Head into the office in the center of town, make a reservation, and show up the morning of the trip with your skis, lunch, and a sense of adventure. The Vallee Blanche was definitely a bucket list item for me, and I hit it on an absolutely fantastic day. It was a few days after a storm, so there was plenty of untracked powder up top and the actual day was a blue sky perfect day. The guides provide you with harnesses and beacons, and are there to guide you to past the dangers of skiing on a glacier. I was expecting a harder day, but the route was not nearly as tough as some of the on-piste routes in the lift served areas. Our group was about 8 strong, and we tackled the run in stages, heading off at a stagger and regrouping along the way. The views are magnificent, and you get the feeling of skiing in areas that beyond the reach of most people, even if a cable car took you to the top. The flats at the bottom can be tiring, and the climb out of the glacier for the train ride back to town was actually the hardest part of the day (thank you global warming).

This is one if the best nature preserves I have visited! Apart from the obviously gorgeous scenic…read moremountain views, you'll find all the animals happy and roaming. The area open to them is huge so you will have to carefully search for them in the trees and on the cliffs. Except the llamas. They're going to be well out in the open. I encourage you to hike around as much of the park as possible because each animal has a different territory and terrain they prefer. We hikes every trail and found every animal featured in their brochure. If you're visiting in summer (before September) you'll find a shuttle bus available. Otherwise drive yourself or hike up. You get a discount for hiking up with a secret code found on the trail. There are toilets in the park and a restaurant, too. Staff at the ticket gate does speak some English, and parking lots are available if you're driving in.

First time paragliding - booked with Absolute Chamonix and had a wonderful time. There are so many…read morecompanies offering paragliding in Chamonix it's not easy to choose. I contacted several with some questions and Absolute was the first one getting back to me and the most prompt and attentive on follow up. They confirmed the booking by email and gave clear directions on where and when to meet the instructor. Had I known it's so easy to do this I would have tried this long ago! The meeting point is at the base of the Plan Praz - Brevent gondola - 10-15 minutes walk from town center. You are supposed to get there a bit ahead of time to get the one way gondola ticket. My instructor Gerald showed up right on time and we went up the gondola together to the first stop (2000 meter point). Taking off was a breeze - there was much less running than I expected, pretty much just walking quickly a few steps towards the edge and we were in the air, there was no scary falling sensation many people talk about. We were in the air for about 20 minutes and Gerald took great videos and stills using a GoPro. It was so much fun and we also lucked out on the weather - sunny with clear visibility. Landing was super gentle and smooth - when I was told to put my feet down we'd already stopped on the ground (the landing location is also a few minutes walk from town center). Absolute Chamonix did a great job and I couldn't have had a better instructor than Gerald (who has had more than 20 years of paragliding experience and I felt totally safe throughout the flight). Will definitely go for a longer flight next time!
