Overall my family and I enjoy this restaurant a lot and have frequented it for over ten+ years. It has a much more relaxed environment and very friendly staff.

Definitely thought it was a place where they cook in front of you but we walked in and I was completely wrong. Oops. The place is pretty small but it can still accommodate a decent number in one group. We were instantly greeted. There was only ONE waitress for the entire restaurant and there were a lot of customers (For Albany's standards that is) so I felt really bad for her. About an hour later, that's when another waiter and waitress showed up. We were sat fairly quickly (you get to pick your own table). We only resorted to one table because the other ones were t cleaned off yet. But the moment we sat down, the table was insanely sticky. That's when we decided to just take our food to go. The salad looked really limp and the soup was straight up chicken broth mixed with beef broth with one mushroom The food itself was a little bit more promising. The noodles were not good and the chicken didn't taste like chicken... but the fried rice and shrimp was decent. I got one broccoli in my veggies and the rest onions, yay. The ONLY thing that was good was the sushi (we got the shogun roll and the volcano roll). That's the ONLY reason I'd come back here. Our waitress and the sushi are the only ones that deserve the stars. Other than that, I highly recommend going to Tokyo Restaurant instead.

We were paying for our grandson. My daughter was paying for our grand daughter (only a drink) & her & her husband)another family of 3 arrived just a min before we gout our soup & salad. No problem.. they order & just got their soup & salad. (They were out of steak (filet only) & scallops.) well while they were eating & just finishing up, they fill up the table across from us. We are STILL waiting on food (about 25-30 minutes) . Then they ask the other table if they wouldn't mind if they cooked their food on our grill at the same time..... didn't ask us.. our 3 yr old grand daughter is potty training..we were not asked. But they just told us & said it would only be about 5-10 minutes more... NOPE!!! 20 minutes later, (almost an hour AFTER we ordered)we finally get food.. because of food allergies NOW our Son-in had to now get his food cooked in the back.. BECAUSE OF SO MUCH FOOD, there was MANY problems. 1)I have a SEVERE food allergy, he didn't put ANY sauces on my food except soy sauce. So I asked for eel sauce.. they charged me .75 for each side of the sauce dish (1.50) 2) Sauces: They didn't give any one sauces EXCEPT.. Yum Yum & ginger.. no teriyaki.. 3) Rice: He only put 5 eggs (which were brown as soon as he started mixing them up.) for 16 people in the rice that was very crunchy & didn't have enough soy sauce or butter. (On carrots, onions combo) As he gave a scoop of rice to every person. Rice was dropping on the floor. (The same for ANYTHING he had to give to the other table) 4) The vegetables: I have problems chewing so I asked for him to cook my vegetables a little more. When I got them everything was charred & crispy because he didn't add enough liquid to keep it moist. 5.) Sushi: my daughter ordered 2 rolls. She got one because they were out of the Neuro roll. (How??-) 6) MEAT: A)they didn't take tails off of shrimp. B) chicken & steaks were cut in LARGE pieces. C)My grandson 11, had to try to cut up his steak, which was supposed to be MR & was extremely rare. Mine was supposed to be M, but came out MR. The other 3 on our table, the dad asked for MW,, came out like mine, BUT his son who was supposed to be Well Done.. was REALLY over done. He couldn't eat it!! 4) Refills: you got free refills for sodas & water BUT- HOT tea.. NO. They only gave me 1/2 kettle (2 cups worth). They didn't tell me so when I asked for more... yep, they charged me for it... 5) HE DID NOT scrape the grill OR clean off the fork or spatula between the vegetables, rice, eggs, or meats.. so all teriyaki sauces & left over pieces from previous cooking (done on the same area) was still one the grill. So if I was was allergic to the sauces - which he didn't know if had tomato products in it was cooked on & given to me was on it, it would have killed me.. so I didn't eat it!! 6) We were NOT given any apologies or discount for waiting so long.. 7) Tipping: They charged us ALL 18%.for a tip!! We waited 1 hour for our food!! Our daughter was finished eating her sushi before we got our food, My daughter only ate sushi, grand daughter only a drink, & our son-in-l had to have his food cooked in the back because of the other table being cooked in the back!! & the food was AWFUL & service was so-so!! It was NOT WORTH 18%. I could give 0 stars I could!! Do NOT go here for the grill!!

Mikata Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar - This was in my mouth as I ate my food. The owner did NOT care and was so upset that I even brought it to her attention.

I think she wanted something to take my mind off the impending storm. This did the trick. For me, being able to watch the chef make my meal was just as good, if not better, than the meal. This was my first hibachi experience and I would have to say it was a good one. My friend and I started with an order of sushi. We got the deep fried crab delight roll. It was very good. My husband and my neighbor both got the Sukiyaki steak dinner. It came with soup, salad, and fried rice. I got a side of scallops and had a few bites of my husband's rice. The rice was good, but the scallops were a little over cooked, at least in my opinion. My husband really enjoyed his meal, as did my friend. Our chef was fun to watch and he was, well, fun! While I have no plans to be in the area again (at least not for the reason I was there this time) I would eat here again.

Save yourself the sweat and frustration: 1. Leave Mikata's parking lot. 2. Turn left on Dawson Road. 3. Drive 2 minutes to Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse. 4. Actually enjoy good food and service. Skip Mikata -- Tokyo is the better choice every time.
