It takes a bit of local knowledge to find this stand alone building just off Anniesland Cross but…read moreperhaps, for many, ignorance is bliss. Let's put it this way, Yarrow Recreation Club is not a spot for a first date. While taking in a football match here last year, my friend's request for a lager with a dash of lemonade was greeted with a level of disdain usually reserved for inappropriate declarations of breaking of wind or blocking of toilets. The set up is all very Phoenix Nights, snooker (20p a game), puggies, function hire and a truly immaculate bowling green, with the walls adorned with the names of previous club champions. It's a very serious business here indeed and giggling at some of the names or even making light of the number of bowling tournaments is not appreciated. Quite simply, you are in someone else's territory so you either like what they have created, which to all extents and purposes is a perfectly fine no-thrills pub, or get out. You must be a member (usually reserved for shipyard workers) or know a member, to gain entry which means you're unlikely to encounter anyone under the age of 50. In other words, I could give this place one star accompanied by the review from hell and it would matter not a jot. After all, the likelihood of any of the regulars having heard of Yelp, let alone checking it on a regular basis, is on a par with the chances of them asking for an umbrella in their pint of Tennent's.

I only ended up in Yarrow's Social Club due to the fact a friend of mine lived nearby, otherwise I…read morewouldn't have known the place existed. It is the ideal spot to watch big football games as you will definitely get a seat. The drink is also dirt cheap. However, I would not recommend it to the young and trendy; the average age of the patrons is 67 and 85% of them are male. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming however. Visitors must be signed in by a member.

Oh dear. Toby's is the equivalent of the student union at Strathclyde's Jordanhill Campus except it…read moredoesn't sell alcohol (except for a small window on a Friday), isn't open in the evening and people only go here because there is nowhere else to go really. I came here a few times when I didn't have any other option and every time wasn't the fun or relaxed or even cheap experience you'd expect in a student union. The decor is grim - trying to be cool and trendy with its metal tables and chairs and random mental bars everywhere but it just does not work. The food isn't great - very limited choice (baguette, baked potato, chips) which is usually all sold out by about 12pm and pricey for a uni place. And the staff are nippy! Once a friend joined us with her own packed lunch (the rest of us had sadly all been subject to Toby's grub) and was told in no uncertain terms that she had to leave. I understand that kind of thing in a bar or restaurant or cafe but in a student place where she wasn't taking up an extra table or anything (& the place was half-empty)? It seemed a bit harsh and her tone was so rude you'd have thought we were vandalising the place. Similarly, when another friend took a seat one morning to read the paper before heading to class, when there were only two other people in the place, he was told to leave. After that experience we all went to the cafe across the hall whenever we had to eat on campus. I'm trying to think of something positive to add but I really can't.
