But something piqued my interest when I heard of Community Thrift and Vintage. I knew this one would be different then the rest. Man was I right. One part social enterprise, one part thrift store, all parts awesome, this pretty little boutique is retail-with-a-conscious to the highest order. A firm believer that the "thrift" in "thrift store" should be observed, I was beyond relieved to walk into an unpretentious, well-curated, and cheap(!!) vintage shop. Adhering to my "no uglies" policy, this not-for-profit opts for natural fibres when choosing their wares, and has a strict no polyester rule (thankthelawd). With its reclaimed wood and exposed brick walls, its well-curated wares, and its social advocacy and support of the DTES, Community Thrift could easily upsell cool to the masses. But they don't. And I love them so much more for it.

I scored an authentic Coach wool scarf for $14 (Canadian dollars). It was in immaculate condition. I almost walked away with another scarf, but I had to control myself. I think if you're looking for a good selection of gently used unique scarves, this is the place to check out.

And as usual, they still play favourites with customers for no real reason and won't admit to it.... ‍ Also, lost count on how often the employees (usually the assistant manager), clearly don't have as much experience with customer service. I've seen worse but some is still really lacking. PS. Make sure you keep your eyes on your items. Had someone took something right from under me when I was looking at something for not even a 5 second. After I realized it, I tried to confront the guy myself but walked away after I realized he won't admit his wrong doing and might gotten the police involved if I continued. When I brought it up to security, they admitted they won't do anything about it. Granted, their safety is a priority but what is the point of having a security guard when you had an issue that is borderline theft and nobody will help you in this regards? This is the kind of store you guys are supporting here, folks.... Employees that might not want to right a wrong or help you if hits the fan unless if you're butt is injured and is a clear liability.

Today I was able to stop in after the West End Farmer's Market, and I was incredibly disappointed. The staff are rude, mean, and push their way past you to get through the store. They ignore you when you're clearly wanting to ask a question. The products look like all the cast-offs people couldn't get rid of at their garage sales, and are spilling off of shelves and racks. There's no organization, and everything smells musty and looks dirty. I'm a big thrift store shopper - 90% of what I own is second-hand. But I wouldn't go back here. Their prices might be cheap, but you can find much better selection and much better quality goods at any number of other places around town.

If you have time, you'll probably find a treasure in here. It can be a bit overwhelming though. The racks are crammed with goods. Nothing is priced, so look for the signs with general pricing or just ask one of the staff. Very good value can be found here, if you can get past the clutter.

Profits go towards a good cause so that's definitely a bonus compared to other for-profit thrift stores. There's also a free membership program where people can collect and redeem points. I've gotten brand name clothes for a few bucks here and brand name nice bags for $20-30. There's everything from clothes snd accessories, to household products and furniture. There are also gaming systems, instruments, books, baby items, beauty products and much more. They run rotating 50%+ off sales every day on different types of items Sometimes it'll be clothes, sometimes it's kitchen products, sometimes it's arts and craft items. They post the daily sales on their Instagram page so it's super convenient to look up what's on sale before going. I've also made a bunch of donations to the store - just drop off stuff in the bins behind the building during their collection hours.

I live in the DTES and I am on a very low budget but I have a decent SRO and I'm trying to decorate my space. So I came to UGM thrift store and totally found what I dreamed of making, large white floating shelves! 2 of them and they were marked for only $20! Which is already an amazing price. Plus I had a few other items that I wanted but some stuff didn't have prices so I was a little worried that I wouldn't have enough money for everything but the cashier guy gave me 50-80% off on everything! Even the shelves were now only $10! I almost started to tear up cause that was so nice of him!! This totally made my day and helped me out so much. I wanted to defend this poor shopping customer but I minded my own business, I went in today and was mistreated by the same woman. I asked to speak to someone else because she was treating me awful and she still was like nope I'm the only one and I did mention the way that she had treated other people in the past and she wouldn't let me buy my clothes. I'll never be returning and will be trying to find someone to speak to as this person is taking away the ability to shop at a decent price safely.
