He was pretty knowledgeable and answered a lot of our questions. The bf and I browsed for what seemed to be hours. Later on, his wife asked if I wanted some water to drink and gave me a bottle of water right there and then! Das why I love my Hilo town. :) So full of aloha these people. The store is pretty expansive and takes up two large sections with a smaller sub-room in the back. He specialized in a lot of European and Hawaiian antiques and also performs restoration on some of the furniture pieces that come to him "less than desirable." A lot of the store is furniture antiques - tables, desk, chairs, display cases, etc. - but settled amongst these are smaller objects. Koa boxes, small ceramic figurines, koa bowls, dishes, etc. Prices will range depending on what you're looking for --- furniture started in the high hundreds on up. Keep in mind, that this isn't the Sally Store (Salvation Army store) or Goodwill and you're paying for items that rare/can't be found a whole anymore. Thus, each piece is priced accordingly. If you're interested in antique furniture, koa items, or local vintage Hawaiiana, I'd definitely recommend this place. There's free parking right in front of the store.

A year later I needed to replace a bed that had not fared well in my move, and again found the best deal here, after looking at literally every place that sells beds in the vicinity of Hilo. This is a homegrown, mom-and-pop operation run by folks who are really sweet and helpful. Next time I need furniture, this will definitely be the first place I look. They also carry musical instruments, but I'm not qualified to comment on those.

On July 18th 2023 I went into the bamboo & teak furniture store in Hilo to pick up a table and…read morechairs for a friend that I had referred. The friend that purchased the furniture told them I would be down that morning to pick it up. When I got there, I made contact with a female employee that had been cruising around on an electric scooter. The female employee told me that the table was in a storage bay at the end of the building and the chairs were in a shipping container on the other end of the parking lot and that there was a $15 loading fee. I told her that my two daughters and I could load the furniture if she could bring it out. Her and another employee went down to the bay where the table was, and removed it from a stack of tables and set it just outside the bay door. She said here you go and again told me the chairs were in the shipping container at the other end of the parking lot, before walking away. We carried the table the entire length of the building back to my truck and then had to retrieve all six chairs from the shipping container. After loading all of the furniture, I found the female employee wandering around the store with what appeared like nothing to do except trying to look busy. We were the only customers there and the parking lot was empty. I asked her if the owner of the business was around. She told me that he wasn't working that day and rudely asked what I needed. I calmly explained that from a customer point of view, I shouldn't have to gather all of the furniture that was ordered. I told her that I felt that the furniture should've been in one area for me to load up. I also told her that I had never had a furniture company charge to help wrap and load furniture. She told me she was too busy to help me wrap and load, yet wasn't helping any other customers and to me was just wandering around trying to look busy. She told me that she didn't have time to baby every customer that comes into the store, and that we were lucky to even have a place to shop for furniture. She also told me they barely survived Covid. I told her that over the last year I had easily spent several thousand dollars and referred many people to their business and from a customer point of view this wasn't the proper way to treat customers. She told me that she didn't care and didn't need my money. I told her that if Covid hadn't taken them out of business, her attitude surely would. I also told her she shouldn't act like they are the only furniture store on the island because there are other places to shop. She told me good, shop somewhere else. I assured her that I would be shopping elsewhere and would be speaking to the owner. During my conversation with her I never raised my voice or got rude yet she was very rude and repeatedly interrupted me while I was speaking. I made several attempts to contact Mike the owner and never received a call back. I don't know what happened to this business. It used to be awesome you would buy furniture, they would have it wrapped and ready for you they would help you load it and often I would give them 10 or $20 as a tip. I try and support local businesses anytime that I can, but when treated like this by an employee, I will not go back and will not recommend them to anyone.

After a disaster with the movers who brought my stuff from California to Hilo (see my review of…read moreRoyal Hawaiian Movers for details), I had a bed and a futon that were, respectively, barely usable and unusable because the movers had lost critical pieces and couldn't put them back together properly. One attempted repair by a handyman the movers connected me with turned into a fiasco. In desperation, I turned to Iolani -- there not being a lot of furniture repair people in Hilo. Shanna saved the day. She repaired both items quickly, at shockingly reasonable prices. And she gave me a bit of useful info that, as a newcomer to the island, it would have taken me a while to figure out on my own. If Yelp let you give a business more than five stars, I would.

But overall the astronomy center was lacking something. The exhibits were mixed, and though I appreciate having other things like local birds and trees, our kids get that through school and we really wanted to see astronomy stuff. The farm animal color wall was stupid, it's off subject and doesn't really teach kids anything. We liked the canoe/sailing exhibit, it tied in historical Hawaiian history and astronomy. We will return eventually, but if the exhibits were stronger or the price more reasonable, we'd be more likely to stop by sooner. I feel like the old Ellison Onizuka museum at the Kona airport had better space/astronomy exhibits.

Five and a half years I've waited to write my review for the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. That's…read morefive and a half years worth of studying, writing papers, and working on nightmarish group projects. I guess it was worth it. I do have a fancy little paper to show for it now. Hopefully I'll be able to add a fancy job in the near future as well! In any case, I've spent a lot of time at UHH over the past few years. Though it wasn't always easy, I can most assuredly say that I've come out a much higher quality individual. Going into it, I had an admittedly strong aversion to studying and work. Thankfully UHH is a relatively forgiving system as far as general education courses go, which were basically all that I took for my first year and a half. What really allowed me to mature and get it together was when I switched majors from biology to computer science. Entering into the computer science program was somewhat of a rude awakening for me. First off, there was a lot more math than I'd ever envisioned putting myself through previously. Secondly, the CS department was not quite as forgiving as the others I'd taken classes from. Being that I was in too deep to change majors again, I was forced to buckle down and work hard in the computer science program. The classes were rigorous and the material was by no means a cakewalk. The phrase "trial by fire" does a pretty good job of summing up a good bit of its courses. I can't really speak on the experience in other majors, but getting through the CS department was very transformative for me. I can honestly say that I feel sufficiently equipped to enter into the work force now as a software engineer. Here are a few other noteworthy things about UHH (good things first): There are very small class sizes for the most part, especially in upper division courses. It makes for better relationships with both fellow students and your professors, among other things. The professors and staff are generally pretty helpful. This ties in a bit to the class size thing. Being that you'll tend to have a better relationship with your professors, they of course are more likely to do you a solid when you need it (within reason). Parking is relatively cheap in comparison to other universities. Of course, if you're from Hilo you'll probably think that having to pay for parking in the first place is kind of outrageous. It's not too bad nonetheless. There is a tiered parking system in which you pay $60 a year for red zone (closer to campus) passes and $25 a year for general zone (a bit farther but still close) passes. The prices are reduced a bit for single-semester purchases. There are a cafeteria and fitness center on campus. I didn't ever use either of them, but I've heard the food is good and facilities are nice! The tuition here is probably one of the best in the entire country as far as bang for your buck. My main gripe with the school is that it's basically impossible to graduate on time if you don't follow your major's four-year plan from the very beginning of your college career. There are a plethora of things that contribute to this, but most stem from the fact that it's a small school. To that point, though, you should know that when you're going in. Overall, I feel like I got a good education and am equipped to handle whatever situation I may encounter in the work-force.
