An asterisk is used to reference omission. Barry Bonds hit all those home runs but omitted the fact that he did it under the influence of steroids. Life Church deserves such an asterisk. Their website's homepage states: "Life Church is a different type of church. Since its beginning, the church's approach has always been to offer a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere where people can come as they are, regardless of their background, and experience a relationship with Jesus Christ." Nothing could be further from the truth. Dig a bit deeper and the church website states its values as "All people matter under God, so they matter to us", "Anyone can come as they are", "God changes us to be like Jesus", "God created us for community", and "God calls every one of us to be a minister and missionary in every moment". Again, insert asterisk here. My family recently moved to Texas from Tennessee where I have been a lifelong member of a southern Baptist church. When we arrived in Liberty Hill, we wanted to find a church in which we could thrive as a family, where our kids could participate in youth group, where we could get involved in community outreach and missions and thrive as Christians. On the recommendation of neighbors, we attended our first Life Church service in late 2021 and were impressed with the welcome we received and the way they were organized around checking our children in and out of the kids' church. We enjoyed the service, and the kids loved their program, and for the first time ever, told us they'd like to go back to church. After months of attendance, involvement, meeting wonderful people, making donations, kids attending camp, and a particular sermon by the lead pastor about the importance of being a member of a church, Life Church, or another, we made it official and signed up for their membership class and took advantage of their opportunity to join and get more involved. Following an email from the individual in charge of the elementary program at the church welcoming me to the team as a volunteer and outlining the process of volunteering for the youth ministries, I received a subsequent email from the lead pastor stating we should "probably address the elephant in the room". We welcomed the lead pastor to our home for the conversation, which started with his asking about our journey in Christ. We both told our stories and gave details of our relationships with God, the church, and even our family. As the conversation continued, he kept saying this is such a difficult situation we're in. We still weren't clear what situation he was talking about. So, I finally just put it out there on the table. "Are you here today to talk about the fact we're a same sex couple? A couple that has been together for twenty years? A couple that loves the Lord, are born again Christians and want to worship and praise the Lord just like anyone else?" He said yes. How do you think Jesus felt looking down on that moment? I've never felt so judged, and by a minister, to make it even worse. The fact that he came into our home, drank our coffee, asked engaging questions, and then told us we are unworthy is just unacceptable. Life Church managed to do more damage to the faith of this family than it will ever realize or admit. Our kids have been rocked by this and they don't understand, since all they heard from the church for 8 months was that everyone is welcome, and God loves all. Now, kids that were so close in their relationship with Jesus are questioning everything. But we will continue to serve the Lord and won't let our relationship with God be deterred by the opinion of Life Church*.

The vision is clear and biblically aligned with the Great Commission. It is written everywhere, spoken about consistently, and lives in the hearts of the people. The pastor has built an incredible team of staff and volunteers who carry the mission forward in a way that is not dependent upon him. The name of Jesus is magnified and there is excellence in everything that is done no matter how big or small. The presence of the Holy Spirit is evident and powerful every service. If you are looking for a church home, do not skip over City Reach without carving out time for a visit.

Thankfully, a good friend of ours recommended City Reach; and after checking out the church over a couple of Sundays, we made our choice. We enjoyed and continue to be delighted by the friendliness of the church member community here. The parking team does a wonderful job each Sunday to make sure we find a parking spot, and they have a shuttle that brings us to the entrance. Drip coffee and hot tea are provided if you'd like to enjoy a hot beverage while worshipping and listening to the sermon. The worship teams are truly in the spirit and sing in the name of Jesus. The worship sets are powerful and we can feel the Holy Spirit moving within us, and we see how others around us have been impacted as well. The pastor is unapologetic in preaching what is written in the Bible. He doesn't add fluff but stays true to the Word. His expository style is appreciated as he highlights the main ideas while calling out key points. They also have a children's program, from infants through high school. Their new campus is beautiful and has several parking lots to choose from. There is also overflow parking available with a shuttle provided. City Reach Church isn't charismatic nor is it traditional (we've been to both kinds in the past), it's actually fun and we look forward to going each Sunday! The style here is unique, though it's not necessarily for everyone. If you're curious to learn what a relationship with Jesus looks like, are new in your walk with Jesus, or if you're looking for a new church home, we highly recommend giving City Reach a try!

We told the staff our budget and were given a reasonable offer we could afford. Our board members took time off on a week day to tour the space and requested a contract. In the mean time, we declined other options for meeting spaces elsewhere. Imagine our surprise when the director of operations emailed us to say he wouldn't approve our contract because of an alleged miscommunication in pricing. A miscommunication of, say, a couple hundred or even a thousand seems reasonable. No, this miscommunication meant instead of paying under 5K for the year, our group would have to pay 40K. Are y'all kidding me? ‍ For us to meet for 3 hours once a week? The way business is handled by the staff here does not make me interested in learning any more about this church's priorities. Clearly greed is their only priority.

Now, I wish I started sooner! My kids love seeing their friends every Sunday and attending Kid's Church with Mr. Seth. Visiting on the front deck before and after service has become our Sunday norm. For us, it's worth the 30 minute drive from Liberty Hill. Seeing Pastor Marty retire after his recovery from COVID was a shock but understandable. Pastor Steven really stepped up in 2020 and 2021 to fill in some big shoes and has been doing a great job to keep the vision alive and well. I can't avoid mentioning the Church's Christmas production, Follow the Star. It has become an annual tradition for our family. It's amazing to see a small congregation put on such a big event for the community. When I started volunteering, I really got to see the passion of the members at Good Shepherd. They pour in months of effort to make it happen. I highly recommend coming to worship in-person or online.
