"I don't wanna be a chicken…read more.. I don't wanna be a duck... So I shake my..." clap clap clap clap Welcome to a slice of Route 66 in the Highland Park, Los Angeles, California must visit list. Where you'll see the one and only Chicken Boy! This 22 foot statue of a man meets chick sit on top of the gray building in-between to Bionicos la Palapa juice shop and La Fuente Restaurant across from Delicias Bakery and Some on Figueroa Street. If heading east up Figueroa toward 56th it's much easy to spot versus heading west as it's behind a billboard, but even then you might see that red polo shirt, blue jeans and beak poking out. It has the 2010 Governor's Historic Preservation Award as well as the Highland Park Heritage Trust Preservation Award (2009/2010). Originally located downtown as the top display for the 1960s Chicken Boy Fried Chicken Restaurant it was relocated to its new home on Route 66 in 2007. Parking in the area is almost all metered or paid, but some residential parts of 56th, 57th and closeby have some classic street parking available. It's a fun photo op, located in a cool area and definitely one you'll remember.

They exist in various forms all around the country! Here's a few examples in Southern California: Porsche Experience (he was Golf Man previously) in Carson, CA, El Salsero in Malibu, Edwin in El Monte, Sergio in East L.A., and more! A Muffler Man torso plus a chicken head equals Chicken Boy. He's also known as (AKA) "The Statue of Liberty of Los Angeles". The arms on the man were tinkered with so they could hold the bucket of chicken instead of a muffler (Muffler Man) or an axe (Paul Bunyan). These Muffler Men have been altered to hold different objects depending on what they're advertising. This statue is made of Fiberglass and is 22' tall. Originally, this Chicken Boy sat upon a roof above a chicken restaurant near Grand Central Market on Broadway between 4 & 5th Streets. It resided there from 1960 to 1984. The owner died and the statue was given to Amy Inouye. For 20 years, this thing was split in half and each half went into different storage units. In 2007, Chicken Boy was permitted to be back on display, but in a new location and as an Art Installation on the roof of Future Studio Design & Gallery. Interesting fact is that both locations are part of the Historic Route 66! It is kind of difficult to view the entire statue. If you stand across the street, the view is better. Still can't see the shoes or feet from there. If you want to check out this quirky statue, you'll find him in Highland Park.

It took a couple of seconds to register in my mind, but I had seen a gate, behind which something…read morehad sparkled. This warranted a second look. I turned heel and headed back a few paces to the formidable black steel gate. Through the bars of the gate lay a kind of alleyway formed by two buildings. Hung by pegs and anchors onto the stucco walls of the buildings was an assortment of symbolic curios; mirrors adorned with colorful frames, bells, birdcages, and trinkets. Below them were brightly painted clay statues similar to Hindu deities, topless sirens reminiscent of mermaids, and one resembling Kuan Yin the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion. (Ironically, I was later to find her description plaque intact but the statue itself missing). Before trying the doorknob on the gate I glanced to my left to see an article framed behind glass and hanging from one of the walls of the entryway. Apparently I wasn't the first to discover this curiosity, Los Angeles Times writer David A. Keeps found it first back in 2006. I skimmed the article to learn that Pilates instructor Mary-Ascension Saulnier wrote a love story at some point and founded this place in 2002 as a physical manifestation of it. Also Mr. Keeps pointed out that this "breezeway" is officially known as the Meditation Water Garden, (although I found that it's popularly known as "The Garden Of Believing"), and it contains "39 hand-painted wishing well fountains paired with 72 affirmations" from Kaballa scholar Rabbi Yehuda Berg's Kaballa interpretation "The 72 names of God". After glancing at the garden's posted hours, I determined that the gate must be unlocked: with hesitant hope and anticipatory excitement I reached for the knob. It turned a full 180 degrees and with an easy pull, the door opened. I stepped through the archway and into a sort of mystical place. However, on closer inspection it was clear that the place was in a state of disrepair. The water fountains were all dry save one located in the back that gave off a soft burbling sound. Playing in the base of the fountain's pool were two clay children, one holding a wire mesh purse filled with marbles and another chatting in her ear. A small blond sprite clad in a toga and playing a pan flute hides behind a plant next to them. Neglected extension cords splay out over a couple of statues like snakes in the garden of Eden and hang in knots from the wire skeleton of a Christmas tree. A couple of phone books occupy the seat of one of the meditational chairs, and the place feels a bit cramped because of the clutter. However there is still much beauty to be found here. I found Osirus, a statue representing Intuition. He sits on a pedestal cross legged gazing down into an empty bowl. His green eyelids are mostly closed while he ponders his inner reflection. A plant grows near his feet, and red Christmas ornament balls dangle randomly over his shoulder. Earth Prana, our vital life energy, makes an appearance in a wood carving of womans head; her sun colored hair flows in the wind, and a sullen expression covers her face as she casts a glance down toward terra firma. Colorful birdcages made of cast iron jut out from the walls in the back, and hummingbird feeders hang from trees framed by a mission tiled roof. Yes, there is still much beauty to be found here, and I'm sure that once the goddess of compassion returns to the garden, things will undergo a substantial improvement. **Please see pics and take a tour of the garden** PS another yelp review of this place can be found under the unofficial name at http://www.yelp.com/biz/garden-of-believing-eagle-rock

The famous Hedge where Michael Myers lurks behind is a few blocks away from the other houses. We walked to it, about 20 minutes, but we do walk like crazy so I know most people will drive. 5 minutes drive in a residential neighborhood, plenty of street parking. The Hedge looks the same, we clowned around a bit to take some photos of my husband playing Michael Myers and no, he's not that creepy. People live in that house so be respectful of their privacy. It is great to see all these locations so well preserved after so many years since they shot the original Halloween directed by Maestro Carpenter in South Pasadena. I am glad at least this part of LA is great about preservation. I wil conclude my horror location quest in the area with the Hedge. But this is your Halloween location trilogy guide!

I'd definitely recommend making a reservation though because it gets pretty busy. My personal favorite is the duck ragu if you want something super savory and rich with that deep umami flavor. It was Friday night and we couldn't decide where to go, and this place made the pick. First of all, the vibe is great. It's very lively and part of charming mini plaza off the street. The first thing I notice were the 2000s Hip Hop & RnB jams playing in the background. I was pleasantly surprised that the tunes kept going throughout the night! It definitely made me feel right at home. Finn, our server, was super friendly and helpful. But make no mistake--the star of the show here is the food! Every single item that we ordered--from the starters to mids to mains to desserts--was absolutely delicious! We will definitely be back soon!

It's just a tiny platform you stand on surrounded by mirrors so be careful not to get too close to the edges. I think the photos online made it seem much bigger and more "galaxy-like," so I had different expectations going in You're only inside for about five minutes before it's time to exit for the next group.
