The Holiday Inn Express - Poblenou is a nice, newer hotel located in an up and coming part of Barcelona which is experiencing tremendous redevelopment. It's located about halfway between the beach and the main thoroughfare Avinguda Diagonal which are each just a short walk away. Additionally, the Llacuna metro stop is only about 2 blocks away and the Rambla Poblenou is only about a block away and offers many restaurants, a grocery store and some shopping. Some of the immediate neighborhood is still transitioning and you'll see plenty of graffiti, but we felt very safe walking through the area, even at night, and we didn't encounter any of the scammers and pick-pockets that infest so many of the city's landmarks.
We lucked out and got our room for 75€ per night, we felt it was a great deal, especially since breakfast was included. The breakfast buffet is basically what might be referred to as 'continental' and generally includes croissants, breads, sliced ham, salami and cheeses with some sweet rolls, yogurts, fruit, muesli and coffee and juices, etc. A tortilla Española was also available each day during our stay. Newby US visitors may be unused to these offerings, but it was a satisfying breakfast and just about everyone could find something they would enjoy. I would suggest getting to the dining room early as the buffet bar gets a bit hectic with all the guests and the servers coming and going, and though there are many tables, the room fills up quickly.
The rooms were reasonably attractive and modern. Note that the windows only open about 6 inches, and the A/C is a central system which is apparently only turned on later in April or possibly May, so if you tend to prefer cooler temps for sleeping or lounging, you might feel a bit stifled on warmer days in the early Spring.
The beds were fairly comfortable, but a bit firm, so if you prefer a softer mattress, you might toss and turn a bit.
One small disappointment was that CNN was the only English language station offered on the room TV, and after a long day of touring the city and practicing your Spanish and/or Catalan, a native English speaker might want to unwind and veg for a bit in the evening listening to something other than the news. But that was just a small thing.
Another plus for many US visitors and others is that an ice machine is available just off the main lobby.
The staff was very pleasant, efficient, helpful and every one we encountered seemed to be multi-lingual in Catalan, Spanish and English. read more
