NJIT Highlanders vs. High Point University Panthers at the Qubein Center I saw that NJIT, a school where I studied engineering before earning my degree in Charlotte, was playing at High Point University on Friday, December 5th at 7 pm. I try to attend at least one Highlanders game each year--usually in Newark, NJ with my longtime friend, an NJIT Alumni, Mike Johnstone. Even after moving to the North Carolina Triangle, I am still committed to seeing at least one Highlanders "Hoops" game annually. This year, the timing lined up perfectly. I had volunteered earlier in the day at the Fall 2025 Senior Design Expo at UNC Charlotte as a Lee College of Engineering alumnus, so the game in High Point was on my drive home. That said, I would have made the trip from Raleigh regardless. High Point entered that night with every advantage--better form, home court, a stronger roster, and momentum; however, I knew I would enjoy cheering on NJIT. High Point competes in the Big South Conference and started the 2025-26 season strong. Going into Friday's game, they were 7-2 overall and were picked in the preseason poll to finish first in the Big South. The Panthers are a solid mid-major program, coming off one of the best seasons in school history and carrying that momentum forward. NJIT, meanwhile, plays in the America East Conference and entered the night at 3-6 overall. Their road performance has been difficult, and historically the Highlanders have faced challenges, with a long-term winning percentage under .400 since joining Division I in the mid-2000s. Still, I was proud to support them. The outcome was expected, and High Point defeated NJIT 89-72. Despite the loss, I was proud of how competitive NJIT was, and I genuinely enjoyed watching both teams--High Point is an entertaining, well-coached squad. About the Qubein Center The Qubein Center is an impressive venue for basketball and university events. It is modern, beautifully maintained, and staffed by exceptionally friendly people--from the ticket office to the ushers. Because I have knee issues that make stairs difficult, I appreciated that the staff proactively offered me a ticket in the back row so I would not need to navigate steps. Access to my seat was seamless: elevator up, escalator down after the game, and no stairs required to reach the accessible men's room or concessions. The section also had non-assigned accessible seating, and the usher kindly allowed me to use one. That made my viewing experience even more comfortable. Overall, the Qubein Center is one of the most thoughtfully designed college arenas I have visited. Parking & Shuttle Bus Experience I parked in a surface lot off North University Parkway (across from Parkway Commons), located directly across East Lexington Avenue from the Qubein Center. High Point University operates shuttle buses between the parking areas and the arena, which made transportation simple and efficient. Even though I hold a North Carolina DMV Disability Parking Placard, I parked in a regular space adjacent to the designated accessible parking. I do this intentionally so that individuals who require van-accessible spaces can use them. The shuttle service was prompt, courteous, and easy to navigate. About High Point University High Point University is a private institution founded in 1924. In recent years it has grown significantly in both size and academic scope. HPU enrolls approximately 5,000 undergraduate students and is known for programs in business, health sciences, pharmacy, communication, education, interior design, and the arts. The university is also recognized for its significant campus investment, student-experience focus, and national rankings for innovation. For the 2025-26 academic year, HPU's estimated undergraduate tuition and fees are in the range of $45,000-$48,000 annually, with total cost of attendance (including room and board) typically exceeding $60,000. About NJIT The New Jersey Institute of Technology is a public polytechnic university founded in 1881 in Newark. It is widely known for engineering, architecture, computer science, applied sciences, and technology-focused business programs. NJIT enrolls roughly 11,000 students, including one of the most diverse engineering student bodies in the country. As a public institution, NJIT's tuition profile is significantly different from HPU's. For 2025-26, in-state undergraduate tuition typically falls in the $17,000-$19,000 range, while out-of-state tuition is generally around $33,000-$35,000. Overall Impression I had a great time attending the game. I was impressed by High Point University, its fans, the professionalism of the staff, and the overall atmosphere the university created before, during, and after the game. The Qubein Center is a standout facility, and the experience was smooth from parking to seating to the game itself. Even though the Highlanders came up short, it was a memorable night, and I look forward to returning. read more

The site is beautiful, historic, and stellar. There are several benches on site to sit down, read, or reflect on the educational opportunities available through the college. I was able to attend a T-Tone concert on the day that I visited the campus. The male acapella group performed a high energy concert. I enjoyed viewing historic statues on site. The campus is huge! Attending my daughter's college basketball game at Nido & Mariana Qubein Arena & Conference Center was nothing short of incredible. It was my first time on High Point University's campus, and from the moment I arrived, I was blown away by the attention to detail, world-class facilities, and electric atmosphere. The state-of-the-art technology throughout the arena enhances the experience, from the crystal-clear video boards to the immersive sound and lighting that make every moment feel larger than life. Despite its grand and impressive size, the arena maintains an intimate feel, drawing fans into the action with unmatched energy and excitement. The entire venue reflects excellence and innovation, creating an atmosphere that is both inviting and exhilarating. Whether you're a sports fan, a student, or a visitor or player, this arena is truly a game-changer--a must-see destination that sets a new standard for college athletics! Radford also got the win and my daughter was player of the game so it made the trip down from VA that much better! :) read more

This was my very first visit to High Point University. As I drove in, I could tell this place was pretty special. Security is very high at the entrance, and once you are cleared and given a parking pass, the scenary is very elegant and beautiful. The Health Science building is relatively new and very impressive with the labs and beautiful lobby. I could not find any trash on the ground and the bathrooms are exquisitely clean. Out of all the college campuses I have visited across the country, this institution is definitely in the top 3. read more

The University is quite impressive especially at Christmas time. We went to the drive thru holiday lights event (which is free by the way) and the campus was decked out with lights, and it was gorgeous! The song "Deck the halls with boughs of holly" certainly applied here! If you want a nice holiday experience to get you in the mood check it out! Its open 12/22/22-1/1/23 from 5pm-8pm and its free to get in. Traffic was steady but no big wait to get in. We have had two daughters that went to HPU. Both have come out with great jobs in their fields. The teachers, buildings, and academics are outstanding. But what I feel sets HPU apart and drew us is the things they teach that other universities do not. They look at the student as a whole and teach how to really be successful in the corporate world. So they have two restaurants where you have to where business clothes to get in. They teach the etiquette. The president teaches two seminars that cover life skills- ethics, values, etc. Both of our daughters got involved in the Greek system and have really enjoyed their friends and philanthropy work. read more

My husband and I are so grateful for our oldest daughter's experience at HPU. She had amazing professors who prepared her both in and out of the classroom for her to be career-ready. All of the staff at HPU are carring, genuine and are there to assist our students. The dorms are beautiful, the security team always goes above and beyond, the learning resources are abundant, and the president, Dr Qubein, continually does the right things right! He has transformed this university into the extraordinary place it is today. He is approachable, transparent, and a tremendous role model for the students. Our daughter had two fantastic internships during her time at HPU and was offered two incredible job opportunities in the fall before she graduated in May. She is happily and successfully employed and walked into this new chapter feeling very well-prepared. We dropped off a timid, shy, freshman girl and post graduation, have a mature and confident young woman! read more

The following review is specifically on HPU's annual Christmas Lights Drive Through event. I was excited to bring my family through the High Point University campus to see some beautiful Christmas lights this year. I will start out with the thing I liked, and that is the fact the campus is stunning. Now as I drove through the event, I started to discover things were not as they seemed. The event actually is a clever marketing ploy to drag unsuspecting families into the secret monopoly of High Point University. HPU has a LOT of money. And this drive through was just a way for the HPU elites to try to disguise the true meaning of HPU. First things first, they boast over 200 nutcrackers around the campus, but I do have to ask, wheres the diversity? All the nutcrackers were the same and I did not see the representation I yearned for. Another thing I noticed as I looked closer was the staff. If you look closely, all the staff wore expressions of fear and dread as you drove by. I even witnessed some of the staff checking over their shoulder as if someone, or something, where to be standing there. The truth is, the reason the event was free of charge was because HPU wants to flaunt their money on the underserved people of High Point. I saw some of the staff members throw their heads back and laugh when they saw a car that did not have a listing price of at least $80,000. It seemed the true motives of this community was not to give families a fun holiday activity, but to remind them of the things they could never afford, or even dream of! As I drove away from the horrors of the High Point University Christmas event, I couldn't help but hear a civilian walking down the street. The person was in a black scarf and their words carried in the wind, "do not be fooled", they said, "behind these gates and marble steps, lies a dark secret". While I thought these words could have been referencing the hard substances that most of these wealthy students abuse, I could not be sure. All I am trying to say is, do not let High Point University fool you. Thanks for reading! read more

High Point University has been an outstanding experience for my son! The university is exceptionally well run and deeply committed to the success of its students. From its focus on life skills to providing a wealth of opportunities for learning and growth HPU seeks to shape its students into happy, confident, well-educated and rounded individuals who are ready to take on life. Additionally, the beautiful campus and caring faculty and staff make for a wonderful experience for students and families. We are forever grateful to HPU! read more

Both of my children are students at High Point University (sophomore and senior) and we could not be more pleased with the education they are receiving. I volunteer to speak with the parents of prospective students because I believe in the mission and vision of this school. My kids were accepted to multiple universities across the country and I am proud that they both chose HPU. The transformation in their confidence and success over the years has been jaw-dropping, especially given that they experienced a portion of their formative high school years during the pandemic. The best 4 years! I loved attending HPU (graduated 2013) and I love watching how much it has continued to grow since I graduated! I always enjoy coming back to campus and seeing the new buildings. Nido is such a great president who really loves the students and makes it a point to get to know students. Classes challenged me and activities on campus were always a blast! The dorms were and still are top tier! I am currently on Young Alumni Council in the event council and I am loving being able to get more alumni involved with the university. As a parent of a current student, HPU has exceeded expectations. Yes, the campus is amazing but there is substance behind that very pretty campus! It is NOT all talk. He is thriving and has really made the campus his second home. The honors college has a great dorm for all freshmen and sophomore students, events to help everyone bond and acclimate to campus, trips to explore places around NC and even a Maymester for all students at the end of their second year to study abroad as a cohort. He was accepted to many well-known. selective engineering programs but when he saw the Makerspace and labs at HPU and spoke with professors in the engineering department, my son knew he would be set up to succeed in the field after graduation. HPU invests in their students. He knows he is NOT just a number. I am confident my son is achieving his goals because HPU has put supports in place that encourage students and foster independence, resilience, and life skills. read more

I am writing this review for my son who attended High Point University from fall 2022-2023. Let me start off by saying my son has academic disabilities as well as moderate special needs. This school lured my son in by promising him an education in a safe and nurturing environment. Last year my son experienced bullying that significantly impacted his mental health and well being. The issue was not addressed by the school as HPU took no accountability for my son's safety. This and the wrong major made for an extremely unfortunate freshman year. My son was also in the Excellence program which caters to students with special needs. However, the coaches are less than desirable as Jakes first coach did not lead him to a Successful year. His 2nd coach for the Fall of 2023 did not have enough time to help Jake achieve his goal. Jake avoids parties, regularly attends classes, communicates with his professors and strives for success. Even though Jake had a horrible experience in his freshman year, he came back to school with dedication. Jake was also able to make incredible friends and was living with them in an on campus apartment. Jake received a letter in October of 2023 that if he did not make a certain GPA he would be dismissed from HPU. Despite Jakes many attempts to get his GPA up he just could not reach his goal in time. Before Jake left HPU for winter break he made sure to change is major. Jake was dismissed in December of 2023! The school wrote him the most disgusting email that basically stated he is no longer invited back to HPU on the grounds that he did not maintain a certain GPA. This school took our money! Promised my son the world! Knew that he has special academic needs and than tossed him out. Jake was left feeling rejected, shameful and unwanted. HPU punished a student because of a learning disability. If one is wondering what happened to the student that bullied my child, got caught smoking weed and brought alcohol into his dorm, let me tell you! He is representing HPU because he can maintain a certain GPA. Bottom line if you have a child of special needs this is definitely not the school for you! This school cares more about there elite country club campus than their students. Sometimes your best education is at the Holiday Inn and not at the Ritz Carlton!! Shame on you HPU for tossing an extraordinary student with disabilities, who everyone respected and loved out of your school!!! HPU should stand for Hateful, Pompous and Unethical! read more

As we prepare for graduation of our young adult, I am so thankful she choose High Point University. She has grown so much in multiple areas of her life while gaining an education to prepare her for the next phase. We went thru some difficult medical challenges as a family during her last two years as a student and the support she received from the Administration, Student Life and even the wonderful Cafe lady that makes her daily omelet. You just don't find this type of support anywhere. I will always remember those special moments standing on campus with our beautiful daughter. The best part about this school is that it aligns perfectly with our family values. God, Family & Country. They are not ashamed and let it be known. That has been powerful as a reminder to our daughter to always put God first and you will not fail. The beauty of the school is she will always have a home!! The Alumni programs are amazing and keep their students coming back. She will always have a HOME! read more

The faculty here is top notch, providing tons of office hours and time after class to make sure their students are actually learning and understanding the material. My favorite class so far has been free markets and capitalism taught by Dr. Crofton. The material is very interesting and the way the class it taught is easy to understand. Also I was able to read Atlas Shrugged in this class which was an extremely influential book for me. read more

Wow. That has to be the first word anyone says when they walk onto this campus. The attention to detail is almost Disney like down to the classical music piped in throughout the campus. The new buildings on campus are breath taking in design and function. The furniture in the buildings are more like show rooms than typical college. The students appeared to dress neatly and my daughter noticed a few Vera Bradley bags. The school is not big, and the (engnimatic) president said 5000 would be the max students for the school. This is definately not a typical college and looks to offer and excellent experience. We will be applying in the Fall. read more

This school is absolutely amazing. Everyone at the school sets a positive example and is willing to go out of their way to be helpful. This includes all staff, from administration, professors, cafeteria, security and all other positions. The education is top-notch. There are so many opportunities to excel, become involved and learn beyond just the class room. The school is growing like crazy and I believe it will be considered one of the top-tier schools in the not to distant future, because it is right now, the only thing missing is the spreading of its reputation. It amazes me that some people post things like "robots" and "cult-like" when the fact is that everyone at the school is HAPPY because they are thrilled to be able to attend a school like this. It is not an act, it is not a cult. It is just a natural response to such a fantastic environment. To wake up every day, walk to class through such a beautiful campus, learn in equally impressive classrooms, get to use state of the art equipment, be taught by professors invested in their students success and have a positive attitude, be treated as someone that matters when doing even the simplest of things like going to the cafeteria, learn the importance of attention to detail and feel that you aren't just a number like students are at the vast majority of colleges. The university president is a motivational speaker and his message of being extraordinary and positive can be seen throughout the school community. I see that as being extremely positive for my son. It is no accident that people on campus have a positive attitude and are happy. People who look to find good and positive things will find them and the odds are really good that having that mind set will make them happy and successful. On the other hand, if you want to find problems and be a negative person then you will find those also. Imagine how much you have to warp your thinking to complain that people are 'too happy' and 'I get too many free things'. If you want your child to receive a stellar education, learn to express their views coherently, learn to be professional and grow into a very impressive adult with a positive attitude and give them a great chance to be successful and happy as they prepare themselves for a career then look no further than this school. My son has told me multiple times that he can't believe he gets to attend this school. It truly is one of a kind. read more

I'm currently a student here, and High Point is a pretty great school. The buildings are great and the classrooms are comfortable, the professors are mostly great at what they do, but at every school there are some that makes you wonder how they even got the job. The food plan is alright, some locations are better than others, but that's just based off of opinions (farmers, diner, prime). Most of the dorms have great setups, I currently live in the North College Townhomes and I love it, but the more expensive places, obviously, have a pretty cool setup as well. The students here are a hit or miss, I've found lifelong friends and down to earth people in my classes and club sport team, but there's definitely rich kids who relied on mom and dad their whole life and expect everything to be handed to them. The social scene is decent, finding parties in Greek Village is easy, and security is pretty chill about most things, but at the same time they're always looking out for the wellness of the students even if you'd rather avoid them. Even though the stigma of what happened with Greek life a few years back follows the school like a dark cloud, I believe that the school has made stricter rules for the frats and sororities, and there really aren't any scandalous things taking place. read more
