The range of stock is extensive. There's many imported CDs and a complete A-Z of albums and DVDs. Of course, there'll always be something that's not in stock but if that's the case, then the staff are always on hand to attempt to order in anything your heart may desire.

I like HMV but this one has quite a claustrophobic effect to it. The whole shop is crammed packed and the ceiling and shelves being quite low giving you a bit of an Alice in Wonderland feeling where she grows. The music is also hideously loud and you find yourself shouting to your shopping partners. The stairs to the basement are also quite steep. Nevertheless, the staff are friednly and helpful and the product selection is large and plentiful and there are often cheap offers on. For newer released products the prices aren't always the cheapest. You can go the the till and get a student card which gives you 10% off. You just need your valid student id.

HMV in Newcastle is located in the intu Eldon Square Shopping Mall, in a form of "bridge" on the…read moremall, hence it comes from the name Blackett Bridge which is the sort of street name used to make it easier to locate the store, even though it isn't on a street and is inside the mall anyway. The staff around the store didn't seem overly friendly, and the product range I saw was basically average for a HMV store. Inside, the store once again was average, maybe slightly below that, it wasn't the nicest of stores, albeit it wasn't the worst either and hadn't yet received the modernisation which some stores, such as my local branch of HMV at the Manchester Arndale have received. Some of the pricing was competitive, albeit more expensive, in some cases considerably more expensive than online retail giant Amazon. The selection of games was also minimal. The store was quite large being over two floors but still the overall feel of the store and other aspects I have mentioned sadly mean I feel this store is only worthy of a low two star rating.

We were very surprised to find that small production folk was available. As a gift to a friend, we went in search of Maz O'Connor's latest, figuring there was no chance, and what do you know but there is was. Also several by the Unthanks and Richard Thompson. Our native guide was a little stunned. So check it out, to get a listen to the local sounds. It's within the city walls, so very convenient on a walking day out in York.

If you're looking for anything that could even vaguely be described as 'specialist', don't bother trying here. HMV have an online store with free delivery, where the prices are the same or sometimes cheaper than in-store- so unless you need a particular item today, order it online and save yourself hassle (and get a free padded envelope). This is where people who don't know how to use the internet will go to buy their latest X Factor spin-off CD. It will be absolutely jam-packed in December full of Christmas shoppers. If neither of those two things apply to you, I wouldn't bother.

Prices are typical of the huge high street stores. Often significantly more expensive for games than even GAME which is only four stores away from it. It has had a makeover recently that makes it look very similar to how it was before. One suspects that the makeover was their present for Zavvi's death just before Christmas but I am sure it was just a big coincidence. The CD collection here is roughly the same size as the HMV in Newcastle town centre, slightly smaller but chances are if it is in one then it will be also in the other. Something I didn't mention in the other HMV review was that they also sell books. Come to think of it I probably didn't mention it because their book business seems to be wholly encapsulated in the phrase Books Waterstones are overstocked on since they are sister companies. If you go to HMV explicitly to buy books then I would conjecture you have little taste in books. It may be the only place where Katie Price's autobiography has been prominently positioned for any longer than two hours. Which about wraps this review up nicely.

This store was marked for closure in 2019, but was saved and remains open until this day, I'm sure the local town are happy as it is a nice brand to have in the town and avoids another empty unit in Victoria Shopping Centre. The store is a decent size, it has a nice selection of DVDs and albums, and a couple of other accessories such as speakers and headphones and a few miscellaneous items, that seem to be random without fitting into any specific theme. Lack of staff around the store, the atmosphere did feel a little run down and dead. While the store might have survived, the atmosphere... less so. Prices seem higher than Amazon and other online retailers. 3*

The store is very well stocked, and even has some more obscure DVD's (again at very reasonable prices.) The store also stocks some basic games and accessorys (I think?) and has a small book section comprising mainly of celebrity biographys/autobiographys or books written by celebrities (they may sound awful but I'm including books by Tim Burton and Stephen Fry here!) The t-shirts decorating the wall around the shop not only look great, but are (again!) really well priced at 2 for £20 (?), which really is great value for film/tv branded products. The only shame is that it does always seem to be busy, and you do find yourself having to constantly push past people to get where you want. Still, don't let that put you off, great variety, great prices..what's not to love?!?

It may have changed to a name of lesser quality but the stock is still decent. This shop sells mostly CD's and vinyl. There is also a selection of DVDs, T-shirts and tickets for local gigs can be purchased here. This place is well worth a browse on your lunch break. There are many hidden treasures to be found. Just think, Aladdins cave without the push and shove of heaving H.M.V. The prices are relatively similar though. The genres range from dub-step to black metal.

A browser's paradise, RPM is filled to bursting with interesting music releases that are fairly priced, and you can easily spend a while just working your way through the artists if you're a bit of a music buff. Keep your eyes peeled for the sale section, as it is sometimes populated by cds that are a bargain at their asking price.
