We was there approximately 1 1/2 hours before the night turned, my friend went outside after ordering a drink at the bar, she suddenly passed out, was unresponsive and was being sick, she hadn't drank anymore that what she normally would and was completely out of character, we suspect she was spiked. After around 20 minutes of her being unresponsive i called one of the bouncers over to see if they had quick response of an ambulance while my friend was on the phone to 999, I was told that someone would be over when every single one of the door men had dealt with a 1-1 altercation so we didn't feel like she was much of a priority at all, considering how ill she was. After around 30 minutes after asking the bouncer the 'manager' came over and told 2 of his colleagues to take my friend inside without giving us an option. Firstly, one of the doormen tried to pick an unresponsive person up by her arm forcefully to get her to stand, then when I told him he could not pick her up like that he suddenly changed his stance and picked her up correctly with the 'head door man', then turned verbally abusive because he knew he had done wrong. After this, she was taken into a 'safe room' which I can describe as a hallway. Their was glass all over the floor when she was placed on the floor, on a mat, on her back which I'm sure most are aware, is not correct. She should have been put into the recovery position straight away considering she was vomiting. Only one person was aloud in this hallway with her while the staff did absolutely nothing for her, apart from let he lie there, an ambulance on the clubs part wasn't even called. I was pushed from the doors that led to this dirty cold hallway and they was shut in my face, following this the head door man, pushed me and my friend repeatedly until we was out of the club which then would not let us back in at all without using force when their was no need, we did not show any signs of aggression at all towards anyone so the fact they felt the need to be aggressive says a lot about them as people. The police also told me that the club is filled with CCTV so I will be advising the police to have to footage from last night, to see everything that happened, including alterations with people outside of my group of friends that your staff thought it was ok to punch causing to bleed. Secondly, every single one of the bouncers working that night apart from one lady. Was very rude, aggressive and verbally/physically abusive. I have video evidence to prove this. The police were called so we felt safe while our friend was in the safe room that they have as she felt unsafe being unsupervised. Unfortunately, no names were given to us last night, they refused although we do have pictures of some of the doormen that were violent.

Thats why once every few months, after a couple (many) beverages my friends and I like to take trip to a little place called the Funky Fish. Its nearly always a laugh, it has the feel of gate crashing someones wedding with the constant supply of Jackson 5 and Diana Ross. If you not up for dancing this place isn't for you as everyones up on the floor all night, with every tune more classic than the last. The venue is right on the sea front and you enter through a old door to a Victorian town house. The interior is a little dingy and unimaginative but the friendly atmosphere and absolute carnage that ensues makes up for that. An excellent place for a birthdays, stag and hens dos or generally if you want to let loose and get funky.

Regular appearances from big name acts, such as Florence and The Machine, Kaiser Chiefs, The White Stripes, Bloc Party and De La Soul, mean that it's a must-play for any semi-successful touring act. The ample £250 000 sound system and professional staging gives every show a sense of occasion, lifting the venue above the amateur but not so high as to be inaccessible. Adorned with enough character and history it's possibly the only independent venue in Brighton that consistently delivers first-class entertainment in an elegant setting at an affordable price.

Explore futher though, and you find smaller rooms, the size of a small living room with a few sofas and tables. It does really feel in these parts of the pub as if you are in someone's house. Upstairs, there is a large function room, which also provides extra seating on busy nights. It's often used for band nights and big screen football. The place is stuffed full of interesting nooks and crannies and things to look at, without being too self-consciously cool. The toilet graffiti is also a constant source of amusement.

The layout of the pub is great. There aren't many big pubs which still manage to feel cosy, but the individual rooms/areas of The Prince Albert mean that even at its emptiest times (which isn't often) the place still feels homely and warm. Each room is decorated uniquely and there's cool music posters, most signed by famous bands and DJs, hanging throughout the pub. They make for good snooping material whilst you're mulling over a pint. Upstairs there's a decent sized live music venue where bands from Brighton and beyond grace the stage. The sound system is good, but the room does get a little hot in the summer months. The staff are part of the furniture in this place, and they're all super friendly, whilst still managing to look uber cool. The prices are very reasonable considering the pubs location and clientèle, and they serve a good range of ciders, beers, wines and spirits. The foods not bad either, and they serve meals much later than any other Brighton establishments. The only downside to the place is the lack of a garden. There is a small patio at the back of the pub, but it's usually very busy, and the seating outside the front of the pub (which there is a lot of) is right on the roadside. But all in all this is a great place and worth visiting just to see the Banksy if nothing else.

It is fairly small, but generally feels about the right size for the nights that are held here. The bar is separate from the main dancefloor, which is a definite bonus, meaning that no-one is walking through the thronging masses to get to the bar. The main room is upstairs, but downstairs is another smaller room, generally with a more chilled out atmosphere than the main section. In summer, in common with most seafront clubs, it is a cafe/bar in the daytime, serving takeaway drinks and basic food. It's not plush or fancy, and could even be described as grimy, but it's also a hell of a lot of fun.

I had a funny instance there myself when I turned up kitted out in an Audrey-esque 1950s ball room frock, with red lips and pearls to match. No I'm not a complete idiot, turning up to the dingy venue well known for its rock crowd - I was going to the monthly rockabilly night Born Bad. But beware! The music is more psychobilly and expect luminous hair dyes, tatoos, fish nets and piercings galore. Although I'm not a huge fan of the Engine Room myself, with its dedicated rock ethos offering up rock, punk, alternative and metal nights through the week, it certainly is a great alternative to much of what's on offer in central Brighton. It's probably the only such place Brighton has too, as Pav Tav's rock music includes the more popular indie stuff and the rock n roll oldies too.

The Engine Room is the main full time rock/metal club in the city and hosts a number of regular…read morenights, as well as events like the punk rock karaoke and live band nights. I would say that I have mixed feelings about the place. It carries off the whole slightly sleazy and dirty rock mood well, but they really could do with a refurbishment to sort the place out a bit. For some reason, when the club is busy and the dance floor is in full swing the walls tend to drip sweat. Now this is something that really doesn't appeal to me and I would advise any patrons to beware the walls! The dance floor is based in the centre of the club and there is a raised seating area to one side and a number of booths reminiscent of the cantina in Star Wars opposite. These can be good to get established in if you are out with a group and shielded enough from the speakers to allow a decent conversation to develop. The quality of the sound system isn't the best and whilst this isn't so noticeable on DJ nights, it can impact on the live events at the place. On this note, the stage area is small and you can see that any bands are a bit hampered from properly rocking out because of it. Prices are fair and drinks are not too expensive for a club. The staff are also quite relaxed and it's the kind of place you are unlikely to see too much grief or trouble. All in all, it is a fun night out but it really would benefit from a little TLC and a make over to stand out from the crowd.

Unfortunately, both times I ate there I was appalled by the service and the standard of food. The first time I ordered a superfood salad that was limp and lacking most of the good ingredients and the second time I ordered a burger and fries. The latter was delivered cold and wasn't that tasty either - a double whammy of disappointment. I would have sent them back but the staff were so rushed off their feet both time, it was impossible to get their attention. When I did complain they simply looked at me stoney-facey and shrugged 'Sorry about that' or something to that effect. Suffice to say, I won't be going back to eat there unless they employ a new team of chefs and some well mannered staff! I would however, go back to The Coalition in the evening to try one of their gigs or club nights like Club NME. The drinks are reasonable and they have an intreguing roster of guest deejays and bands from Boy George to Bloc Party.

Ah, Brighton, the trendier beach-based city. With a thriving gay community and a row of artists' studios on the waterfront you literally couldn't get more boho. Music venues of course are a must in a town like this, and the Coalition is a great example. While the BF insisted that the acoustics weren't spot on, we mere mortals and Average Joes enjoyed what we heard and saw. The atmospheric lighting and original features lent themselves well to an intimate space where the band is literally only a few feet away, the bar's always within reach and there are squishy sofas aplenty to appease your behind. I do have a scruple though, and it's a big one. After the bands played, we were kicked out. And I do mean harshly for a sweet, sensitive and soulful place like Brighton. Heck, this would have been harsh even in Manchester. No messing around with these bouncers. And why were they kicking us out, pray tell? Oh, they weren't closing. No, far from it. After the live music they re-open as a club and boot you out so you have to pay AGAIN to get in. Coalition, you were so close. I'd definitely see a band there again, but I'd make sure my Bulmers was supped and my coat was well and truly got by the time the closing few bars were played. Shame.
