First, this review is very LONG overdue since my daughter graduated 5th grade in Aug 2025. However,…read moreit's given me time to gather my thoughts about what to say about this gem and put into the right words what an amazing school Century is. We enrolled my daughter in Preschool at three years old and likely would have stayed beyond our time there, if they had let us. So, here are just a few things I loved about our experience at Century School: The Staff: The Century staff are the finest humans to ever human. They are highly experienced, care deeply about their kids, and go above and beyond and meet the kids where they are in their learning and help guide them, so they feel successful and confident when picking up new skills. The Hours: If you are a working parent, you get it. School pick up is hard. They have your back w/7:30am drop off and 5:30 pick up. They teach critical thinking and self-reliance: The kids have chores; they have responsibility, they have a plan each day and the result is that they own equity in their learning experiences. Another plus is that the older kids also learn to tutor and guide the younger kids because the classes are mixed ages. You are a part of a Family/community: When you are a parent or student of Century you are a part of a family. Truly, I know it sounds cheesy but it's true. Some of my most lifelong solid parent friends are a result of our kids attending century together. There is a bond and a community that is fostering there which isn't comparable to any other schools. I would choose Century over and over again, to help shape my kiddo's foundational learning. My Kiddo is in 6th grade now and is still ahead in many core subjects because of the work they do with their students and I never ever felt like I didn't know exactly what was going on with her education.

Century School is the BEST THING WE EVER DID FOR OUR KIDS. I feel bad for the person who gave…read moreCentury a 1 star review - I REALLY do- but her experience is not one that I, nor any parents or kids I know have experienced. Frankly, I find the claims of "academic malpractice" not only insulting to those of us that LOVE this school but bordering on libelous. The reviewer speaks to a number of issues I can readily contradict. I feel strange about posting a school review on Yelp of all places, but feel compelled to do so. First, there is mention of testing and progress. Each child at Century takes a standardized assessment every 6 months and parents are provided with written results showing academic progress in relation to previous years. Additionally, parents can opt into the Lawrence Virtual School K12 curriculum that includes additional state tests to measure your child's performance. On top of that, every child's academic progress is MEASURED DAILY. All you have to do is ask and any teacher will walk you through exactly what they've learned THAT DAY. Our children regularly bring home completed workbooks. We receive emails and texts, not just about performance but what each teacher appreciates about our children (and what they don't) as well as who their friends are, pictures, etc. On many occasions, we have had lengthy "parent-teacher conferences" when dropping off/picking up our children. The teachers have always been gracious with their time. Second, the reviewer mentions transitioning to public school. We have friends whose children attend other private schools and ALL of our children have had to figure out how to transition to public school. There are a number of differences between Century and public school that our son encountered in his transition - moving to larger class sizes, less peer tutoring, and group instruction. There are more kids, more distractions, changing classes, and more peer pressure. Fortunately, Century prepares parents and kids for this transition. The principal partnered with and introduced the kids to their public-school counselors, taking them on a group tour of their new school, sharing tips for success, and addressing any challenges he anticipated prior to the transition. For example, they knew our son would need to show more of his math work in middle school. Our son struggled for 3-4 weeks with the transition. And, so did we with everything that was new. But now he's settled in and at our most recent teacher conference we were told how he stands out as a leader and is making A's in most of his classes. Century prepared him extremely well and deserves credit for it. Third, on the subject of follow ups to find out if Century's "methods are successful." My first thought is - This isn't a research experiment. It's a school. My elementary school teachers never followed up with my progress. Did yours? However, Century school teachers HAVE FOLLOWED UP. The principal asked all 5th grade graduates to come back 2 weeks into their 6th grade year so he could give them a graduation gift and to find out how things were going. The teachers let kids know they always have a place at Century. Many former Century students volunteer during afternoons, days off, or summer vacations to mentor and work with current students. And some Century students come back as teachers while in college. Fourth, the reviewer states that Century just wants to cash you checks without interest in your children. The reviewer makes it seem like they are all about money. This is offensive. Century is NOT-FOR-PROFIT. The teachers and principal love what they do, work long hours, and run on a lean budget. Frankly, it's sad what we pay teachers at ANY school, public or private, who spend 8+ hours a day with our kids teaching them things we don't have time to teach them. Century is very inexpensive considering it's year round, runs from 7:30-5:30 daily, and provides breakfast, lunch, snacks, downtown treat trips, and field trips. More than that, I've never experienced a more caring environment for our children. I know how much the teachers care because of the texts they send when my child isn't feeling well, the fun pictures they send when they are on a field trip we can't attend, and the fact that our children ask us to invite their teachers to every single birthday party or social event we host. Our children LOVE their teachers and principal as much as they love their friends. And the teachers love them too. Century has taught our kids to be good human beings - emphasizing kindness, responsibility, compassion, hard work, courtesy, and honesty. They have learned to be intellectually curious and love learning for the sake of learning. The previous reviewer's experience is so different from my own and from everyone I know at Century that I felt it was important to counter it with our experience over the past 7 years. With certainty, I can say - Century is the best decision we've made for our kids.

This is so extreme that many students have had private testing to note their skill level as above average or even gifted, but the teacher tells the students to their faces that they aren't smart, can't read books, insults their disabilities, reminds them of every mistake they have ever made in his class and does so with insults and stern. He is harsh in his presentation and grading, and only teaches rote memorization without critical thinking or interest in the ideas of his students. It has made many kids hate going to school, and many are leaving the school at the end of the year, but regardless the principal would rather stay the course and actually try to punish students who speak out. What you are told by the admissions is not what is actually true of the school. There are very limited options for learning outside their standard curriculum, much of which is quite remedial and with the assumption that your kid will not go to a good college. I've seen multiple students have soul crushing experiences. They have been without a school counselor for almost 4 months despite that many of their students are in major mental health crises. I have even seen them call the parents of a student that they know is in an abusive home to complain about speaking up for themselves to abuse from this teacher. It's so heartless and dangerous. Multiple students are showing signs of anxiety from things happening with this teacher and the principal. They will make no adjustments at the school to address these issues, even if the students have written diagnoses. There are major issues regarding racial/ethnic/religious equity and inclusion. The school isn't ADA compliant despite having a student that needs an elevator - it has been broken all year. They refuse to have parent meetings including conferences have a zoom/phone option despite having a parent that requires that for participation. I have seen almost no hands on learning in any class. I think that this school has probably changed and likely used to be better than it is now. I've never seen a school think so poorly of it's own students and be so eager to push out anyone who needs anything. There's also a lot of mismanagement. There are a few teachers who are real gems, but go elsewhere if you can unless they have some major staffing changes.

This place is very special, and my daughter has thrived in the small, customized environment. Kids are encouraged be themselves, and the only cookie cutter I see is they're all different. Check this place out especially if your child marches to their own beat. Art, theater and music programs are standouts (shocking, I know, based on the first five sentences of this review). Here's a picture from a middle school science field trip, though.

This certainly is no longer the case. Last year there were teachers who were definitely not nice to the kids, but the administration kept them somewhat in line. Both the principal and headmaster positions turned over and this is now a school where the staff which encompasses both the administration and many of the teachers are actually guilty of bullying the students. I would not send my kids to this school at this point and I would not recommend Veritas to any parent that wants to provide a Christian education to his or her child/children. I started in Basehor-Linwood Virtual school as a freshman. It is a brilliant way to graduate faster…read moreand it requires much discipline and dedication. I worked very hard on my work and did well. I however DID NOT graduate high school because Virtually learning math and physics isn't for everyone. This is not the reason I'm writing this review. I have the school itself 5 stars for being up to date, and possible to do. The staff is very helpful and Tammy Potts is the golden girl! She dedicated time and energy into every student. I feel she deserves the highest pay a teacher can possibly earn. She guided me through so many papers and she taught me MLA format. However, I am here to complain about the director Nicole Hodges. She works very hard and it is her objective to keep order. She's a very cold unfriendly woman. I was talking in the classroom to a friend of mine as we took a break from the six hours we've sat still working. There were mothers in the classroom with screaming babies and I made a comment on the fact that they need to be in daycare and not my learning environment. Nicole overheard my conversation and pulled my friend in the office to gather information on what I said and then she called me in. First she demanded my name and she scolded me harshly for judging someone. I apologized and I was ready to move on. I went back to work on my paper. Then she called me back into her office with my grades pulled up. She expressed to me that I was "Lucky to be apart of the program" I was several credits behind due to the fact that I had turned in three credits that day and my work was not graded yet. She was sure that I felt small for what I said. In fact she went into Jan's office and closed the door to talk about what I had just done. I heard them talking about how I should apologize to the class and be excused for the day. I decided to wait the next few hours outside for my mom to pick me up. I cried to my mother and told her that I never wanted to go back to that school and I don't want that woman to have the pleaser of handing me my diploma. My mother called and Nicole refused to talk to my mother without Jan present. Nicole then demanded to ask my mother what my version of the story was and my mother said it didn't matter because I apologized for my wrongdoing and Nicole took a swing at me by pulling up my transcripts once she learned my name. I am still angry with her for that terrible experience. There was another instance where I was in class and a young lady came in with her father to sign out of school. Her plans were to get her GED and enroll in college the next semester instead of her two year plan with basehor virtual school. Nicole refused to sign her out because she doesn't approve of dropping out at all. The father raised his voice and said that he's tired of her and he complained about his past experiences with her as well. I know all this because it was s huge scene in the classroom. Nicole threatened to call the police if they continued to press the subject and did not leave. That's when I took my que and left. I didn't enroll in time in 2013 to complete my last year of school. I'm still bothered by Nicole. She may run a tight ship, but she's not good at encouraging or motivating struggling students. She's very stringent and cruel. I don't have anything nice to say about Jan either. They both are blunt and bold. Tammy Potts is the MVP. She always took care of me and helped me succeed. I got the privilege to say goodbye to her and leave what seemed to be the worst part of my life. Everyday that Nicole was there I was afraid to talk in the classroom or be in her presents alone. I'm not sure what will come of this review or who will see it, I feel Basehor is a wonderful school and the education is amazing quality. -Madeline
