Right on the western edge of town…read more(but in Hobart that's only 10 minutes walk away from the centre of town) you really can't miss the bright green building on Liverpool Street. Given the loud exterior, the interior is not quite what you'd expect. The common areas are warm and welcoming with plenty of overstuffed couches, booths and even hammocks and two (two!) fireplaces. It somehow manages to create the perfect hostel common area with lots of different spaces with quiet nooks and crannies where you can hide away with a book, and larger open spaces where you can meet some new friends. The rooms and bathrooms are aging but clean, but there definitely could have been more shower stalls and toilets for a hostel this size. I'd love some more hooks or a bench in the shower stalls, and more than one sink in the upstairs bathroom - prepare for toothbrushing dances when when the hostel is full!

There…read moreare several tiers of rooms, and I ended up in a larger one than I wanted, mainly because it was booked out well in advance. It's a decent size building, but quite popular. They have plenty of bathrooms, and despite Tasmania being chilly the heat and the blankets did the job fine. They're very low on security, but I think the selling point of the place is that they've tried to set up a culture. The owners are very present and took the time to shake my hand on entering, and one gets the sense that this is a place meant for adults who want to be there (whereas you can find some sketchy, fringe-y characters floating around Australia and New Zealand's various hostels). The worst that could be said of it is that people were noisy the last night I was there, but when you pay for cheap accommodation, that's a risk you take. I was happy to take the money I saved and put it towards other things.

Enjoy all the details and the atmosphere of this lovely place. Very good equipped kitchen, great dorms with best beds I ever had in a hostel (and I stayed in loads of hostels). Really unique and superb located just a 3 minutes walk to Salamanca market including a free car park. Montacute is one of the best 3 hostels I every stayed. :-)

I DID NOT stay here, but did look into it online before my visit to Hobart. One reason why I…read moredecided not to book here was due to my perceived idea of the distance to downtown. However, when we left Tassie, the Airporter Shuttle Depot is right across the street from Transit Backpackers. Around the corner are rental car agencies (I LOVED Rent For Less). Only a few blocks walk is the Elizabeth St. pedestrian shopping area and the waterfront is another few blocks. If you are looking for a Hobart hostel and the main concern is this location, forget what you perceive and try Transit Backpackers. I was wrong, because I found this hostel is conveniently located.

Funky pub style hotel…read more While shared bathrooms per floor (no en suite rooms), bathrooms were clean, bright and inviting. Showers were large with plenty of hot water. Rooms are basic, with mini fridge, hanging space and bed. Heaps of accessible power points. Fun 'public space' with bar and coffee machine. Amazingly central location, with pubs, restaurants and retail all close by. Salamanca a ten minute stroll, close to skybus stop 5. Def not a luxury hotel, but loved my stay!

Alabama Hotel is located so close to Woolworths, where I bought my snack supplies from. I parked my car at the 24 hr parking place which was about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. As I walked up the stairs at the hotel, I could see some hanging flamingos and a cafe. The reception desk was located inside the cafe area. Alamaba Hotel also has a balcony with some tables and chairs to hang out at. I was given a handmade soap and a towel, enough amenities for my two days stay. They also prepare free water at the corridor that I could bring to my room. The room was really cozy with a heater, fan, and a working desk. One of the most important things for me is the number of power points that a hotel room has. I comfortably charged my power bank, camera and phone at the same time! I was incredibly grateful for electricity and free Wi-Fi that they provided. The shared bathroom was spotless and most of the time I didn't have to share it with other people. Mind you, it was an off peak season when I was there. Alabama Hotel is an excellent place for staycation around Hobart area and provided a comfortable stay for a budget hotel. It's one of people's favorite places to stay when there's music or food festival in Tasmania. Just make sure to book in advance to secure your spot.
