I've been seeing Jen for Interstitial Cystitis for the last 4 months and she has absolutely changed my life for the better. For weeks prior to meeting her, 5 doctors could not figure out what was wrong with me (my symptoms came on very quickly and strongly), nor did they do anything to help, including a very expensive specialist and the emergency room. I had never been to an acupuncturist prior to coming to Highland Holistic (HH) and my only regret is why didn't I come sooner. After my car accident in 2016, I was living with constant headaches, upper back pain (sharp burning sensation), stiffness, sprain wrist and I couldn't sleep. I am someone who is for the most part healthy, and have not had to deal with lots of issues or visiting the Doctor often. But recently, I had a case of hives that were not going away. While I have sensitive skin, chronic hives was not something I had ever dealt with before. I went to a dermatologist and was told to take 10mg of Claritin twice a day for 8 weeks. This was not easy for me and was challenging, because while I see the need for the use of medicine, I rarely take antibiotics, supplements, or pills of any form really. I was open to it though and really did not have an alternative at the time because I was scared something was very wrong with me. The Claritin did not get rid of the hives, it barely suppressed it. I tried the keto diet, I tried whole30, and did not drink for two months and still it was there. I had bloodwork done and all the results came back normal. I was frustrated and worried and feeling like this was something I would have to deal with long-term, because after two months nothing really changed. I was nervous I would have to barely eat or drink anything I enjoyed and do a crazy permanent elimination diet for the rest of my life, because if two months of 20 mg of Claritin a day was not knocking it out, then something was wrong with me. One day, when I had reached my wit's end, I started researching online and saw that acupuncture has been shown to have positive effects on hives. It was early in the new year and my insurance from my last place of employment was finished, so I thought I would try something new. I contacted Highland Holisitic and Jennifer Black happened to pick up the phone (which I know was lucky of me) and made time to see me THAT day, at the END of her day, on a fully scheduled Saturday. Her compassion and care was immediately received on my end, even through the phone. Visiting Jen was the best decision I could have made in this long, confusing and scary journey. She is an amazing listener, and a very talented acupuncture practitioner- she is VERY knowledgable and knows her stuff. I came to her office, vulnerable and nervous of what she might say, I even cried in front of her bc I was losing hope, but she was sweet and comforting. She was confident in her ability to help me and I felt lighter leaving her office that day. Jen was able to educate me on what was going on and had a thorough examination, unlike any experience i've had in a medical setting. Jen has always been honest about how long the process would take, and it took about two-three months to rid my body of hives, but they are officially gone. I would say I have emailed Jen about a hundred times and she always responds in a timely manner and is thoughtful and helpful. This is something that I did not think could happen, and I have been able to live my life with enjoyment in it. If I had not met Jen I would have kept searching things online, cutting all foods out of my life, basically being miserable and possibly taking hard meds just to live in peace. I am so grateful for Jen, for Highland Holistic, and for their knowledge and consistency.
