No, a stadium is about the traditions, the men & women who have passed through it throughout the years, and the fan experience. There may be no better view in college football than the one that peers down into the horseshoe-shaped confines of Memorial Stadium. in the fall, the colors sloping down from the Campanile are a picturesque autumn postcard, and the views to the north can be so clear that you can see for miles. This old haunt has been around for more than 100 years, starting as McCook Field to its newly-renovated state as the David Booth Memorial Stadium. These days, the stadium has been modernized and given that luxury box opportunity that so many venues have come to demand. Aluminum benches have been replaced with seating; video boards have gotten upgraded with current technology. WiFi has been deployed throughout the facility (KU Guest), which VASTLY enhances the fan experience. Ask anyone what their frustration can be like when around a large crowd with spotty mobile coverage: I bet they'll use profanity. So I'm biased. I bleed crimson & blue and I love a great fall football experience. I loved walking down the hill into the stadium for graduation and can't wait for my progeny to do the same. The new stadium expects big things to happen on the turf. KU has built themselves a snazzy new dance floor, now they just need the boogie down to happen. Rock Chalk!

Anyone in Lawrence or that follows KU knows that as of this writing, what was once Memorial Stadium…read moreis now reduced to a pile of rubble. Bigger things are coming down the pike, but I wanted to take the chance to leave a review for the old girl before it's all but a memory. This stadium didn't get all the love it deserved, IMO. It was a dedicated World War I Memorial for all the students who lost their lives. I think that gets forgotten in the modern day arms race of bigger/better with college athletics, and that's what the original purpose was here. As time went on, people lambasted it for having a track around it, appearing more amateur than the big southern stadiums. But you know what? KU's Track history is pretty freaking great so I think that was also misguided. Oh, and something else that was really cool here was that the band could run right onto the field from the north end, down the stairs and onto the field. Always a fun tradition that can really only be captured with college football. There's also the hill where you can be a part of the gameday action and even watch part of the game, which is such a fun throwback to a simpler time. Fingers crossed the new design allows some of that, but I'm not sure yet. But yes, time went on and there were several limitations here, admittedly. The old metal bleachers, the outdated concourses, et al. I'm not enamored with the new design from what I've seen, but I'll try to welcome it when it's here. It's hard because we all have some core, amazing memories from our time in college, and when I was here we were rolling with Mark Mangino and winning the Orange Bowl. I'll continue to hold onto those memories of the old Memorial Stadium!

The different departments put on a science carnival every year and this year I made sure to attend. WOW!!! What an amazing building! This is a fabulous building with all the latest and greatest. The lecture halls are comfy and spacious. There are huge screens for students to view materials. The lecture rooms are big but they didn't feel vacuous. Every discipline was outfitted in the latest and greatest. The physics lab, for instance, had all the right equipment and materials to provide an amazing show for the visitors. There were so many rooms and tons of space. Even the student areas were very accommodating. Places that in other buildings would have been off limits were used for lounging and study areas. There is no way to leave this building without being incredibly impressed. What a fabulous addition to KU!!

I work at KU but on the West Campus so I rarely venture to the Union. Recently, I was required to…read morego there for a graduation ceremony. I was dreading this like a toothache. I pictured terrible parking, difficult to find room and too many people crammed in a poorly ventilated mini-auditorium. To my surprise, the Union was quite a pleasure. Parking was not the nightmare I envisioned and I was able to get a space within walking distance of the Union. I was able to easily locate the Woodruff Auditorium. Staff did a great job of posting directions at easy-to-find locations. I was able to find the auditorium and easily get a seat. The Woodruff Auditorium was big and spacious. I had no problem finding a seat and getting situated for graduation. This is a large auditorium but they did not squish people into spaces. There was plenty of room and it was the perfect climate. The acoustics were great, too, and I could hear perfectly from the back of the room. I was very impressed with this venue. I did not really have a chance to shop or venture into any of the other parts of the Union. From my quick glance, though, I could see this place was stocked with all the amenities people would need. There was a small convenience store, a large bookstore, a bank and other stores tucked away inside this building. Very nice place and the perfect venue for graduation.

Obviously, I had no idea what I was in for. My dad knew his way around and mysteriously managed to walk us past his "Outstanding Graduate of 1976" plaque. "No pressure" he told me. Yeah right. - Bookstore: "Wait, I need books?" Yes, books are good. The Bookstore has great deals on student essentials ranging from books and papers to Apple products (score!). Remember to load Beak'em Bucks on your student ID during enrollment -- especially if it's on your parents' dime ;) -- and you can use your KU card here instead of cash for some items (not sure if that really works for books, but I doubt it). - Walking to Memorial Stadium for football games: To get to the football stadium, there is a great shortcut through the Union. You enter on the 4th floor and go down to the bottom and presto -- the field is right in front of you! Go 'hawks! - JayBowl: I reviewed JayBowl separately, so I'll be brief. Bowling. *Extremely* student-friendly pricing. Bowling. That simple. - Classes: Yep, I even had a few classes in the Union. The lecture hall on the 4th floor is very nice! - Student Involvement and Leadership Center: If you're interested in getting involved on campus, you should DEFINITELY swing by the SILC office. Tons of awesome organizations to get involved in. Student Senate, Natural Ties, Alternative Breaks, KU LEAD, Greek Life and dozens of other organizations. Definitely something for everyone and lots of interesting people to meet. - Inter-Fraternity Council: Interfratters unite at the IFC office. Not sure how much work gets done, but I'm pretty sure those guys have a good time! - Blueprints Leadership Conference: For aspiring leaders and folks that are just interested in leadership (shout-out to the Leadership Minor), the Blueprints leadership conference is awesome. Check it out. - Rock Chalk Revue practice: I even had a few RCR practices in the Union. For the un-initiated, RCR is an annual variety show and philanthropy founded in the '50s. My wife and I met when we were partners in Rock Chalk so those days hold a special place in my heart, plus we won Rock Chalk pretty handily that year!. The store is not too big, but has everything you would want that's made from their honey. Our main reason for going was for the 5 lb. honey. They also make chapsticks from the honey with lots of different flavors and different other items. The employees were super friendly and very helpful.
