beyond to make us as comfortable as possible in our long stays. And this past time in particular they made it so easy for me to bring my little dog Scrappy. It is a pet friendly hotel and these ladies definitely helped welcome him and take care of him while I was in rehearsals. So thank you ladies for being so patient with Scrappy and always welcoming me back with warm smiles and fantastic service. See you next year!!

Love the handwritten note left by the staff. What a great welcoming touch.

Built in the 1860s and a stop on the Underground Railroad, the spacious, high-ceilinged HH exudes history and charm. Innkeeper and owner Gloria Buley greeted us warmly; I like to think I could see her smile through the surgical mask she was wearing. Our well-appointed room had a comfy king bed and a recently remodeled en suite. The wardrobe contained two plush bathrobes; a small table held bottles of Perrier, chocolates, fresh flowers, and two surgical masks. Like our room, the inn's common areas are immaculate and tastefully furnished with period antiques and Oriental rugs. Our two breakfasts were highlights! Gloria's a CIA culinary school grad and it shows. Fresh-squeezed OJ, omelettes, French toast, baked apples, sausages, Canadian bacon--whew, I don't eat nearly this well at home. Breakfast was also a chance to get to know Gloria. A recent transplant from Woodstock, NY, she purchased the Hamilton House weeks before the coronavirus shut down the world. I'd be down in the dumps, but Gloria seems indefatigable and is using the time to, among other things, install a garden walk that will pay homage to the nearby Birge Fountain, circa 1903. We're already looking forward to our next visit! A tip: One of Wisconsin's best supper clubs, the Duck Inn in Delavan, is a 15-minute drive from the HH.

This gorgeous 1861 mansion is exquisite, perfect down to the last detail. The multi-course breakfasts, created by innkeeper (and Culinary Institute-trained chef) Gloria, were off-the-charts delicious and kept my belly full til dinnertime, even after a day spent hiking the gorgeous Kettle Moraine. I slept deeply on the luxurious comfy bed, but I'd eat saltine crackers and sleep on a cot to hear Gloria's stories! Gloria has a talent for being present but never intrusive. She'll give you a house tour with fascinating tidbits (from John Belushi to the Underground Railroad!) but ask about her journey from Woodstock NY to Whitewater WI for a rollicking story with a happy ending!

There is a relaxing gazebo in the middle of the property that easily seats 15 people where you can gather to eat and visit. The pool and hot tub are very clean as well as my guest room. The reason I cannot give five stars is because things are somewhat outdated but clean and in good repair. A nice breakfast is offered every morning. To my surprise they even had a luggage cart which is essential for travelers and those who need assistance hauling their things. It is my understanding that this place has grown leaps and bounds from previous ownership and is continuing on its way upward. I plan to stay here abundantly over the next few months because everything I need is on point and for a reasonable price. It is half the rate of the Holiday Inn across town. I stayed there previously for 4 nights and I can't say I miss anything from there. Early check ins are also very accommodating which can be such an asset. I am planning future business stays. Keep up the good work at the Courtyard and I will see you next week!

I booked The Everson Room. The house is easy to find as it is right on the main road south of town. It was set far enough back though, so traffic noise was not a problem. Guest parking is in the rear of the house. The guest entrance is in the front. So you get to go for a short walk to get from one to the other. After ringing the doorbell, we were met at the front door by Terri, the innkeeper. She cheerfully got us checked in and gave a quick tour of the house. The house smelled of baking cookies. Sweet Autumn Inn is much smaller than some of the bed and breakfasts that I have stayed at, but let's just call it cozy. It felt very intimate, like I was visiting my mother's house. There are only 3 guest rooms, so it is not like the place was crawling with people. During my stay I only saw one other couple and that was at breakfast. The Everson room was lovely. It was tastefully decorated with just enough old fashioned charm to make you feel comfortable without feeling like you were in an old antique store. There was enough room to move around, but not a lot. The attached bathroom was clean, but basic. It didn't really match the character of the rest of the room. The bed was very comfortable and I slept wonderfully. The room came with its own window unit A/C and a ceiling fan so I was able to get the temperature to be just what I wanted. There was not a TV in the room. This was not a big deal to me, but some people need one. (There was a TV downstairs in a common room.) I didn't spend a lot of time in the house because we had plans to visit Tyranena Brewing. It turns out that when Terri is not running her wonderful B&B, she works part-time for Tyranena. She was very enthusiastic about the beer and gave us some tips before we headed out. Breakfast was served promptly at 9AM in the dining room. Terri had asked us the day before if we had any dietary restrictions or special requests. Since we are not picky eaters, we assured her that we would love whatever she served. Breakfast was delicious. There was a selection of juices and coffee. We started with some fresh berries and a dollop of honey yogurt. Then a hazelnut pastry, before jumping into the main course which was some kind of multilayer baked version of french toast with bits of ham in it. We ended our stay by chatting with Terri about beer, the house and Lake Mills in general. She was a very engaging host, which always makes a B&B stay even better. Overall, I would definitely recommend Sweet Autumn Inn and I know where I will be staying the next time I am in Lake Mills.

Our room was cozy with a fireplace and AC unit. I loved the decor and the access to a guest fridge (great to store medication or snacks). We got into town late and had trouble with the closed main road but Teri's help got us there easily, and she even gave us some late night dinner recommendations. Perfect short visit for a mini getaway. Hope to visit again soon.
