Beyond that, I struggle to point to what I paid for. My expectation wasn't just to plead to a lesser charge--that's the basic job of a criminal defense attorney. I expected communication, advocacy, and the feeling that someone was actually fighting for me. Instead he is quite condescding when he even is at fault. Instead, communication was poor. At one point, Brandon referred my mom--who was simply a witness--to another attorney at the another firm. In my opinion, there was no reason my own attorney couldn't have handled that instead of sending me to a colleague and generating another legal bill. It felt completely unnecessary. He will tell you otherwise, but it had no bearing in my case. Things got worse when Brandon went on vacation without telling me. I couldn't get ahold of him, no one showed up when I expected representation in court, and I was left scrambling. I was so frustrated that I took it out on his secretary, and she didn't deserve that. My frustration was with the lack of communication, not with her. When I finally spoke to Brandon, his response was essentially that I had "messed up" and that I was free to find another attorney. That's easy to say after you've already collected thousands of dollars. There was never any discussion of refunding fees or taking responsibility for how the situation was handled. The part that really left a bad taste in my mouth came after everything was over. Suddenly, communication wasn't a problem anymore. I received an email asking me to leave him a positive review, complete with a convenient link. I wish half that effort had gone into communicating with me while I was actually a client. I can't speak for the rest of Roth Davies or its attorneys. This review is only about my experience with Brandon Roth. He obtained a plea agreement, and I'll acknowledge that. But for the amount I paid, the communication, unnecessary referral, and overall client experience fell far short of what I expected. I would not hire him again. I wouldn't even trust him as part of my kid's little league or basketball team, morals left a long ago. Nothing could be further from the truth, based on my experience. The legal defense my criminal case required was very complex, yet Laura's lengthy career experience on trials while working at the District Attorney's office meant she deftly handled every aspect without any issues in communication or timely filing of motions. Not only that, but she proved I was unlawfully arrested and my case was dismissed, when most other criminal defense attorneys would have just taken my money and advised me to accept a plea deal. Pre-trial dismissal based on lack of probable cause is so rare for Kansas misdemeanors, the State even argued it wasn't possible when she filed her motion for it. Laura proved it was possible when Judge Sample sided with her argument. We even made some Kansas case history doing so. That isn't even all Laura has done for me. It's rare for a defense attorney to also have the depth of knowledge to also handle Family Law, but she has done so by working on a case for the civil side at the same time as she was working my criminal case. On that separate case, she has been equally spectacular. I will always recommend Juris Law. His involvement made things worse for everyone and every other lawyer we have spoken with agreed he seems quite incompetent. We made an appointment to visit with Mr. Hammond and my dad signed a contract for a package service totaling $2500.00. We were to go back to his office in a couple of weeks to sign documents and have paperwork filed with the court. My father passed away before anything was done. I spoke with Mr. Hammond about a partial refund of the money my father had given him. Mr. Hammond declined to refund any of the money saying his hourly fee is $800.00 and he felt as though he earned the money. I'm not sure if Mr. Hammond had a legal obligation to refund the money,but his decision speaks poorly of his character, in my opinion.
