Movement day bounce house with Tracy!

If you're looking for a part time program and an amazing community to go with it - this is the place! Our son spent two amazing years at Highlands (even through the pandemic) and our daughter has now joined in on the fun! Highlands preschool prepared my son for school and has been a perfect transition for my daughter into early childhood education. The daily lessons are fun and interactive, rotating games/toys make the days new and exciting and ending the day with music and dancing is just the cutest! The preschool goes above and beyond, brining in an art/movement teacher each week, while also having visits from Critter Quest, the Fairyland Puppet Show and field trips to the fire station and park! The community has been fantastic, as we have gotten to know many other families through the co-op. Angela, Dani and Tracy are thoughtful, fun, patient and loving - our kids feel how special they are each day.

Highlands preschool is wonderful loving place for children to learn, grow and play. Director Deanna and teacher Angela are absolutely amazing. They both have extensive years in child development and education. Highlands preschool is safe and kind environment. This Co-op is a beautiful community. I've meet my best friends here. I love being part of the classroom & spending time with my son. I highly recommend you book a tour. You won't be disappointed

He has been there since he turned 3, and is now 4.5. At Wildwood, he thrives. I like the size of the facility. There are enough adults around to provide for differing perspectives. While Anita (the director) leads with her kind and warm personality, the staff are also encouraged to take ownership. The brightwheel app also makes communication really easy. In terms of the setup, the school is housed in a converted duplex with lots of thoughtful areas. Students are split into groups by age, and organization is prioritized (lots of toys, but organized in a way that kids can understand and help maintain). The play yard wraps around the school, and kids have plenty of room to stretch their legs and socialize. The families that attend Wildwood are all kind and inviting, and the School-parent association is active. If you are considering preschools in the area, definitely check out Wildwood!

My daughter started in the infant classroom (Roots) with Teacher Lesleigh and is now in the toddler classroom (Flowers) with Teachers Jill and Emma. My daughter has really thrived here. The environment has just the right amount of stimulation to inspire curiosity and play, yet doesn't overwhelm. The indoor and outdoor spaces are really nice and encourage imaginative play, allow for independent play, or group/peer play. The teachers communicate well what they observe in my child throughout the day (in the app and at pickup/drop off), they share stories and observations, and I really feel like they know, love, and care for my daughter. My daughter is learning a lot every day. She comes home with new skills and new words, and the social interactions she is getting with the other kids and adults is definitely helping build her SEL skills. The activities and themes are well thought out, the teachers provide opportunities to do art, dance, climb, read, observe nature (putting a lemon on the table and asking the kids to draw it, planting seeds and observing growth, etc.), "brainstorm" (they have little meetings where they discuss a topic and brainstorm thoughts and ideas), etc. Now about the teachers: Ms. Lesleigh, Ms. Jill, Ms. Emma, Mr. Devon, Ms. Marisol are all wonderful teachers, and wonderful people. They care, they are present, they model good social interactions, they model curiosity and wonder, and they support positive interactions between kids. It seems to me that they know the importance of their work and the impact they are having on so many kids, and they take their role seriously and do an amazing job (and I've observed a lot, I tend to spend some time during drop offs and pick ups chatting and letting my daughter say "goodbye" to her friends). I am very grateful to Wildwood teachers and the director Anita Lee for making my daughter's first school experience so positive (and mine!) and I am very happy with my decision to send my daughter here!

We feel so incredibly lucky to have had Michelle and Chalena in our lives to share their love, care, encouragement, patience, fun, guidance, attentiveness and warmth with our boys. The kids LOVED going to Cottage, each went from before the age of 2 until they went on to Kinder or TK around age 4-5. Cottage is a special place and is hard to put into words. Its small size makes it feel so much more like a family where all kids of different ages support each other and play together. Michelle and Chalena have supported the boys in their learning from early on with letters, numbers, spelling, workbooks and math. The art projects are out of this world, frame worthy. My oldest was completely ready for Kinder and my youngest for TK. Don't hesitate (RUN!) to send your kiddo to this amazing group of kids and teachers. We are extremely sad to say goodbye but feel so fortunate to have had our boys thrive in this amazing community. THANK YOU MICHELLE AND CHALENA. WE LOVE YOU!

We toured other preschools in the area but they felt overwhelming especially for a sensitive two-year old. The school has several outdoor play areas and the kids do a ton of imaginative play and art. There is also weekly dance and music class which my daughter loves. She comes home with flowers she has planted, amazing paintings, and most recently the ability to describe her feelings! The other parents are great and often get together. It's a really special place! The main limitation is that the current hours are 8:30-3:00. We have arranged our work schedules to make this work because this preschool is so worth it.

First and foremost, the teachers are very caring and attentive, not only to children but to parents as well. Since it is a play-based school, different toys are provided each time we attend class. Hence, children have plenty of learning opportunities through play such as working on their fine motor skills, social skills, and exploring different ways of playing. Having a nurturing environment for our daughter to begin her education journey is very important to us. We are very grateful that we've found BCSO as they continue to exceed our expectations. Our daughter wakes up in the morning wanting to go to school and leaves school with a big smile on her face. She had made tremendous progress with her learning development as well. Lastly, we recently relocated to another city, but decided to have our daughter continue attending BCSO. This school is truly a gem!

Having had an older kid go through a different program I'm familiar with the stress that can sometimes accompany a co-op preschool but they made the experience pleasant, judgment free, and safe for everyone! I highly recommend the school!

But what…read moreI found visiting this school, during their Fall event was a bunch of kids who had manners, something rarely seen, even with parental supervision. There was no drama, and they seemed to enjoy themselves, including the older ones. They played nicely together at the various amusements. Those kids communicated with the teachers and staff themselves. They felt safe there and I could feel that. As for the negative reviews I read about the school, having once had a child in two, parents always have the option to pull a child out if the school lacks the alleged ability to control unruly kids, or, as I read in another review, where any semblance of racism or maltreatment because of race would also be cause to pull a child out instead of using social media to bad mouth a school which the 'Great Schools' website rates as one of the best private schools in Oakland. Some kids are just not suited for private school. I learned about differences when I enrolled my kid in Montessori School years ago, then later put him in a private school where the teachers were loving but didn't play games with kids who thought they could act out. Parents always have the option to remove a child out of school not suitable for them. I'm hoping my grandkids attend there. I was impressed with what I experienced during my visit.

Redwood Day is…read moregreat in so many ways, from the teachers, administration, the beautiful campus, and a true sense of community. I have two kids at the school, and I am grateful that I made the decision to send them here for these very important years of their education. For math, the school uses a hybrid form of Singapore Math, which for most parents seems very different from what we learned, but it works (and has success metrics - students in Singapore have one of the highest math mastery in the world). They use a different model in the Middle School for the 6-8th span that equally prepares students for higher level math in High School. Redwood Day has ways for kids who need or seek more in math - my kids are always challenged. They also have a Math Olympiad program and programs/staff to help students who may need additional support. I have never found Redwood Day to be lacking in helping my kids learn, grow, and master math. Culture and celebrations are also very integrated at the school - which celebrates everything from Latin, African American, Asian American, and Jewish Heritage months to Women's History. The school is having something for Ramadan, and I know they have also hosted a Shabbat dinner in addition to other cultural celebrations. All to say, Redwood Day is super inclusive, and my kids come home learning a lot about their friends' cultural traditions - just a couple weeks ago, they did a Holi event. No school is perfect, but I believe that Redwood Day is always evolving, changing, and listening to the parent community. For discipline, I'm thankful for the social and emotional learning that starts in K and goes through 8th. Even as 5 year olds, kids learn about choices, options for dealing with conflict, and what and how to make different (and better) choices when there is conflict. I don't know what the prior post means about authoritative discipline, but long gone are the days of that type of discipline model. My kids (and these next generations) need to learn self-awareness, self-regulation, critical thinking, and agency in working out their own differences - with the guidance and oversight of teachers, coaches, mentors, and role models. Personally, I much prefer that my children talk through issues with their friends, take accountability, practice humility, and have the support of trusted adults to help them navigate challenges. Not everyone is the right fit for any school - and as a parent, it is absolutely on us to ensure that we find mutual synergy with the school, teachers, faculty, and community. For me, Redwood Day was the absolute right choice for my kids - and I know they are more because of it.
