What an Amazing experience this was. The staff were all so great and friendly. Full of information…read moreand spent tons of time with the kids ensuring they had plenty of opportunity to ask questions and feed the reindeer. The natural surrounding is breathtaking as well. Just come prepared as the winds can get intense and weather changes quickly on the range.

To get to the reindeer is a muti step process, that is well worth the effort…read more First stop is the reindeer center itself, where you pay and can rent "Wellies" (waterproof rubber boots) for £.50. I would definitely recommend it if your only footwear is a pair of sneakers, as it can get quite muddy on the mountain. Also, would recommend wearing thick socks if you need to rent the Wellies as they are not insulated at all. After you pay, (about £32 for a family package) follow your guide in your car to a location about a mile or so from the center, where you pull over for a one mile easy hike to a fenced off area where there are about 60 or so reindeer. Once inside the gated area you have full access to the reindeer and are able to photo, pet and even feed these majestic creatures. They are surprisingly gentle and obviously used to being around humans. The guides are very nice and provide information about the reindeer, the center and the surrounding areas. Dress appropriately for all types of weather conditions for the season. Even if you are only about a mile or so from your vehicle, the weather can quickly change. This was our second visit to the center and regardless whether it was in a small or a large group of fellow hikers, we felt we had great access to the animals.

We had a great tour with Bill today. You never know how a day is going to go with a tour guy. He…read moreknows his stuff! He has lived here and lectured at university about the history of the area. He personalized the experience. We went to a lil restaurant called White Cottage and it was right next to the water. We got to meet the cook. All in all, it was a surprisingly great day with a great deal of knowledge learned

The tour started at 8:30 am and our meeting point was in front of the Columba Hotel and our tour guide Jim was wearing a kilt and was easy to understand. The itinerary for this tour was: * Loch Ness (with a view of the ruined Urquhart Castle - they Day we were on our tour, it was closed) * Glen Shiel (location where a Jacobite battle was fought against the British Government. On the drive, Jim pointed out a memorial to a Scotsman who lead away Govt Troops, but we didn't stop at the gravesite and I can't recall the name) * Five Sisters of Kintail (saw the peaks while driving out to the Isle of Skye) * Eilean Donan Castle (world famous and extremely photogenic) * Skye Bridge (fabulous piece of engineering connecting Skye with the mainland. Jim informed us that the particular link in the curve of the bridge was to enable the Britannica to be able to pass below to get to the Sea, bit of course while the bridge was being built, the Britannica was decommissioned!) * Cuillin Mountains * Portree * Old Man of Storr * Kilt Rock + Mealt Waterfalls * Quiraing Coming in early spring, we really lucked out and spotted pretty much all the wildlife (not including birds) which Skye is know for, including a gorgeous majestic herd of deer (shades of that Scottish TV show - Monarch of the Glen) at dusk, when driving back from Portree back to the Skye Bridge. Also in the morning, we spotted a heard of wild goats (including babies!) and wild horses with their untamed manes and after lunch we stopped by a closed pen by the roadside to check out the majestic Highland Cows in all their glory! The bus was super comfortable and it was an interesting group, with pretty much everyone on the tour being American. So why the 3-stars? Cause I feel Jim could have done a better job: 1) we discovered early on that the mike wasn't working. Sitting in the back seat, it was hard to hear him. He said he'd connect with another guide and get the mike fixed, but that didn't happen, so a lot of times he was telling folks information and we in the back seat couldn't hear it 2) it was clearly written not to eat or drink in the car, but Jim was doing both and then had a throwaway line about oops, he really shouldn't have done it. In the meantime, all of us obeyed the rules, even tho" a takeaway coffee wouldn't have gone amiss! 3) he was so busy chatting to the folks up front, he missed pointing out some of the sights. So we were driving by the Old Man of Storr Rock foundation and one of the other passengers pointed out (he'd been to Skye previously). 4) I feel more Jacobean history could have been told to us. Admittedly this is not the Culloden tour, but this area is rich in Jacobite history and Jim didn't do that great a job conveying the historical richness of the area we were driving thru. There were some pros- 1) unexpected snowfall / sleet meant we could go up the Quiraing and Jim did a great job showing us other sites around Skye, as we went further up along the coast and saw a most beautiful castle turned hostel. 2) very accommodating about comfort spots and stopping to see the wildlife I'm grateful got the chance to tour the Isle of Skye, however my first preference would have been a Rabbie's Tour. First they sat us down in a lounge/sitting room for "snacks" while we played cards, then we were taken to the dining room for dinner. They presented each course, explaining the preparation, etc. We really enjoyed our experience and the delicious food. Everything was presented beautifully. We stayed in the garden rooms which are a newer addition to the hotel. They had great views. The rooms were clean and they provided goodies in the coffee/tea/refrigerator area. We all really enjoyed our time in Fort Augustus and look forward to visiting The Lovat and Station Road restaurant again.

The Station Road restaurant to their Afternoon Teas are inspired with the beauty that each season brings. Fresh flavors, delightful aromas and colours, and fresh ingredients grown in the Lovat kitchen gardens. You can enjoy a real farm to table experience! The service was very attentive and courteous. They offered me a glass of champagne for the birthday. The ambiance was glassy and country chic with a great attention to details. The portions are on the small side as the emphasis is placed on design and presentation of the dish. The lamb was absolutely exquisite.
