The main issue was these disruptive kids at the theater and the lack of employees around to resolve the situation. myself and 2 other adults had to handle the kids in the theater and then when i called it turns out the kids come regularly and they dont do anything about it. read more

We were hoping for a quiet Friday night movie after a long Christmas and chose a 9:15 p.m. showing. Unfortunately, the experience was anything but relaxing. A group of children was extremely disruptive and disrespectful throughout the entire film. Given the late hour, I'm surprised they were even allowed in. At one point, they directed a racial slur toward another patron, which was especially disturbing. When we tried to find a staff member to address the situation or escort them out, no employees were available. This was very disappointing and has definitely made me think twice about returning to this theater. read more

When a couple brings in two toddlers to see an Agatha Christie murder mystery, it's not because they think those toddlers will be delighted by the clever policing skills and exotic Belgian accent of detective Hercule Poirot. It's because it was cheaper to bring those kids into a movie than to pay for a babysitter, and they don't care how much their noisy kids bother others during the movie. (Exhibit B: the dad's phone went off LOUDLY.) When that dad responds to a request to keep quiet with "move to a different seat or shut your mouth", and the theater's management doesn't kick that family out, that theater should expect a one-star Yelp review. So here's one. This is an old-fashioned movie theater in most ways. It does at least have a modern digital projection system, even if the image isn't perfectly centered. The concession stand offerings are no different than you would have seen in a little neighborhood cinema forty years ago. The auditoriums predate stadium seating, but the aging seats rock back quite comfortably. Parking is a big hassle. Between that and the cramped space around the box office and concession stand, a space so tiny it's as if they expect very few customers at a time, it seems like the idea is to cater only to moviegoers that live within walking distance. If you drive, you'll just have to look around for street parking, which is scarce and which largely comes with 1-hour or 2-hour limitations (during the day at least). You might very well find this theater appealingly dainty if you don't have a problem like the one I had. But if you do, you can expect it to be handled poorly. I will not return to this theater, and I can assure you that you have better options for moviegoing venues. read more

Very disappointing experience here. The theater itself is very nice. Old school (in a good way), cheap enough tickets, comfy seats,... Unfortunately, during our particular movie, a group of three middle school or so aged kids were on their phones, shouting, literally getting up and sitting on each other, off and on throughout the movie. There's people talking during a movie, and then there's this. I've never been at a movie with anything like it. Anyway. I finally got up and went out to the main area, told the staff about it, and went and sat back down. Maybe another 10 minutes, kids are still doing it, and no one from the theater has done anything. Go out and say something a second time. The lady (I believe the manager of the shift, Amber?) actually came in this time, sat a seat away from them for maybe 5 minuets, during which time they of course behaved, then left again. The rest of the movie went about the same of shouting and phones from the three, and I wasn't going to bother getting up to complain a third time with no actual response from the manager. It's really disappointing. I can't hold it much against the kids - even if they should know better, they are still just kids. Everything else about the theater was good, so I'd imagine most peoples' experiences here will be good. But with a manager that cares this little, and so many options for good movie theaters around the cities, I won't be back. read more

First and last time I'll go to Highland Theater 2 (upstairs). No space between rows at all (worse than airline coach), small screen, garbage all over the floor!! Can't they sweep the floor every few months whether it needs it or not? I'm surprised at the owners thinking they can squeeze the rows so close together and that folks will continue to return to the chicken coop upstairs. The seating would be perfect for an elementary school-sized person. The men's room was tiny and atrocious! As a neighborhood loyalist and long time fan of this theatre, I was truly dissatisfied in the new upstairs chair type and theatre layout. The chairs are crammed together like I am flying with Delta. Not only are they to tightly crammed, they are designed for a viewer who is short in stature. If you are taller than 5'5 you will be very uncomfortable. Wish customer's comfort had been top of mind when the redo happened at this neighborhood gem. Please rethink the upstairs chairs. read more

This is an older theater and is reminiscent of my childhood. I love it for that alone. Yes it's not as lush as some of the newer places but it feels so right and much more like a destination and treat than stopping shopping at the mall for a show. My friend brought me here to watch a movie with a message (...). I thought it will be an old movie theatre, smelly, badly maintained, but no, it was clean neat red carpet and red seat (if I remember well). The movie was relatively social and sad, there were few people in bar night, but I still remember how cool this place was (after wiping those tears). I've been coming here since I was six years old, back when the balcony was a balcony, not the second screening room. You won't find the latest digital projection equipment or high end sound, and the seats aren't as comfortable as they were years ago. Neighborhood theaters are always my preferred venues for watching movies...since they have just a few screens, they have a tendency to carry quality movies, and you can't beat the aesthetics. Even the shabbiness adds to the charm. The Highland is one such theater. Sure, the acoustics suck and the seats are rock-hard, but the popcorn's yummy and the marquee is out of this world. Finally - no young punks! Went to the Highland Theater recently to see Up in The Air. We typically hit the suburban mega plex, but since we LOVE the Highland Grill, we made an evening out of it. Pros - Price is right - $6.25 per ticket and concessions are reasonable Popcorn and DC - delicious Crowd - no punks, so I didn't have to give the SHHHHHHHHHHH or the stink eye. Seats - they rock back and forth Cons - Minimal parking, but I won't hold it against them. I think this may be our new preferred theater. read more

I really love the upstairs theater. The first time I ever smelled pot was in this theater. I was with my mom and her friend and her friend mentioned that teenagers were smoking pot in the back. This is definitely an old school theater. If you don't mind the retro feel and old dingy seats, this is the place. They only have two theaters, one on the lower level and one on the upper level. Our movie was showing in the upper theater and when we got there it was so hot you could actually smell the heat. Someone asked the management to turn the heat down, which definitely helped. Two other issues: I love movie theater popcorn, but the scent was so strong it almost made you sick! Also, if you are seated in the upper theater, you can hear the noise and bass from the theater below which can be a little distracting. Things I loved: FREE water! If you ask, they will give you a free cup of water. Who wants to pay $3.25 for a bottled water when you can get one for free? I also thought it was cute that they had one of the high school employees read the "rules" instead of showing one of those dorky videos about not having your cell phone on and texting. read more

Went to the theater with my kids on Presidents' Day. Door was locked, with 15-20 people waiting outside. The employees arrived five minutes before the movie was supposed to start. No sorry for the delay or anything. Theater floors were dirty...with food on the ground before the day had even started. Seats weren't comfortable , and my toddler had some difficulty being able to see the screen. I think I will pay an extra $2 and go to a nicer theater.... read more

The architect who designed this theater is the same one who designed the theater in my home town so it has a familiar feel. Its old, that is for sure, and it isn't "state of the art" but it is a movie theater experience, it is clean, the staff are nice and the prices (considering the competition) are reasonable. I love the upper theater best, though both are great. I look to go to movies here first, before looking any other place. read more

Shoulda asked when their popcorn was last popped because the stuff they served a few nights ago was stale. Yes, stale. We asked for a little butter (topping) on top and what we observed happening was butter topping being incorporated in layers and shaking throughout the fill of the large bag with stale popcorn. Not a "little on top" by any standards. Note to self: Always ask about popcorn freshness before laying down the cash and declining any "butter topping". A reminder to folks: please do not bring your babe in arms to a late movie. Their baby noises and cries are disruptive to others. The Highland Theater is cool. It's usually full of fun people. It's an old theater with two screens. It's a bit dated, but that's all part of the appeal for me. This theater usually has first run movies and the audience is normally made up of Saint Thomas and St Catherine's students. Fun! read more

This is one of my favorite theaters, there are so many great things about it, for starters it is a classic, tons of neat old decor. Its also big, the main room is huge, and there is a 2nd screen upstairs which is probably a former balcony. The theater is in a charming Uptown- like commercial area with many excellent dining options, this makes it awesome for making an evening out of going to the movies. During the holidays this area is nicely decorated, which is quite enchanting. The Highland outdoes the mall by a long shot for me, and the prices are about the same, I think the concessions are actually cheaper, and they have delicious popcorn. Frankly the theater is a big part of the movie experience, if you think it doesn't matter then maybe you should just stay home and watch a DVD, if you want to actually experience a movie come to a place like the Highland, its alot of fun. read more

Skip the mega-mall-plex-o-rama! Tickets are cheap, the popcorn (contrary to the review below) in my experience is fresh (albeit only average tasty-quotient), concessions are reasonable (none of that 1.2 ounce of candy in a shoebox-sized container stuff you get at the big chain theaters). I do tend to avoid the small upstairs theater, its fine--but i wouldn't see some grand visual epic up there, more like a simple comedy that doesn't need the immersive experience. The main theater is decent. It is a bit worn, but seats are comfortable, and the screen and sound are very good. Staff is comprised of really nice kids, and they will answer the phone IN PERSON sometimes, so don't freak out if you call and get an actual human. Great older theater. One screen "upstairs," one "downstairs." None of that IMAX 3D crap. Just film on a screen, thank you very much. Parking is kind of a pain, especially in the winter, because you'll have to walk a bit. They only take cash, but have an ATM in the lobby (hmmmm.... I wonder who pockets the ATM fee?) Some good places to eat very near, so good choice for dinner-and-a-movie types. read more

I'm a "big" fan of Highland Theater for a number of reasons. Nice staff, $5 Tuesdays, decent popcorn, close to my home, old/nostalgic building with a lot of charm. The reason I say "big" fan... I'm 6'5" tall with fairly long legs (36" inseam) and their recent remodel... while beautiful... has turned the place into a repository for the vertically challenged. I absolutely cannot sit in any seat other than on the end of a row, and then need to sit sideways with my legs in the aisle. Any middle-of-row seat would be extreme torture for me, as well as anyone nearby. This is similar to the worst airline seat EVER... I have asked employees about this, and they are aware, but don't believe there is a plan to address. A simple fix would be to remove an aisle seat from every other row, allowing a few seats for the long-limbed loyalists. Other than that, please keep up the good work! It's nice to have you in the neighborhood and I expect business will improve dramatically when the 'Enlightened Left' successfully push their high-density masses into the new Ford plant development (a modern "Potterville") in the next few years! read more

I love this downstairs part of the theatre and I hope it can be another Riverview or Edina Theatre where it can be used for special artistic movies or good movies that everyone loved to see a few months after they were popular at a good price.
